Plans afoot to counter labour department backlog

lABOUR DEPARTMENT

INCORRECT information provided by employers caused backlog for more than 1000 Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) at North West labour department.

UIF manager at provincial office, Selete Qhamakoane said they have now established a team of specialists to unpack the backlog.

“We are struggling to process the applications due to incorrect information supplied by employers. We want to resolve this matter and pay beneficiaries. Some of the applications are dating as far as last year. And most of them involve maternity applications.

“It means that mothers went on maternity leave and they never got paid by UIF. We urge employers to provide correct information as this hinders the process,” Qhamakoane said.

Provincial spokesperson, Orpa Mathabe said if the information provided differs with the one on their database, the application will automatically be rejected.

“This causes challenges because we need to send the applicants back to the employer to rectify the information. Also this leads to the backlog and beneficiaries end up not getting paid.

“We will send out our team of employer auditors to go and assist employers who struggle to fill the forms. We are also embarking on advocacy sessions in various Malls around North West from June to September,” Mathabe said.

She further said this was an attempt to reach out to employers. Mathabe added that employers also need to note that this is an interim intervention.

“They need to contact any labour department office nearer to them if they experience any challenges. Employers can also contact our office on (018) 387 8100 to get more details,” she said.

MEC Dr Mpho Motlhabane

“We know that North West province is mostly pre-dominated by rural areas. So our people rely on livestock to survive and improve their lives. We met with them to come up with strategic plans in eliminating livestock theft.

“We encouraged them to mark or tattooed their livestock. They must also have a forum that addresses their issues. The forum will work closely with our stock theft unit in policing department,” he said.

However a livestock owner from Dryharts village, Tsiamiso Goitsemodimo, 44 said he lost many goats through theft. Goitsemodimo said police were not helpful after he opened a case.

“I think police are not competent enough in fighting stock theft. I opened a case after my slaughtered goats were found in the suspects’ vehicle on N18 back in 2014.

“I positively identified those slaughtered goats after they were stolen in Choseng village. The case was opened against the suspects. However I do not know what happened to that case now,” he said.

IEC disappointed after a low turnout in Tlokwe

web_photo_tlokwe_30_pm_0.jpg

PROVINCIAL chairperson for IEC, Dr Tumelontle Thiba said they have received a low turnout at Tlokwe. Thiba said they encouraged people to come out and rectify their addresses as Concourt ordered.

“We have received only 2.2% turn out. We have 25 000 voters who were supposed to come and rectify their addresses. Our field workers were provided with necessary training.

“They also visited voters to engage with them. However our offices were opened on Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 5pm. The objective was to assist those registered voters to verify their addresses,” Thiba said.

She also said they are ready for local government comes August 3.

North West premier, Supra Mahumapelo said that government entities like Sassa, local government and human settlements and social development departments will assist the provincial electoral commission (IEC) to get necessary addresses before the August 3 elections.

The IEC was ordered to correct its voters roll for Tlokwe following a court challenge that threatened to mar the local government elections.

“We want fair, honest and free elections. So we will assist IEC to get required addresses for our voters. The constitutional court ordered that the local government elections should go ahead as scheduled.

“However, the same court ordered the IEC to rectify address issues in Tlokwe. We want to make sure that the elections run smoothly with no hindrances. We have entrusted IEC and we believe is the independent body. We will make sure the integrity of the authority is protected and restored. It is one of the most important institutions in our country,” Mahumapelo said.

Independent mayoral candidate in Tlokwe, David Kham said: “We blame IEC for the low turnout. The IEC is so incompetent. They trained 300 field workers to assist in rectifying addresses. So we expect them to visit the people if they do not come to the voting stations. The demarcation issue between Ventersdorp and Tlokwe also played a role. Many people are registered at wrong voting district stations.” Kham said.
