A student from the Potchefstroom Campus of the North West University (NWU) drowned on Saturday after he and his friends went for a swim at the Campus pool.
According to the university, Xavier Klein,19, is from Groblershoop in the Northern Cape. A first-year student from the Laureus residence on the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University (NWU) and two of his friends went for a swim at the Fanie du Toit swimming pool on the Campus.
Xavier mentioned that he had stomach ache after a couple of lengths and decided to sit on the side of the pool for a while. He started swimming again, and got into trouble.
When his friends noticed that there was something wrong with him, together with other students from the water polo team got him out of the pool and immediately started with Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
An Emergency Services was called and he was taken to MediClinic but unfortunately passed away.
Xavier’s family has been assisted with travel and accommodation arrangements as well as counseling by the acting rector of the Potchefstroom Campus, Prof Fika Janse van Rensburg.
The cause of death is still unknown.
