Cape Town – The Department of Basic Education revealed this week that one in four South African schools don’t offer maths in Grades 10, 11 and 12.
The figure was contained in a written reply to the DA’s spokesperson for basic education, Annette Lovemore.
Here is a list of the most important factoids from the department’s response:
1. 75.7% of schools in South Africa offer maths in Grades 10, 11 and 12. That’s 4 484 of the 5 927 schools in the country.

Taung – The Department of Tourism in the North West will spend its 67 minutes Address tourism product gaps as per the grading assessment report, which includes infrastructure and access for people with disability and further promoting and marketing of tourism product in Taung on Friday.
The Department will be joining the provincial executive council and the Setsokotsana programme in Taung in promoting tourism products in Villages Small Dorpies and Township. The venture will also address the geographical spread and seasonality challenges in the tourism sector in the area, as well as promoting enterprise support, especially on tourism products owned by Africans especially women.
Based on the outline, the MEC for Tourism Desbo Mohono has identified Modisa Lodge in Taung as a pilot project to execute the Nelson Mandela day celebrations for this year. This will also promote Agriculture, Culture and Tourism policy pronouncement.
The North West tourism team will among others be engaged in the following:
1. Identification of infrastructure and access into Modisa guest lodge for people with disability.
2. Enterprise support interventions, which includes erection of signage and many other activities.

The Northern Cape Provincial Government will be honouring provincial sportsmen and women who have worked hard to fly the provincial flag high.
The provincial government will be launching the first annual Northern Cape Sport and Recreation Awards on Thursday, 20 August 2015 at the Mayibuye Multi-purpose centre in Kimberley.
The prestigious ceremony will be celebrated under the theme “Today’s champions, tomorrow’s legends.”
The sport awards have been created to recognise and honour individuals and teams who have excelled both on and off the field of play. Those to be recognised should have taken part in various sporting codes from 01 April 2009 to 31 March 2015.
The nomination process was opened from 1st June until 15 July 2015.
The process has allowed various sporting federations, league clubs and other interested parties to nominate their preferred sporting personalities from 16 identified categories. The process has seen the Sportsman of the Year category taking the lead with 7 nominations followed by the Coach of the Year, Newcomer of the Year as well as the Sportswoman of the Year categories.
Categories on people with disabilities are still lagging behind.
The categories seeks to recognise individuals, males, females, people with disability, continental participants, federations, schools and community sport volunteers.
They include awarding recognition to the Sport Star of the year, Sportsman and woman of the year, Sportsman and woman of the year with disability, Newcomer of the year, Coach of the year, Team of the year, Federation of the year, Administrator of the year, Volunteer of the year, Referee of the year, Stakeholder of the year, School Team of the year, Developing school team of the year as well as the School sport structure of the year.
“The department acknowledges submitted nominations which will be subjected to an intensive audit process. We have however extended the deadline for nominations in the category of people with disabilities and encourage relevant bodies to make submissions,” departmental spokesperson, Morapedi Sekhoane said.

TAUNG- In what could be an unprecedented move ever in the history of housing development in Bokone Bophirima, housing developers are expected to pledge their support to build houses for destitute families in and around the Province as part of commemoration of the International Nelson Mandela Day which is celebrated on 18 July every year.
As the rest of South Africans and the world will be dedicating 67 minutes of their time to providing humanitarian work for destitute families, MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements, Collen Maine has also identified a number of impoverished families who are staying in either dilapidated mud houses or shacks to benefit from donations from housing developers.
The United Nations declared July 2009, Nelson Mandela International Day in recognition of Madiba’s contribution to global peace and freedom whilst the 67 minutes symbolises 67 years on uninterrupted and selfless service by him (Madiba) to the people of South Africa. This year’s message is :
“Take Action – Inspire Change – Make Every Day a Mandela Day”.
MEC Maine will meet with these housing developers at a meeting to be held as follows:

PAMPIERSTAD- A 20-year-old man was arrested in connection of rape in Majakgoro village, near Pampierstad.
According Northern Cape police, the incident took place on Tuesday at Majakgoro village where a 11 year-old girl was allegedly raped by the suspect.
“We arrested a 20 year-old man in connection of rape and he will appear in court on Wednesday. The atrocity took place yesterday in Majakgoro village, near Pampierstad” Pampierstad Police Station spokesperson, Warrant Officer Thuso Setumiso said.

Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta has confirmed the length of Dino Ndlovu’s contract after the player successfully completed a medical examination.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns, Bloemfontein Celtic, Bnei Yehuda, Maccabi Haifa, SuperSport United and Mpumalanga Black Aces marksman has penned a one-year deal with an option for a further two years.
Ndlovu spent the second half of last season at Mpumalanga Black Aces for whom he scored two goals in six starts.

Orlando Pirates have reportedly agreed an undisclosed fee with Egyptian side Zamalek for the transfer of striker Kermit Erasmus.
Reports of Zamalek interest surfaced in Egyptian media earlier today, but KickOff.com can reveal that the Cairo-based club have already approached Pirates, who have agreed to let the 25-year-old negotiate personal terms before anything is made official.
