Modise ‘wasted money’ on appeal

JOHANNESBURG – The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says parliamentary funds have been wasted on appealing a high court judgment, which ruled in favour of their party leader Julius Malema.

The Supreme Court of Appeal has dismissed an application by the National Council of Provinces Chairperson Thandi Modise, after a ruling that she acted incorrectly, by asking Malema to leave the National Assembly.

Malema had said government massacred Marikana mineworkers and was asked to withdraw his statement.

Last year, the Western Cape High Court set aside Modise’s decision to ask Malema to leave the National Assembly.

Modise argued that Malema’s utterances were unparliamentary.

The EFF’s Mbuyiseni Ndlozi says this was an obvious decision. “It was a frivolous appeal on her part that should never have ended in court. All it needed was proper judgment on the part of the presiding officers so that we don’t waste money.”

It’s unclear whether Modise continue to pursue the matter.
