Freeways not for pedestrains: Police

mshow.jpg

Pretoria – Tshwane metro police have arrested 32 pedestrians found walking on freeways across the city, spokesman senior superintendent Isaac Mahamba said on Saturday.

“We have identified that pedestrians are involved in several accidents which happen on our roads. The 32 we have arrested will be charged for being a source of danger on the freeways,” he said.

Mahamba said the police had also arrested two people for drinking and driving.

Four drivers had been nabbed for speeding since Easter holidays began.

He said there had been no major accidents across the city so far.

Mahamba said the Tshwane metro police was deploying more than 50 police officers per shift to monitor the roads.

“That has been working wonders for us. Those officers are not static, they are moving across the city and ensuring law enforcement,” he said.

“Whenever they suspect a vehicle of being unroadworthy, they stop it and do the checks. We would like to urge motorists to be patient and abide by rules of the road. Long distance drivers must remember to take breaks at intervals to avoid fatigue.”

On Thursday, Tshwane mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa joined hundreds of police officers inspecting traffic on the N1 heading to Limpopo.

Pastors call for prayers for families of Garissa massacre victims

Mahikeng Ministers Fellowship has called on believers assembling for Good Friday and Passover celebrations to remember families of the 147 students killed, those injured during the Garissa University massacre and the Kenyan nation in their prayers.

“We wish to condemn in the strongest terms possible the henious act of terrorism and extremism that have cast a dark cloud over Kenya,” Chairperson of MMF(an interdenominational pastors fellowship),Apostle Zandisile Reginald Mpame said.

In conveying condolences to the families of those killed and wishing  scores of those injured a speedy recovery, Apostle Mpame said that those behind atrocities represent evil which has no place in civilised societies.

“In remembering a nation that is in mourning,we should denounce sectarian violence, hatred and rededicate ourselves to pray for peace across the continent, intercede for the lost, the hopeless and the helpless,”Mpame highlighted.

Kenyan authorities said that though around 500 to 815 students have been accounted, hundreds remain missing in the aftermath of the seige during which four attackers were killed.

They have identified a possible mastermind of the attack as Mohammed Mohamud also known by the names Dulyadin and Gamadhere.

Mohamud who is alleged to lead Al Queda-linked terror group Al-Shabaab’s cross-border raids into Kenya was a teacher at an Islamic religious school, or madrassa.

He had claimed responsibility for a bus attack in Makka, Kenya, in November that killed 28 people.A $220,000 bounty has been posted for him.

Kenyan police statistics reportedly that 312 people have been killed in Al-Shabaab attacks in Kenya from 2012 to 2014. Thirty-eight people were killed and 149 wounded in Garissa in the same period.

Six people died in different incidents on the eve of Easter Friday on the roads of Bokone Bophirima.

In the early hours of Thursday, driver of a sedan lost control and vehicle overturned just 10 km from Lichtenburg to Coligny. The driver died on the scene and passenger survived with serious injuries.

In Klerksdorp at around 19H55, a 32-year-old cyclist was hit by a red Polo vivo and died on the scene.

A case of drunken driving and culpable homicide was opened after a bakie collided head on with a taxi and passenger of the bakie died on the scene.

Traffic Authorities reports that the driver of the bakie was driving recklessly as he was overtaking while there was an oncoming traffic.

In the early hours of today, a Taxi that was traveling from Krugersdorp got a puncture and a driver lost control just few kilometers outside Delareyville. One passenger died at the scene of the accident and at a later stage two passenger were reported dead at the hospital. About 8 people are seriously injured and four with slight injuries, all admitted at hospitals.

Community Safety and Transport Management MEC Gaoage Molapisi send his message of condolences to the bereaved families and said that the Provincial Government is wounded by the deaths of people on the roads.

“We are concerned and seriously wounded by the rate in which we are losing our people’s lives on the roads especially at this time of the year.

It is very sad to receive the news that your loved one is dead when you are still excited and preparing for warm welcome.

We therefore send our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wish speedy recovery to those admitted in different hospitals,” said Molapisi.

The departmental MEC further condemned reckless and drunken driving and said those found on the wrong side of the law would be locked behind bars.

“There are people who drive under the influence of alcohol and they are the ones causing us death and pains unnecessarily, the drive recklessly, speeding and overtaking while it is not safe to do so.

These are people who belong behind the cells and we will definitely ensure that they are locked up.” warned Molapaisi.

