Situation calm after ‘unrest’ in Matloding

Community removes trees

BY OBAKENG MAJE

The North West Education and Sport Development, MEC Maphefo Matsemela came to the rescue of the Matloding community after learners have been away from school for a period of 35 days.

This peaceful resolution follows a series of meetings held between the officials of the department and the community which failed to yield positive results.

Since May 2015, the Matloding community embarked on a massive strike to demand a High school in their area. They prevented learners from going to school, burned local clinic, barricaded all roads within the village and destroyed a number of public properties in their area.

They complained about their children whom they alleged were ill-treated and beaten by other learners at Marumuloa Middle School and Mothibinyane Secondary School in Tshidilamolomo Village, which is 12 kilometres away from their area.

MEC Matsemela met with the community at a packed community hall of Matloding, which was attended by hundreds of people from the area. Tension was written on the wall when the meeting started and all speakers from the community spoke in one language to say,” We are very concerned about our children who are sitting at home and not attending school. We want the department to help us in taking them back to school in Logageng Village not in Tshidilamolomo”.

In responding to the concerns of the community MEC Matsemela assured them that, this is a government which listens to the people and surely it will assist them.

“As of tomorrow we are going to take learners to Logageng according to the demands made by parents. We are also going to establish a task team, which will come up with a permanent solution to the problem. The task team should report back to the community in October about progress registered. The department will in the meantime implement the recovery plan so that the learners can catch up for the lost time in class”, said MEC Matsemela.

The community agreed to release children tomorrow to go back to school and thanked the department for listening to their concerns. MEC Matsemela closed the meeting by requesting the community to join her in removing stones and trees used to blockade the roads.

Schweizer Reneke women receive title deeds for their houses

PIC 1. Receiving thier title deeds Thethane Ntshelo 81 years and Matshekiso Julie 56 years with MEC Maine (Middle)with MEC for Social Development Fenny Gaolaolwe

BY OBAKENG MAJE

Celebrations for Women’s month in August came a bit early for four elderly women in Ipelegeng township near Schweizer Reneke in Mamusa local municipality, after they received title deeds for their houses last week.

The handing over of these title deeds also coincided with the provincial government’ service delivery programme, Setsokotsane which is intended to bring government services closer to communities throughout the Province.

One of the recipients, Thethane Ntshilo (81), a pensioner,  widower and mother of seven, had been staying in a one room dilapidated house, said getting a title deed meant that her children ‘’will at least a place to call their own long after I am gone’’.  We are very happy to finally receive these title deeds, finally I know for sure that the house I live in is mine. I would like to thank the Department for giving me a house,” said Thethane.

Matshekiso Julie (56), a mother of six, who had been staying in a two roomed house, shared Thethane’s sentiments. “Nothing beats the feeling of finally owning a decent house that is registered in your name. I will now be able to continue with my life knowing that my children will never be destitute again because they now have a place to call home”, said Julie.

MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements, Collen Maine said by issuing out title deeds, the Department ensures that beneficiaries are able to raise their families where these is security and comfort and have a sense of ownership.

Meanwhile, MEC Maine also met with members of the community to afford them an opportunity to raise their concerns about general service delivery in the area. Most of the issued that were raised by the community ranged from illegal occupation of houses, houses that have structural defects and people who are unduly prioritised on the housing beneficiary list.

MEC Maine warned that cases of government officials who own RDP houses will be dealt with. He also warned the community against renting out their house for business purposes. “We will send out officials to register beneficiaries and this will purely be done to ensure that only those who are eligible, can benefit. In the meantime, we urge the community to be patient with us.  We have heard all your problems and we will be attending to them in due time, do not be afraid to report illegal occupation of houses, we need to stamp out corruption. We have a programme deal with rectifications and we will be sending a team to deal with all the problems that you are facing’’, he further stated.

BY OBAKENG MAJE
The North West Education and Sport Development Department celebrated the Youth Month by empowering the Grade 9, 10 and 11 Representative Council Leaders on becoming a responsible leader through an intensive summit held on Saturday, 25 July 2015 at Vryburg.

Non-negotiables for learners were at centre stage which highlighted that learners should be in class at all times and that they must use all the available support materials provided such as textbooks.

North West Education and Sport Development spokesperson Elias Malindi said “The key objectives of the summit were to provide leaders of learners a platform to raise challenges they face in their different schools, to have clear implementable resolutions which are SMART(Simple Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time bound) and get learners in the province to commit to a vision of turning our schools into crime and violence free institutions.”

