RUSTENBURG local municipality will address high level of noise. The municipality spokesperson, Thapelo Matebesi said they have received numerous noise pollution complaints from some of residents.

“We have received complaints from some of residents about the high levels of noise, particularly over weekends. The Municipality’s Public Safety Directorate in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Bojanala Platinum District Municipality will address that matter.

“We will deal with that nuisance. We embarked on specific site visits last week to measure noise levels. The outcome of the site visits are that the noise levels were found to be below 85 decibels ironically. We used the scientific terminology to describe that,” Matebesi said.

He said a specific scientific instrument was used by Environmental Health Practitioners to measure the noise levels in specific identified places. Matebesi said places identified were taverns and night clubs in particular.

“The noise levels were found to be satisfactory below 85 decibels in terms of the prescribed Municipal By-Law. This is an ongoing project by the municipality and its partners to deal with this nuisance. Our next target will be the Olympia Park stadium during any event hosted there.

“We also appeal to our entertainment businesspersons to adhere to the Municipal By-Law by lowering their music levels. We are henceforth going to affix a specific clause on permits when we issue them reminding music concerts hosts and other functions to lower their noise levels. Failure to comply with the prescript of this specific By-Law will result in heavy spot penalties or fines not less than R500,” he said.
