‘One nabbed for being in possession of drugs’

A 27 year-old man was arrested on Friday after he was found in possession of drugs suspected to be mandrax.  Northern Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant Donald Mhluli said that the two members from Kimberley Crime Prevention Unit were busy patrolling the area next to Monument Spar in Kimberley when they noticed a suspicious man.

“A man hastened his footsteps and ran away after he spotted the police. The two members got out of the van and chased after the suspect. The suspect was arrested and searched. Police found about 200 suspected mandrax tablets to the street value of about R30 000,” Mdhluli said.

He said the suspect was arrested and is facing the charge of possession of drugs.

“He is expected to appear in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court soon. The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Risimati Peter Shivuri has welcomed the arrest and applauded the two police officers for being vigilant after arresting the suspect.”

Northern Cape police launched operation ‘Duty Calls’

THE Northern Cape police said that they have intensified their safety campaign after launching operation Duty Calls on Friday. Provincial police spokesperson, colonel Priscilla Naidu said: “The end of the year is drawing closer so many people will be going away on holiday and many activities will be taking place during the festive season. During this time police are required to be even more vigilant ensuring that the people of South Africa are safe.”

Naidu said that during festive period, police will be concentrating their efforts around aggravated robberies. She said that the proliferation of firearms, second hand goods, tracing and arresting of wanted suspects as well as road and border security will be looked at.

“During this time of the year, crimes against women and children tend to reach alarming proportions because of the abuse of alcohol and other dependence producing substances. Liquor outlets (taverns) will be regularly visited to ensure that tavern owners are complying with the liquor laws.” she said.

Operation Duty Calls was launched on Thursday last week and will be on going throughout the festive season and beyond. Naidu said that the operation has started in the province clusters.

 

“Operations took place in the Central Business District, Shopping Malls and taverns as well as surrounding areas. Various  role players including the  Department of Home Affairs, Northern Cape Liquor Board,  Sol Plaatje Municipality and Community Police Forums, Kimberley K9 unit and members from SAPS Galeshewe and Kimberley  have teamed up to eradicate crime and violence in our communities.”

‘One injured in a car crash’

A snarl up on the N1 north near the Botha Avenue off- ramp this afternoon left one person seriously injured.

Netcare spokesperson, Chris Botha said that the exact details to the cause of the accident and preceding events will remain a subject for police investigation and comment.

“Netcare 911 paramedics and the fire services arrived at the scene at around 4pm and found the highway littered with accident debris and the twisted frames of the vehicles. One person was still trapped in the twisted frame of his vehicle. Miraculously the occupants of the other three vehicles escaped uninjured,” Botha said.

He said that while firemen used the Jaws of Life to free the seriously wounded man medics clambered into the vehicle to stabilise him. Botha said that after he was extricated and immobilised on a trauma board, they transported him to a local hospital for the care that he required.

‘North West premier sends heartfelt condolences to Bozwana’s family’

South African National Civic Organization (SANCO) in the North West province dismissed the Democratic Alliance (DA)’s call for an investigation into tender procedures involving murdered businessman Wandile Bozwana. Provincial chairperson, Paul Sebegoe said that the DA’s call was a political opportunism and a shameful afterthought.

Sebegoe said: “DA leader in the Provincial Legislature, Chris Hattingh’s call is insensitive. Bozwana’s family is grieving the loss of their loved one who died under mysterious circumstances that have left our communities and the entire country reeling with shock. It rings hollow because Hattingh failed to call for the probe into tender awarding while Bozwana was still alive to answer to allegations of impropriety.”

He said that the party as an opponent of Black Economic Empowerment was desperate to discredit the ANC government for its political expediency and credit ahead of the 2016 local government elections.

“To the DA, every black businessperson that gets business from government is corrupt; therefore squeezing political mileage at their expense even in their death is equally justified. Some of the disagreements between the provincial government and aggrieved business in the province were resolved in competent and impartial courts of law while some are pending for resolution in the Constitutional Court.