Malindi said the department in empowering the student leadership went out of its way to organise experts from different fields and several resolutions were adopted which included: To focus on increasing basic safety conditions in schools, decreasing incidents of violence and crime through  prevention, intervention support and advocacy.

“A need to empower RCL’s as an important channel of liaison between teachers, learners, parents, community and organisations was also recognised at the summit,” he said.

Commitments made by the RCL’s  are to promote schools as smoke free zones, making schools drug and weapon free and ensuring crime and violent incidents do not go unreported.

He said the key challenges facing learners noted at the summit were corporal punishment, bullying, food security, teenage pregnancies and road accidents whilst travelling to areas of learning.

Amongst the dignitaries who motivated the learners was billionare Thapelo Tshepe who hails from Bethanie Village in the North West. He became a millionaire at age of 21 and he told learners that your background does not determine your destiny, it is possible to achieve anything if you are determined.

The summit saw key partnerships being formed between the Department of Education and Sports Development, SAPS, Office of the Premier, municipalities, NPA, Lovelife and the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development.

“It was agreed that the RCL committee will hold briefing meeting with all the other learners to inform them about the resolutions as a way of cascading information to all the learners in the province,” concludes Malindi.

Public servants applauded for sound implementation of Setsokotsane in Dr RSM district

DSC_6334

Bloemhof – The successful implementation of service delivery driven Setsokotsane programme in Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District is a profound affirmation of the Province’s radical pursuit of the National Development Plan goals. This was said today, Tuesday 28 July 2015, by Premier of Bokone Bophirima Supra Obakeng Ramoeletsi Mahumapelo while addressing more than three thousands government employees from Departments and Municipalities within Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality.

Held at Bloemhof in Lekwa-Teemane Local Municipality, the purpose of the meeting was to reflect on the implementation of Setsokotsane programme which lasted for the past two months in this District.

Reiterating the Province’s quest for improved and sustainable livelihoods, Premier Mahumapelo urged government employees to embrace Setsokotsane as a necessary action oriented approach that brings all service delivery spheres together, this in pursuit of a prosperous society.

“We have a responsibility to unambiguously implement the objectives of the National Development Plan according to our environment and circumstances, and Setsokotsane has so far been acclaimed as one of the most progressive approach to achieving this task,” said Premier Mahumapelo.

Premier Mahumapelo encouraged government employees to objectively appreciate the reality that by implementing the principles of Setsokotsane, they are shaping and making a history from which positive things will be derived and enjoyed by the future generation. Moreover, Mahumapelo said Setsokotsane must be viewed as an integral approach to realising the vision to rebrand, reposition and renew the Province of Bokone Bophirima.

“As we will be implementing Setsokotsane in Dr Kenneth Kaunda District for the next two months, we move with the necessary drive and stimulation to change people’s lives, drawing from the experience and lessons learnt from Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District. The leadership of this Province is grateful for your dedication and demonstrated will to make a difference in the lives of the people of Bokone Bophirima,” said Premier Mahumapelo who also expressed the leadership’s expectation that the District will continue to deliver services in the context of Setsokotsane.

In line with the already adopted approach to implementing Setsokotsane this financial year, the focus will be on one District for two months, during which period each local municipality will be targeted for Setsokotsane service delivery activities.

The focus from August to September will be Dr Kenneth Kaunda District, followed by Ngaka Modiri Molema District in October and November, before heading to Bojanala Platinum District.

The event was held at Bloemhof Community Hall in Lekwa Teemane municipality on Tuesday.

Mahumapelo said the employees play a critical part to make sure the lives of the people are changed.

“We need to put the people of the province first before anything else. Our fifth administration will make sure that the workers are integral part of the administration.

“We have come up with an approach which will cease us to turn things around. We came up with rebranding, repositioning and renewal. We need to make sure that the province become progressive, have vision and change the mediocrity to become something else,” Mahumapelo said.

He also said the province came up with strategic anchor principles to increase the province’s economy.

“Our key strategic aspects are Agriculture, Culture and Tourism (ACT) because as long as human beings consume something to survive, we will always benefit. The province is duped as agricultural beacon. We need to become the best in the province in agricultural side,” he said.

The premier also encouraged the seniors officials to treat junior staff with respect. He said reconciliation and healing must start at public services.

“We will encourage the senior officials to treat their junior staff with respect because if your staff is unhappy, that will hinder the production. Remember that we here to create the future history. There are junior staff that have potential, then those must be capacitated,” he said.

Mahumapelo said the public officials need to pull together.

“Just know that in any aspect, there must be differences so that dynamism occurs. We do not have to be threatened by our junior staff. If we have differences, we need reciprocation where politicians work together with administration,” Mahumapelo concludes.
