‘DA’s claim absurd and distasteful, says North West Health MEC’

THE Democratic Alliance in North West was left with an egg on their face after they accused the North West Health department of neglecting a patient who was left paralysed after the caesarean operation during her child’s birth.

North West Health department MEC Dr Magome Masike visited the patient in Tswelelang Township, near Wolmaransstad of Friday. Masike said that he was shocked at the level of desperation displayed by the Democratic Alliance in the province after the party issued a statement claiming to have visited a woman who was paralysed after delivering her own baby in Wolmaransstad last week.

Masike said the party claimed that was caused because of ill-treatment by the department.

Masike visited the woman on Friday in attempt to assess her. He found the woman walking normally, contrary to DA allegations.

“The patient was found at home with her mother. The department can now confirm that the patient is neither paralysed nor bedridden as she came out of the bedroom walking and carrying her baby. Due to lack of understanding of medical procedures and health expertise, the DA missed the point in this case thus making absurd allegations. DA legislature member, Dr Tutu Faleni failed to understand that the patient underwent a caesarean section where epidural (spinal) anaesthesia was used.” Masike said.

He said that this was done to avoid patient being put to sleep completely. According to Masike, the normal post operations result of this nature is numbness which the DA confused it with paralysis.

Masike said: “As far as the department is concerned, the operation was successful and a healthy baby boy was delivered. The patient was discharged with treatment and referred back to Nic Bodenstein hospital on September 15 in a stable condition without complaints. She was observed until discharged while still in stable condition.

“I am disturbed at how low the DA in the province is willing to go in attempt to discredit the good work we are doing to render health services to the people. This is not the first time that the DA makes false claims about health service delivery in the province. We can only conclude that they are desperate in their electioneering antics.”

The DA’s parliamentary member in the North West, Dr Tutu Faleni said they were concerned after Malitaba Moloisana, 32, was left paralysed after being forced to deliver her baby through caesarean.

“The DA visited the mother of three at her home in Tswelelang Township in Wolmaransstad after learning more of her shocking ordeal. According to Moloisana, she went to Nic Bodenstein hospital on September 11 this year where doctors began a caesarean operation on her. She said that the doctor later stitched her up after unsuccessful birth through caesarean section.

“Still in pain, she was transferred to Klerksdorp hospital which is nearly 80km away where she finally delivered her baby. Her efforts, unassisted by any medical practitioners left her with serious internal damage that has caused paralysis. Moloisana is now unable to care for her children as she used to.” Faleni said.

The department spokesperson Tebogo Lekgethwane said they urge members of communities not to make conclusions about health conditions of patients when they are not experts in the area.

“After assessing the patient, the MEC assured that the necessary care was provided in ensuring both her safety and that of her baby at the time of delivery despite her critical condition and pregnancy complications at the time.

“Both the mother and the baby are in good condition. MEC also assessed the patient postoperative wound to establish that it is healing,” Lekgethwane said.
