BREAKING: Downs back in CAF

image

Mamelodi Sundowns have been promoted back into the Champions League after AS Vita Club were disqualifed, CAF have announced.

The Confederation of African Football announced in a tweet from their offcial Twitter account that the PSL side will take the Congolese team’s place in the top-tier competition.

Vita eliminated Sundowns from the Champions League on away-goals after a 2-2 aggregate draw before The Brazilians dropped down into the CAF Confederation Cup, where they were eliminated in the same manner after a 3-3 aggregate draw against Ghanaian side Medeama SC.

This means Sundowns will be in Champions League group stage action as early as 17 June and will have to cut short their off-season break.

They will be in today’s draws for the group stages of both continental competitions, which take place at the CAF headquarters in Cairo at 14h30.

Pitso Mosimane’s side will be in the mix alongside Al Ahly, Zamalek (both Egypt), ASEC Mimosas (Ivory Coast), ES Setif (Algeria), Enyimba (Nigeria), Wydad Athletic Club (Morocco) and Zesco (Zambia).

The woman who accused suspended African National Congress leader Marius Fransman of sexual harassment has decided to reveal her identity – as authorities confirmed he will not be charged.

Louisa Wynand‚ 21‚ from Stellenbosch‚ said on Monday that she had been informed by police in the North West that due to a lack of evidence‚ a charge of sexual harassment would not be pursued against Fransman.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesman in the North West‚ Frank Lesenyego‚ told TMG Digital on Monday: “The Director of Public Prosecutions: North West Province declines to prosecute the case due to insufficient evidence.”

“I am shocked and disappointed at the outcome of the investigation‚” said Wynand.

“My life has changed so much because of this incident and has affected not only me but my family and close friends. I‚ together with my legal team am confident that I gave the police enough evidence relating to the charges I brought against Marius Fransman‚”she said.

“I am confused as to why they say there is not enough evidence. But I will not take this laying down. I have met with my legal team to discuss my options‚” said Wynand.

“I have also decided to go public with my identity so that young women and children who find themselves in the same boat like I did‚ can see that it can happen to anyone. Our rights need to be protected. I am blessed to have incredible men around me but there are monsters out there who is breaking down our women and children. I believe that this is my journey and if this is the Universe using me to reach out to other victims of sexual assault‚ then so it shall be.”

“My music is a metaphor of my musical journey.  I went to Rustenburg and met with Thapelo Molefe. He saw potential in me and we worked together. We started to perform for free at local taverns in quest of finding a niche within the industry.

“We started to market ourselves. Molefe introduced me to Donald Shompane who also helped me to record my first album called Songo Le Bayana. We were singing kwaito at the time and performed in around Gauteng and North West,” Mochacho said.

He relocated to reside in Krugersdorp. I met with Dj Skhumba and immediately joined his kwaito group called Dinganga.

OBK Mochacho said he wrote more than 100 songs through his music career. He decided to go solo and released three albums so far under his name.

“I managed to sell more than 18 000 units overall. I also performed through fan parks across West Rand region during World Cup in 2010. My unique style of music convinced a lot of South Africans. I also shared the stage with the likes of Mandoza, Elvovo, Pitch Black Afro, Malaika and many more.

“My main focus is to rupture all barriers. I am a song writer and also a performer. I also want to perform at the bigger stage to expose my talent to the world. My style of music is one of its kinds,” he said.

OBK Mochacho further added that his skill is unique. He said his skill is rare and has never been done by any artist in SA.

“Winning Bokone Bophirima Hit Song Talent Competition brings happiness to me. I think what was lacking from my side was marketing my product. The recording deal contract will give me more exposure. I also believe that this created a good platform for up and coming artists from Taung,” he said.

OBK Mochacho won a professional recording deal worthy R300 000.

‘Bafana friendly game called off’

image

BY REGINALD KANYANE
JOHANNESBURG- The proposed Bafana Bafana international friendly match which was scheduled to be played after the Orange CAF Africa Cup of Nations Gabon 2017 qualifier against Gambia has been cancelled.

The friendly match was scheduled for June 7 outside South Africa.

“After careful evaluation of the final logistical arrangements following the team’s arrival from Gambia, it has been decided to cancel the planned away friendly International and give the players a well deserved rest after a long season,” said SAFA CEO Dennis Mumble.

“Given the various flight schedules, the team is only able to arrive back in the country on Monday evening on June 6. We  would therefore have had to travel the following day (7 June) for the proposed friendly scheduled for the same day.

“That would have been taxing and unfair for the players and the entire team,” added Mumble.

Bafana Bafana face Gambia on Saturday, 4 June 2016 at the Independence Stadium in Bakau, Gambia.

Their next assignment is the final AFCON 2017 qualifier against Mauritania scheduled for Saturday, 4 September 2016 in South Africa.

Violence in SA education a crisis – academics

Academic

Johannesburg – Two of South Africa’s most outspoken and prolific academics have called for better leadership and more participation from communities in improving education.

Vice chancellor of the University of the Free State, Professor Jonathan Jansen and Wits University vice chancellor, Professor Adam Habib, appeared at the Kingsmead Book Fair in Rosebank where they discussed violence in education.

The pair highlighted some of the causes of violence in the education sector and saying South Africa was in a crisis.

