GOVERNMENT departments gathered together at Ganyesa village in Dr Ruth Mompati district to commemorate 16 Days of activism against women and children abuse. The event was also marked as celebration for people with disabilities.
Dr Ruth Mompati district spokesperson, Joseph Motlhasedi said: “The targeted groups were persons with disabilities, women and children. We brought all stakeholders to come and conduct workshops. We also registered unemployed people on our database. Various departments encouraged people with disabilities to form co-operatives so that they can access necessary support from government.”
Dr Ruth Mompati district forum for people with disabilities chairperson, Thys Mahura said they wanted to see improvement in government.
“As a forum, our aim is to see people with disabilities being treated equally. There is a lot to be done especially within government regarding people with disabilities. For instance, there are no ramps in most government institutions to cater for them. The equity employment process has been disregarded. It is high time now that government departments put major plans in place.
“They need to be treated with admiration. Being disabled does not mean one is mediocre to towards another human being. We are all equivalent before God. We need to budge away from the accustomed presentations where diverse departments do not present their diplomacy regarding services obtainable to people with disabilities.”
Buoyant Lizzy Moss from Culture, Arts and Traditional Affairs (CATA) encouraged people with disabilities to make use of the educational opportunities offered by her department.
“We offering computer training and ABET training. One does not have to recompense even a cent. Also, no level of education required. We also have sporting activities, so you can take part,” she said.
Moss received a silver medal in cycling and her dream was to participate in Olympics one day.
