Magogong family crestfallen after murder

THE family of Jonker in Magogong village, near Taung is crestfallen after their son was killed by unknown men.

The atrocity took place on Saturday at Majaneng village, near Taung.

Segametsi Jonker(50) said her sister’s son who was mental ill, left the house on Friday, but they do not know how he ended in Majaneng.

“Sibongile was not mentally-fit and left the house on Friday, but he couldn’t say where he was going. We are very disturbed by the incident and hope the suspects will be apprehended soon” Segametsi Jonker said.

North West police said a 35 year-old man was allegedly attacked by four unknown men who hit him with a spade.

“We can confirm that the incident took place on Friday where a 35 year-old man was allegedly attacked and killed by four unknown men. It is alleged that the men were involved in a fight and four men attacked the victim with a spade” colonel Emelda Setlhako said.

Setlhako said the victim (Sibongile Jonker) was confirmed dead by paramedics after he suffered terrible injuries on his head.

She said no one was arrested yet and asked anyone with information that could lead to any arrest, to come forward.

The Jonker family, who stays in a four roomed RDP house, said they do not have any money to bury their loved one.

“We’re very depressed because we do not have any money to bury him. Any samaritan who could help, please come forward with any possible help, so that our son could be buried with dignity” Segametsi said.

Sibongile Jonker, who resides in Magogong village, Taung will be buried on Saturday.

North West political stalwart statue to be unveiled

Vryburg- A new statue of a struggle stalwart, Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati will be unveiled in Vryburg to celebrate the life of a living activist ‘Mama Ruta Mompati’ as she is affectionately known.

Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District came up with this plan in honoring Mompati who is been described as one of the most towering figures in political history.

“By putting Mama Ruta Segomotsi Mompati statue,we giving her an eternal home in our district. The statue celebrates the incredibly special contribution she made not only in North West, but South Africa at large” one of officials who did not want to be named said.

Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati was very grateful after hearing that her statue is ready to be unveiled.

Mama Ruta who was very emotional while talking to us, said she feels honoured and she said all wouldn’t be possible without her fellow comrades who contributed immensely in fighting for democracy.

“I am humble and highly-appreciates to be honored in this manner, however all wouldn’t be achieved without other struggling stalwarts who fought tirelessly to make sure we are where we are today” Mompati said.

A 89 year-old stalwart also encouraged the youth of today to know their history as it carries historical information.

“I would like to encourage our youth to make sure they know their history and must go to school. Education is the key, and they must remember they are the future of tomorrow” she said.

The statue of ‘Mama Ruta’ is built just in front of Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati’s offices.

The statue will be unveiled on Friday to honour the living legend of struggle, Mama Ruta Mompati.

Who is Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati?

Vryburg- Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati was born in Tlapeng Village, few kilometres from Ganyesa in Kagisano-Molopo area within the district of Bophirima, now called Dr Ruth Mompati District Municipality after it (the district) being named after her. Born on the 14 September  1925, she grew up in a thoroughly rural environment. Between 1933 and 1940 she attended Vryburg United Primary Schools, where she completed Standard six (6). Two years later, she continued her schooling at Tigerkloof Institution of Education where she received her Native Lower Primary Certificate. In 1944 she started her teaching career at the age of nineteen in Dithakwaneng Primary School near Vryburg.

She got married in 1952 and lost her job due to apartheid laws regulated that black female teachers were not supposed to get married. Immediately after, she moved to Johannesburg and became an active member of the ANC Orlando branch. In the same year, she studied short-hand typing.

In 1953 she was employed by Mandela and Tambo Attorneys as a short-hand typist. She became a member of the National Executive Committee of the ANC Women’s League and become one of the founder members of the Federation of South African  Women the following year. She was one of the organisers and leaders of the Anti Pass Law march in Pretoria on the 9th August 1956.

In 1962, she left the country for Military training with MKhondo We Sizwe in the then Soviet Union.  She could not return to the Country to do her underground work because her colleague had given evidence against the ANC leadership. She had to become the full-time cadre of the underground movement in exile.

