Minister of Education visits N West schools

Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga will visit Kenneth Kaunda Education district in North West on Wednesday. 

Motshekga will start her visit at Matlosana Secondary School in Matlosana township in Klerksdorp to congratulate the school for winning in five categories at the 2016 ABC Motsepe Schools Eisteddfod. 

She will also visit Nkang-Mahlale Secondary and Ithuseng Primary also in the Jouberton Township in Matlosana where she will engage and interact with learners, educators and School Management Teams (SMTs) including meeting with School Governing Bodies (SGBs). The minister will later depart for BA Seobi Secondary in Ikageng township in Tlokwe Municipality where she will meet with the school communities.  

Motshekga will be accompanied by the Head of North West Department of Education Dr Itumeleng Molale and Kenneth Kaunda Education District Director, Hasimbhay Motara.

FIREWORKS are expected in a match between Platinum Stars and Orlando Pirates at Moruleng Stadium on Saturday. The two teams will participate in a Maize Cup. North West provincial government spokesperson, Brian Setswambung said the two teams are expected to dish out enterprising football.

“Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates FC will play against defending champions and host, Platinum Stars FC. We are expecting a cracker and dancers like Chomee together with Metro FM award, Best R&B single recipient, Cici will entertain the crowd. Local entertainers will also be on the programme to add some traditional ‘spice’ to the event.

“We will also be celebrating Women’s Day. This year mark 60th anniversary after more than 20 000 South African women of all races marched on to the Union Buildings in protest against “pass laws back in 1956,” Setswambung said.

North West province, Supra Mahumapelo has invited all women to attend the event. Mahumapelo said that women will be given a free pass on the day.

“We appreciate the role played by women in our society. This is the small way to show appreciation and gratitude. We hope this will make them feel special. We are delighted to have two top teams competing in the Bokone Bophirima Maize Cup this year. We are also looking forward to an outstanding day of entertainment for local and travelling fans. As part of CSI, the education and sport development department and two teams will host a development clinic for 200 kids the day before the match,” he said.

The match will provide football-starved fans with top quality pre-season action. It will also give them an opportunity to see some of the new recruits ahead of the 2016/2017 campaign. Both teams will be looking for good performances as they continue to prepare for the new season.

A youth development match will be played as curtain raiser. The Bojanala Women will square-up against Ngaka Modiri Molema Women (U19 Girls). Under-15 boys’ teams, Dr Kenneth Kaunda vs Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati will also lock horns.

The province will be giving away free beanies and pop-corn to the first 2000 fans coming into the stadium. The Kick Off will be at 3pm.

Tickets are available through Computicket & Shoprite Checkers at R40 for adults and R10 for children under 12 years.

Nigerian man found with drugs

A 28-YEAR-OLD Nigerian man was arrested for being in possession of drugs in Brits on Monday. North West police said the suspect was arrest at Damdoryn near Hartbeespoortdam.

“Police responded swiftly after receiving a tip-off about a man who was allegedly seen selling drugs. Upon arrival at the scene, they found the man in possession of seven small packets of Crystal meth with estimated street value of R5000,” Police spokesperson, Sgt Kelebogile Moleko said.

The suspect will appear in Brits Magistrate Court’s on Wednesday.

A woman chopped to death with axe

A 25-YEAR-OLD man from Zimbabwe is expected to appear in Zeerust Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. North West police spokesperson, Sgt Kelebogile Molale said the suspect was arrested in connection of a murder.

“The suspect was arrest on Monday in Zeerust. The police were summoned to a murder complaint and allegedly found a woman, 41 lying on the ground with multiple wounds on her body. The victim and the suspect were engaged in an argument when the suspect allegedly took out an axe and chopped her. The Emergency Medical Response Services (EMRS) personnel were called to the scene and certified her dead,” Molale said.

Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant Gen Baile Motswenyane condemned the incident.

“It was upsetting to note that women are mercilessly killed. They are killed on a women’s month by their partners who were suppose to protect them. Police will do everything possible to ensure that the suspects get severe punishment,” Motswenyane said.