“Ignoring that there is a national tender and procurement reform process to rid the awarding of tenders of fraud and corruption by dragging counter allegations to a political process will only serve as a platform for cheap politicking.” Sebegoe added.

Sebegoe also appealed for the Bozwana family to be given the space and respect to mourn the death of their loved one with dignity and to allow the law to take its course.

Meanwhile North West premier Supra Mahumapelo condemned those who wrote speculations regarding Bozwana’s death on media and social networks to refrain from that.

“The Bokone Bophirima provincial government has learnt with shock and disbelief about the fatal shooting of Wandile Bozwana. It is our belief that the South African law enforcement agencies in collaboration with communities will find the perpetrators,” Mahumapelo said.

He said that they urge all and sundry to allow the law to take its course.

“We are perplexed by insinuations made by individuals such as Themba Gwabeni and Chris Hattingh that the incident may be related to the matter that the provincial government appealed at the constitutional court relating to a company called Tsoga. We encourage Gwabeni and Hattingh to approach the law enforcement agencies as a matter of urgency with information instead of raising suspicions.”

‘Shocking video footage evidence’ delays murder case

VIDEO footage evidence that is said to be shocking, has led to the postponement of a case against a former female councillor accused of plotting to kill the North West premier Supra Mahumapelo.

The woman has been charged with two accounts of conspiracy to murder. She allegedly wanted Mahumapelo and present Mahikeng mayor Gosiame Seatlholo dead and consulted a sangoma to do the job.

Lawyers representing Gaasite Legalatladi, 43, on Thursday requested they be given time to study the video footage and pictures presented by the state as evidence. The case was then postponed to February 4 next year. The woman appeared in the Lehurutshe Magistrate’s Court.

Although the contents of the video evidence have not been made public, authorities described the footage as shocking. At the time of her arrest in December last year, the Hawks said that Legalatladi was caught on camera, naked, undergoing rituals at a sanagoma’s house in Mmasebudule village, near Zeerust.

She allegedly approached the traditional healer on November 21 asking for muti to kill Mahumapelo and Seatlholo. The traditional healer blew the lid on her and police set up cameras leading to Legalatladi’s arrest.

Defence lawyer Butch Schoeman said: “We requested the state to postpone the matter because there was new evidence by the state. In order for us to adequately prepare for the case, we need to familiarise ourselves with the new photos and video footage.”

Premier Mahumapelo said: “We welcome the postponement and we hope all evidence will be revealed before the court of law when the case resumes. I do not bear grudges and if she can apologise, she will be forgiven.”

The reason behind the intended hit was that Mahumapelo allegedly stole a farm that belonged to Legalatladi’s parents.

As for Seatlholo, Legalatladi allegedly claimed that the mayor was given her post.

‘Residents advised to vaccinate animals to avoid infection’

MORE than 2192 dogs and 112 cats were vaccinated for rabies across the province last week. The Northern Cape Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development’ spokesperson Phemelo Manankong said that rabies was a disease which affected people’s health and can cause the brain infection.

“The virus causes death in most instances and it is shed in saliva, and is spread by bite of an infected animal. The significant blitz campaign was part of celebrating International Rabies month that is been celebrated on the September every year,” Manankong said.
He said that as part of the campaign, also about 108 animals were sterilized or castrated. Manankong said that the campaign further created awareness about this fatal but preventable disease at various schools.

“The department also organised a scientific evening for medical and
veterinary related professions where Professor Lucille Blumberg and Dr Claude
Sebeta gave presentation on the testing of the disease and the medical
treatment of the patience.

“We’re appealing to communities to continue vaccinating
their animals and protect them as rabies is a very dangerous
disease. It is also important that dogs and cats should be vaccinated to
reduce the risk to people and animals.”

According to Manankong, the cases of rabies have been minimal in the province.

Manankong said that even though there were minimized cases being reported, he advised people to continue to vaccinate their animals.