Due to the increase of traffic levels on the roads this Easter, the department has strengthened its operations and increased visibility.

Senior Managers of the Department are been deployed on the roads across the province to monitor the flow of traffic and further ensures that Traffic Authorities are visible enough on the roads.

“Our traffic officers must no longer hide behind the trees and trap motorists, but they must be on the road and be visible,” said MEC.

Last year at this time, the province had already recorded 7 fatalities, 9 seriously injured in five crashes.

“This is a slight decrease, because today we have at least recorded six fatalities and we humbly request our people to obey the road rules. We already have enough fatalities,” concluded Molapisi.

North West FM presenter tackles real issues

Kupsi

By Lesedi Setlhodi

You hear the name Mokopi Molebatsi and you wonder no more who this person could be as she is with us in our homes, cars and offices weekdays from 9am – 12pm with her much enthralling show Bothakga on North West FM.

She also has a show on Sundays called The YesterYears and surely does take one back and has you reminiscing.

Mokopi is warmly known to her listeners as Mkp. She has a smoky voice and is habitually complimented by her listeners who engage with her for being bold enough to talk about and bring to surface things that happen in our daily lives, yet we do not want to talk about openly.

Mkp’s listeners also appreciate the advice she gives them and the music that she plays definitely lives up to the tag-line “Home of the best music” set by the station.

Astrology pronounces that Pisces women are creative, emotional, and sensitive and have a streak of mysteriousness in them and these traits do cover how Mkp is as a human being.

It further says that they (Pisces women) have a deep sight in human nature which amongst others may explain Mkp’s interest in pursuing studies about the human psychology.

Having to let her choose the virtual couch she sits on as Taung Daily News (TDN) catches up with her, she chooses the blue one without any hesitancy…

You have mentioned that you have mad love for radio; before you got to North West FM you were at Motsweding FM, could you briefly tell us how this love brewed?

I usually tell people that I fell in love with radio when I was still a foetus but I got to work in a studio in 2002 at Radio PUK (campus radio at North West University, Potchefstroom). In 2004 after I graduated I went to work at a community radio station called Radio Teemaneng in Kimberley. On the 4th November 2005, I started working at Motsweding FM and in 2012 I moved to North West FM.

How do you prepare for your shows?

Firstly I organize my playlist that consist of music that speaks to the heart and soul; to the listeners themselves and also has a message they can take from the songs.
I then make certain that there is always something I bring to the table that will inspire and move the listeners. Current affairs and getting listener’s views and suggestions is always part of the package of the shows I do.

What challenges have you come across in the radio industry?

The challenges that I came across were those ones experienced by other radio personalities like not getting any feedback after sending demo tapes. Another challenge has to do with working with managers who are not considerate.

Besides being on the airwaves, what else does Mkp do?

Apart from radio I work with a variety of women’s organizations that seek to empower us as women. I play a major role in inspiring the youth and women. I also do school visits by motivating children to take their education seriously and make something of themselves.

For someone who claims to be shy and an introvert Mkp surely seems to bite the bullet when it comes to engaging with her listeners and the community at large. Are there any projects that you are part of?

I have an annual event called Mokopi Molebatsi Games in Itsoseng that takes place in December. The event is open to a variety of games and it is aimed at helping children keep busy and not roam the streets while schools are closed.

Is Mkp married?

*chuckles* I’m not married and I don’t have kids. Those I’ll get to after completing my Psychology studies; I am however someone’s partner though.

You regard books as your “best buddies”, kindly share with us which book you are currently reading.

I’m currently reading “Nothing left to steal: Jailed for telling the truth” by Mzilikazi Wa Afrika. The book reveals the details behind Sunday Times journalist Mzilikazi wa Afrika’s exposure to the R1.7 billion lease scandal involving Bheki Cele and Roux Shabangu.

Fast cars seem to be your kind of thing, which car would you like to drive or own?

Hahahahahaa! My wish is to see myself driving a Range Rover Evoque.

Keyshia Cole’song “I should have cheated”, most of the time when you play it you are filled with amusement…is there something more to this song we don’t know about?

*chuckles* Truly speaking, I love the lyrics of the song. The way the singer explains how she is accused of cheating by her partner whereas she is the one being cheated on…these are the things that happen in life.

To engage with Mkp one could like her Facebook page Mokopi MKP Molebatsi or follow her on twitter @228mkp
