Motshekga played us like a yoyo – teachers’ union

Durban – President of the National Teachers Union [Natu], Sthe Ngema, said on Wednesday Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga played the union “like a yoyo”.

Speaking at a media briefing in Durban, the union addressed the controversial writing of the Annual National Assessments (ANAs), which will be administered between December 1 and 4.

Ngcobo said, “We objected to the minister for openly going to the media and announcing that the ANAs would be written this year because we felt that she was playing us like a yoyo”.

He said proper consultative processes had not been followed.

Good Samaritan ‘tried to save taxi driver’s life’

Port Elizabeth – Despite a passer-by’s efforts to save a taxi driver, who was shot several times at a Northern Areas taxi rank in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday afternoon, the 21-year-old driver died on his way to hospital.

The Good Samaritan, witnessing the shooting, jumped into the taxi Donly Sayers was in and rushed him to hospital, Nelson Mandela Bay police spokesperson Sandra Janse van Rensburg said.

R7m payout for Zwaarvirdiend residents

Rustenburg – Former residents of Zwaarvirdiend, outside Rustenburg in the North West, who were forcibly moved off their land, received financial compensation amounting to R7 million on Tuesday.

“Take care of this money, it will take care of you,” said North West Rural, Environmental and Agricultural Development MEC Manketse Tlhape.

The community was dispossessed of their land rights in 1939 and did not receive just and equitable compensation at the time.

The financial compensation awarded to eight families amounted to a total of R917 926.02 each.

Zuma suspends Phiyega

Johannesburg – Police commissioner General Riah Phiyega has been suspended while an inquiry into her fitness to hold office is conducted, the Presidency announced on Wednesday afternoon.

“The suspension is to endure pending any decision that is made following upon the recommendations of the Board of Inquiry into allegations of misconduct, her fitness to hold office and her capacity to execute official duties efficiently,” a statement reads.

President Jacob Zuma decided to show Phiyega the door following her giving him reasons why she should stay in office.

‘Ganyesa man arrested for armed robbery’

A 31 year-old man was arrested by police in a sting operation in Ganyesa village, near Vryburg. James Mohatle appeared before Ganyesa Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

North West police spokesperson, Captain Paul Ramaloko said that Mohatle was arrested for robbery and being in possession of unlicensed firearm.

“He was arrested during a joint intelligence driven operation by Ganyesa Detectives, Vryburg Dog Unit and Crime Intelligence.  Mohatle’s arrest came after he robbed a business at Papsani village in Ganyesa and took a security guard’s firearm.” Ramaloko said.

He said that the team arrested Mohatle at his residential area and confiscated a hand gun which was found hidden on top of the stationary vehicle.

The case against Mohatle was postponed until Monday, and he will remain in custody.

Mohatle was jailed to 23 years in prison and was recently released on parole.

Setlagole alleged ‘rapist’ killed by mob justice

A 27 year-old man was murdered in Setlagole village, near Mahikeng on Monday.

North West police spokesperson, Captain Paul Ramaloko said that Phillip Reabola was fatally assaulted by mob justice after he allegedly raped a woman.

“A 24 year-old female victim alleges that the suspect approached her at Letsapa tavern on Sunday evening, in Setlagole. The suspect and the victim went to the Complex Garage together afterwards. According to the woman, Reabola allegedly asked her to accompanied him to Madibogo.”

Ramaloko said that the victim refused, and escaped from the man. He said that the woman alleged that the deceased followed her until they reached Malebogo primary school in Setlagole where the rape took place.

“The man allegedly dragged the victim into the field and raped her. He then took her to the RDP houses where the atrocity continues. It is further alleged that the victims’ relatives and friends went to search for the suspect at his place, and found him asleep. The group of people took the man to the local chief where he was later found badly assaulted by police.”

According to Ramaloko, the deceased was taken to the local clinic and succumbed to his injuries at around 08:30am on Monday.

Police are investigating a case of rape and murder and no one has been arrested yet.

Vryburg farmer, son appeal sentences

FARMER and his son who were each sentenced to 18 years and 24 years respectively for killing their worker are set to approach the Supreme Court of Appeal in a bid to stay out of prison.

Mathys Cloete, 76, and his son Daniel, 34, were found guilty two weeks ago by the North West High Court of the murder of Bakang Moleko.

The court heard that Moleko was severely assaulted and tortured by the Cloetes, who accused him of stealing 50 litres of diesel and two tyres at their Boshoek farm in September 2012.

They chained him and electrocuted him with a car battery. The North West High Court sitting in Vryburg, sentenced them to 18 years’ and 24 years’ imprisonment respectively.

‘Bathtub killer’ faces new theft rap’

A MAN accused of murdering his girlfriend and leaving her body in a bathtub at a North West guesthouse now faces an additional charge of theft.

Olebogeng Molemi,26, appeared in the Zeerust Magistrate’s Court yesterday where an additional charge of theft was added to the murder charge.

Molema allegedly made off with I’d book and cellphone of his alleged victim, Pelotlhomogi Moremedi. He is accused of stabbing Moremedi in the neck and stomach at the Gatelo guesthouse in Zeerust in July.

He went missing for almost two months before police received a tip-off that he was in Rustenburg, North West.

Molema was remanded in custody and his bail application will be heard on October 19.
