THE North West provincial government announced that newly-elected ANCYL president Collen Maine remains in his position as provincial MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements.
Acting provincial government spokesperson Brian Setswambung said: “Collen Maine remains as MEC for Human Settlements and Local Government for now unless otherwise. We have not received any formal resignation letter from Maine himself, so situation remains unchanged.”
Maine was elected to lead the ANCYL a month ago. ANCYL secretary general, Njabulo Nzuza said that the ANCYL National Executive Committee (NEC) was the only structure that could decide which positions becomes full time.
“The constitution described that the NEC is the only structure that decide which positions will be run as full time. So far, there are four full time positions. Secretary General, Head of Organiser and Media Liaison Officer. It really does not matter whether the president continues with his job as MEC or not.” Nzuza said.
However the decision sparks political outcry. Economic Freedom Fighters in Ngaka Modiri Molema region said that they regard Maine’s decision as unethical.
EFF regional spokesperson, Seitebogeng Nkitseng said: “Maine is not prepared to give up his R1.6 million salary which he enjoys with the benefits of a luxury of a plush sedan and a state-owned house as MEC. This comes after the league’s national executive committee decided that the role of the president would not be a full-time.”
Nkitseng said that while it has been the tradition in the league to have the president
full time at the ANC’s headquarters, Luthuli House, ANCYL has resorted to its mother body tactics of playing paper games.
“We have seen how the ANC will resort to changing the rules if they are not comfortable with them, which forms part of the prevalent political culture of tribal nepotism and corruption in the ANC. The ANCYL will continue to utter rhetoric slogans of revolution and economic freedom, but remains captured by politics of the belly,” she said.
