Medupi: Eskom’s R105bn project

Lephalale – President Jacob Zuma opened South Africa’s first new power plant in 20 years on Sunday with a warning that the country’s perennial energy shortages were hampering economic growth.

Construction on the six-unit, 4 764 MW Medupi plant near Lephalale, about 350km north of Johannesburg, was started in 2007 but the first 794 megawatts (MW) only came online this week after delays due to strikes, technical issues and cost overruns.

Musician allegedly assaulted in Joburg

Johannesburg – A male relative of one of South Africa’s Struggle icons is being investigated for allegedly assaulting a woman, police said on Sunday.

“A case of assault has been opened and (the) investigation is ongoing,” said police spokeswoman Mashadi Selepe.

Under South African law, a suspect’s identity cannot be revealed until the start of the trial.

According to the Sunday Times weekly, the alleged assault took place at a house in Houghton, Johannesburg.

The alleged victim was identified as a 39-year-old musician.

Two remanded in custody in Rustenburg

TWO suspects were denied bail by Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court after they were arrested for being in possession of suspected stolen property.

Khulekane Tshuma, 41, Sbonelo Ndlovu, 26, and Nhlanhla Ngwenya, 19, briefly appeared before Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

They were arrested on the N4 off-ramp towards Rustenburg on suspicion that they were responsible for robbery that occurred earlier in Swartruggens where cellphones and cash were taken.

 

North West police spokesperson, col Sabata Mokgwabone said the two suspects allegedly managed to evade the arrest when they were stopped by the police. “It is alleged that at the time of arrest, the accused were driving in a red Toyota Quantum.  Preliminary investigation was conducted, and two of them were positively linked to the Swartruggens robbery while the other one was linked to several robberies in Rustenburg,” Mokgwabone said.

 

Mokgwabone said the suspects are further linked to other cases in Zeerust and Magaliesburg where well-known chain stores were robbed off cellphones and cash. They were remanded in custody until Wednesday, (9 September 2015).

A 75 year-old woman arrested in Tauñg

A 75-year-old elderly woman was arrested in Mokgareng village, Taung on Saturday. According to information,  police received a tip-off one of the member s of the community that there is a bag of dagga in her house.

North West police spokesperson, sergeant Kelebogile Moleko said police acted swiftly and allegedly found bag of dagga in the house.

“A 75 year-old woman was arrested and will appear at Taung Magistrate’s Court on Monday for being in possession of dagga. She was subsequently arrested and police investigations continue,” she said.

Mandela grandson faces assault charge- report

Johannesburg – A grandson of late former president Nelson Mandela, accused of raping an underage girl, also faces an assault charge, according to a report on Sunday.

According to Eyewitness News, an assault case was opened at the Norwood police station by a 41-year-old woman, after the grandson allegedly assaulted her earlier this month.

A police spokesperson told the broadcaster a case had been opened, with the investigation ongoing.

Regarding the grandson’s rape case, he was granted bail by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old man, who may not be named until he has pleaded, was released on R7 000 bail.

He was alleged to have raped a teenage girl at a pub in Greenside, Johannesburg earlier this month. While the accused has not yet pleaded, he has maintained that he and the complainant had consensual sex.

A Nathan Paulse penalty goal saw Ajax Cape Town into the final of the 2015 MTN8 after beating a ten-man Bidvest Wits 1-0 in a second leg semifinal match at Bidvest Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The result saw Ajax winning the two legged affair 2-1 on aggregate.

It was a fast start to the game with the first opening coming in the third minute for Wits when Onismor Bhasera met a right wing cross, but he knocked his effort over from a couple of yards out.

Two minutes later Riyaad Norodien broke into the Wits box from the right side, but his 16-yard shot struck the side netting.

Lebese targets MTN8 top scorer

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Lebese admits he has his eye on the MTN8 top goalscorer award, but as long as Amakhosi defend the trophy.

Chiefs are into the Final following a 2-1 aggregate victory over Bloemfontein Celtic after Lebese’s solitary goal gave them a 2-1 win in the semi-final, second leg on Saturday night.

Lebese is now on three goals for the tournament, with Bidvest Wits duo Sibusiso Vilakazi (2) and Henrico Botes (2) the other main contenders.