“The campaign also gave three veterinary students an opportunity to get
hands-on experience and was allowed to castrate dogs under
supervision.”

Kohler Barnard demoted to Public Works

CAPE TOWN – Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane has reshuffled his “shadow cabinet”, dropping, among others, controversial MP Dianne Kohler Barnard from the police portfolio.

She’s now Deputy Shadow Minister responsible for Public Works.

Zakhele Mbhele will take over from Kohler Barnard, who hit the headlines this week over a Facebook post she shared which seemed to urge the return of former apartheid-era president PW Botha.

“In this instance I certainly didn’t think the tweet was fair or proper,” said Maimane.

“In fact it was indefensible, in fact we needed to take a decision in this regard.

“But that’s within the purview of my right as leader of the caucus in the NA,” he said.

Reports: ‘North West businessman killed in a hit’

A 40 year-old man died in hospital after he was shot while travelling to Mooikloof.

According to ANCYL member in North West, Thabo Arafat Molamu said that Wandile Bozwana assassinated.

Molamu wrote on his personal Facebook page account confirming the death of Bozwana on Friday.

It is alleged that Bozwana who was a business owner and his colleague, were taken to local hospital under critical condition following a shooting in Pretoria on Friday.

The shooting is believed to be a hit, but a motive is not yet known.

The shooting occurred just before 16:00.

According to www.news24.com, police said Wandile Bozwana, who owned energy drinking company Orgazma Special Energy Drink, was travelling on the N1 north from Johannesburg with his colleague Mpho Baloyi in the driver’s seat.

A silver grey BMW M3 allegedly pulled next to their car near the Garsfontein off-ramp.

According to police, the suspects in the car started shooting at the branded yellow Renault Clio.

About 12 bullets hit the car with nine of them hitting Bozwana, five in the lower back.

Baloyi was shot twice, but managed to drive to a car dealership near Menlyn Shopping Centre to seek help.

Police spokesperson sergeant Asnath Malatji told www.news24.com that the pair was coming from Sandton heading to Mooikloof.

She said they were investigating an attempted murder case.

“At this stage, we don’t know the motive, but are appealing to people who might have seen the incident to come forward with information to ensure the suspects are arrested,” she added.

The bullet-riddled car was still being combed for evidence more than an hour after the incident. The pair was taken to Unitas hospital where Bozwana later died according to unconfirmed reports.

The scene attracted several bystanders.

Motorists on the N1 at the time of the incident called EWN radio station and said they had seen one person jumping out of the car and opening fire at the other vehicle. The BMW then sped off. No arrests have been made.

Bozwana was recently in logger heads with North West Provincial Government over money owed to him, and he took them to court.

‘North West police to exhume the remains of farm-worker’

THE Congress Of South African Trade Union (Cosatu)  in North West said they will be part of the body exhumation that is scheduled to take place in Rustenburg on Friday morning at 04:00am.

This came about after a man found buried in a shallow grave two weeks ago.

Cosatu provincial secretary, Solly Phetoe said that he was highly appalled by the manner in which farm workers were continued to be badly treated.

He said the lives of the farm workers had been taken cheap on the farms across the province.

The body of an unknown man was found buried along R24 road next to the property belonging to the MF Jonker Farm Trust at number 302 in Rustenburg.

The burial was allegedly discovered by a construction company that was building the road in the area.

Phetoe said that they were called upon to the scene and discovered a body of a man buried in a shallow grave next to the dilapidated house.

“We are concerned that who are the killer/s of that farm worker. , We call on the Human Rights Commission to investigate the ill-treatment of farm workers across the country. We want the grave to be properly exhumed and deeper investigations be conducted.

“It seems that the owner of the farm could not shed more light on what really transpired,” Phetoe said.

Phetoe said that they will be part of the exhumation. He continued to urge the farm workers to speak out and expose bad treatment they receive from farm owners.

He further added that they will remain adamant that other graves that were 100m away be also investigated.