Jansen began the discussion by reminding the audience that South Africa emerged from a violent history. He said apartheid violence affected many people who now have a “genuine anger”.

“There is a group of young people who believe that destroying universities is a twisted form of revolution. There is no evidence of it going away anytime soon.”

Habib agreed with Jansen, saying violence at universities was a microcosm of the larger problem in society.

“There is violence everywhere. This violence has increased because of a dramatic polarisation in society. People’s perception of inequality has grown. Inequality is a dangerous thing because it alienates people.”

Habib added that violence had become more prevalent because there weren’t enough consequences.

“When violence erupts at Wits University, it takes me four to five hours to get police active. When they arrive, they look at me and say they are not sure what to do. I have even had to phone the premier and threaten them to humiliate publicly.”

Habib added that police were yet to take action against students whose names were handed over by the university.

Crisis in leadership

According to Habib, violence in Vuwani, where a number of schools were burnt down in succession, pointed to a lack of proper leadership.

“If we look at the celebrations in Fort Hare yesterday, there was a massive contingent of police. Why did this not happen in Vuwani? Why did it take so long to act? This divide is what is contributing to a serious problem in our country.”

Jansen agreed, adding that young people largely learnt from what they observed from political leadership.

“If a young person observes these kind of public values in political behaviour, this is the example they take away.”

Jansen said that ultimately, a shift in mindset, not policing, was required.

“Yes, the police can come in and stop violence today. But what about the next day or the next week? What we need are parents, community members, shining examples in society to come forward and guide our youth.”

Jansen said that early childhood education also needed to be analysed.

“We lose half a million kids from grade one to matric. Early education is vital.”

Jansen recently announced that he would be stepping down from his position at UFS to take up an invitation as a Fellow at the Centre for Advanced Studies in the Behavioural Sciences at the US’s Stanford University in September 2016.

Modise ‘wasted money’ on appeal

image

JOHANNESBURG – The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says parliamentary funds have been wasted on appealing a high court judgment, which ruled in favour of their party leader Julius Malema.

The Supreme Court of Appeal has dismissed an application by the National Council of Provinces Chairperson Thandi Modise, after a ruling that she acted incorrectly, by asking Malema to leave the National Assembly.

Malema had said government massacred Marikana mineworkers and was asked to withdraw his statement.

Last year, the Western Cape High Court set aside Modise’s decision to ask Malema to leave the National Assembly.

Modise argued that Malema’s utterances were unparliamentary.

The EFF’s Mbuyiseni Ndlozi says this was an obvious decision. “It was a frivolous appeal on her part that should never have ended in court. All it needed was proper judgment on the part of the presiding officers so that we don’t waste money.”

It’s unclear whether Modise continue to pursue the matter.

North West businessman who brutally assaulted a boy and got away with just a R300 fine by a local court could soon be back in the dock.

On Wednesday Sowetan reported about the plight of a 14-year-old who was stripped naked, tied to a coffee table and severely assaulted in full view of his friends by a local businessman in Itsoseng, Lichtenburg, for allegedly stealing a PlayStation console.

The Ditsobotla Magistrate’s Court freed the businessman on a R300 fine last Thursday after he had pleaded guilty.

But the family of the boy – who is now struggling to urinate and is bunking school – has cried foul over the handling of the case.

The video showing the whole incident in September 2014 has since gone viral and could become crucial evidence in the case.

It had not been considered when the case went to court.

Those who helped the businessman beat up the boy could also face charges.

This after the National Prosecuting Authority in the province ordered the control prosecutor at the Ditsobotla Magistrate’s Court to provide the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) with the relevant police docket and a full report regarding the procedure followed when issuing the fine.

NPA spokesman Frank Lesenyego said the DPP would take a decision on the next course of action after receiving all the information.

“Consideration will be given to what’s in the docket and the procedure that was used to come to that decision,” Lesenyego said.

He said the DPP was going to carefully consider all the facts in the video and make a decision on what should be done.

In the video, seen by Sowetan, there were people who helped the businessman to assault the boy.

“We need to separate the two powers of the police investigation and the prosecution,” Lesenyego said.

“If they say the video is legitimate, the people who we see helping the man in that video could also be charged.

“We are going to consider all the information available to us,” Lesenyego said.

Meanwhile, the family of the boy said they want the case to run its full course.

They are also thinking of taking civil action for compensation while the businessman is tried for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

They believe that the compensation will ensure that the boy finds closure as well as take care of his medical and educational needs.

‘Taung-born doctor pulls all stops’

image

Taung- A doctor has urged the matrics to focus on their dreams.

The 29-year-old Boitumelo Phakathi is South Africa’s youngest black female surgeon.

“I just completed my masters in general surgery. I see it as a great achievement, especially to achieve it at such a young age, because many people quit along the way. It’s been a challenge. It takes a minimum of five years to complete a masters degree and you spend long hours at the hospital,” said Phakathi.

Phakathi, from Taung in the North West, said her dream of becoming a doctor was inspired by her desire to contribute to improving the health services in South Africa.

Phakathi said although she did not have the money for university, she researched how she may be able to get funding.

“In my first year I struggled, but I used a loan from NSFAS, but towards the end of my first year I got a bursary from North West Province.”
