Potchefstroom- A 68-year-man was shot and killed by unknown suspects on Tuesday at around 05:45am.

Koos Van Der Leeuw was allegedly shot dead and the suspects drove off with a Subaru vehicle with no registration numbers.   

North West police spokesperson major Pelonomi Makau said: “It is alleged that one of the suspects approached a man who was about to do a cash transaction with the victim, at the abattoir in Potchefstroom Industria and demanded money. He was instructed to lie on the ground and an undisclosed amount of cash and his cellphone were allegedly taken from him,” she said.

Makau said four shots were allegedly fired towards Van der Leeuw and he was shot in the head.

The suspects fled the scene.

The victim was rushed to hospital for medical treatment.

“At first, a case of attempted murder and robbery was registered, later the charge was changed to murder, after the victim died in hospital. The police are continue with the search for the suspects and urge the members of the community to come forward with any information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects,” she said.
