Greater Taung municipality safe bombed

GREATER Taung municipal office safe in Reivilo was allegedly bombed by unknown people, says North West police.

Pudimoe cluster spokesperson, sergeant Tebogo Thebe said police were called to the scene after the unknown people entered the Greater Taung Municipality office based in Reivilo and bombed the safe.

Even though Thebe could not say how much amount of money was stolen, he said police are working around the clock amid the situation.

“We can confirm that Greater Taung municipality office safe based in Reivilo was bombed by unknown people. The incident took place on Sunday and we cannot say how much money was stolen because we still waiting for internal process to take place and inform us how much was in the safe,” Thebe said.

He said the police cannot rule out if what happened might be inside job, but they will leave no stones unturned.

Police said no one has been arrested and it is alleged that the suspects fled the scene after the incident.

Police investigations continue.

Cosatu backs Huguenot Tunnel strike


Cape Town – Cosatu in the Western Cape said on Monday it was throwing its weight behind the Huguenot Tunnel workers who are currently on strike.

The workers went on strike on June 25 after talks collapsed between the employer (Tolcon) and the SA Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu). Talks were facilitated by the CCMA.

Alleged Polokwane wife killer back in court


Polokwane – The Limpopo businessman accused of murdering his wife was expected back in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

During his last appearance, Rameez Patel was granted bail of R250 000.

At the time, Magistrate Mohammed Shaik said exceptional circumstances, namely that the couple’s children needed to be looked after, justified his release.

SACP to reflect on its relevance to working class


Johannesburg – The SA Communist Party will this week reflect on how to better reposition itself, following criticism that it no longer represents the working class.

SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande on Monday said members would reflect on what kind of organisation they wanted to build, at a special national congress which starts in Soweto on Tuesday.

“We are a vanguard party with a mass character. That is how we have defined ourselves,” he said.

“We are building this communist party within the context of an alliance at this point in time, but as our late general secretary would have said, comrade Chris [Hani], we need a communist party which is adaptable and flexible to any conditions that may arise. That’s what we trying to do.”

Mamelodi taxi drivers to hold talks


Pretoria – Minibus taxi drivers in Mamelodi have agreed to hold talks with government about the violence in the area, which was prompted by the arrival of a new bus operator.

They have promised to stop their protest and allow Autopax buses to run unhindered in the township. The undertaking followed a meeting held on Monday afternoon with Tshwane mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa, Passenger Rail Agency of SA CEO Lucky Montana, and the minibus taxi industry.

A count down to the inaugural Bokone Bophirima Maize Triangle Challenge

With less than a week left before staging of the much awaited Bokone Bophirima Maize Triangle Challenge, the Provincial Government says it is bracing itself for an influx of about 20 000 soccer fans for Saturday’s soccer tournament, which has attracted huge interest from not only around Bokone Bophirima, Free State and Mpumalanga Provinces, but from the neighbouring Botswana as well. 

Bokone Bophirima Maize Triangle Challenge is a one-day soccer tournament which the Provincial Government initiated as part of the bigger vision to rebrand, reposition and renew the province.

This tournament will be hosted at Moruleng Stadium on the 11th of July 2015.

It is anticipated that Bokone Bophirima Maize Triangle Challenge will not just be a preeminent soccer event of its kind, but an activity that will boost the development of Small Medium Micro Enterprise.

“To ensure that local SMMEs participate and benefit from the hosting of this tournament, the Local Organising Committee has invited all SMMEs to attend a briefing and registration session that is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday this week”, explained Brian Setswambung, the Acting Provincial Spokesperson, who urged vendors who wish to market and sell their products during the tournament to attend this important session.

The briefing sessions will be held at Moruleng Stadium, from 09h00 until 13h00 during these two days.

MTN’s CEO resigns


JOHANNESBURG – MTN has announced the resignation of CEO Ahmad Farroukh, the mobile phone service provider said on Monday.

Farroukh, who took up the post last year, will leave the company by the end of the month, MTN Group CEO Sifiso Dabengwa said in a statement circulated to the company’s staff.

“This was a difficult decision to take for Ahmad, but unavoidable due to personal and family reasons,” said Dabengwa.

Alberton crash leaves eleven injured


Eleven people were injured following an accident on the R554 Swartkoppies Road in Kibler Park, Alberton this morning.

Netcare 911 paramedics and other services arrived at the scene and found that two motor vehicle and a light utility vehicle was involved in a crash. The light utility vehicle left the roadway and drove down and embankment where it came to a standstill.

Upon assessment of the occupants, paramedics found that one person was in a critical condition, eight people sustained serious injuries and two people sustained minor to moderate injuries.

The injured patients were treated at the scene and transported to hospital for further medical care.

Exact detail surrounding the cause of the crash and preceding events will remain the subject of a police investigation.

Portfolio committee to conduct oversight visit in Marikana


The Portfolio Committee on Local Government and Human Settlements will be conducting an oversight visit at the Marikana Housing Projects on Friday.

The oversight will commence with a briefing session at the Rustenburg Local Municipality – Mayoral’s Boardroom at 09h00 and will proceed to the Marikana Housing Projects thereafter.

As part of its constitutional mandate, the Committee will conduct oversight on the Department of Local Government and Human Settlements based on the pronouncement made on the department’s annual performance plans for 2015/16 to build housing units at Marikana.