In 1966 she was elected to the National Executive Committee and during the same year she was transferred to the ANC‘s office in Zambia, but continued between Tanzania and Zambia during the course of her work in the ANC President’s office. In 1966, she was sent to Germany by the movement as the ANC Women’s League secretary to represent the Federation of South African Women in its secretariat.

In 1990, she was chosen to be part of the ANC delegation that negotiated the peaceful transition with the government at Groote Schuur. In 1994 she was elected to the National Assembly of the Republic of South Africa and served as a Member of Parliment from 1994-1996 before she seconded to become an Ambassador to Switzerland until 2000.

In 1996, Mama Ruth was awarded an Honorary Masters Degree in Education by the University of the North West in Mahikeng. The scholarship was named after her by Huston-Tillotson University, in Austin, Texas, USA. In 1998, the Medical University of South Africa awarded her an Honorary Doctorate. She has been the Mayor of Naledi Local Municipality from June 2000 until May 2010. In consolidating the vision of the society and the country she liberated, this true activist and daughter of the soil continues to serve community in various capacities. She serves on many Boards, including being Chairperson of the Swiss-South Africa Corporative Initiative Trust.

One person died, six admitted in hospital in Taung crash

TAUNG- North West police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a Quantum minibus taxi allegedly knocked down a pedestrian on Friday.

The accident took place on Friday at Morokweng village, near Taung and six people were taken to Taung hospital for medical attention.

“It is alleged that a 35 year-old driver lost control of the minibus taxi and plunged on a 38-year-old pedestrian who was walking along the road” colonel Emelda Setlhako said.

Setlhako said the pedestrian was certified dead on the scene by paramedics and a culpable homicide case was registered at Taung police station.

Truck collision leaves three injured

A collision between two trucks and light motor vehicle this morning(07 April 2015) the R54 20km outside of Potchefstroom has left three people injured.

ER24 paramedics arrived on scene and found the road blocked by heavy traffic. A large truck lay on its side blocking the entire road, its contents of alcohol spread across the scene. A second truck lay some distance away in the field while the light motor vehicle had stopped on the side of the road.

“On assessment, paramedics found that both truck drivers as well as the driver of the light motor vehicle had sustained minor injuries in the collision” ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said.

Meiring said paramedics treated the patients for their injuries and thereafter transported them to Mediclinic Potchefstroom for further observations.

The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.

Stars mourn Henyekane passing


Free State Stars have offered their condolences following the death of striker Richard Henyekane in a car accident.

Henyekane, 31, passed away in the early hours of this morning.

Stars released a statement, which said: “Free State Stars hereby expresses its heartfelt condolences on the passing away of star striker Richard Henyekane in the early hours of this morning.

“Henyekane was travelling with four other passengers when they were involved in a tragic motor vehicle accident.

“He was, unfortunately the only one to lose his life in this incident.

“We wish to say to the Henyekane family that they must know that we are with them at all times, and trust that they will put all their sorrows in the hands of God the Almighty in this hard period.

“To the Stars family of fans, sponsors, supporters and others we believe that this is a period in which you will remain steadfast in the praying for Henyekane’s teammates as they come to terms with this sad moment.

“South African football has lost yet another one of our promising players… go well ’Kimberley Express’”.

The former Bafana Bafana international earned nine caps, and also represented Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows.

His brother Joseph Henyekane passed away in December last year at the age of 30, having also been on the books of Arrows, as well as Mpumalanga Black Aces and Bidvest Wits.

Villiers bus accident leaves three dead three injured

Three people have tragically died while three were injured, two critically so, after a bus and two cars collided on the N3 in Villiers about twenty kilometres from the Wilge plaza  on the south bound.  Exact detail to the cause of the accident and preceding events will remain a subject for police investigation and comment.

“Netcare 911 paramedics and the provincial services arrived at the scene and found the crumpled remains of the car trapped under the bus with some of the occupants still trapped in the wreckage, a second vehicle was also involved in the accident but the occupants was uninjured. After triaging emergency services found that two people sustained critical injuries while one escaped with minor injuries. What appears to be two adults and a child that had died is still trapped in the wreckage under the bus and emergency workers are fervently working to extricate them” Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

Further updates will follow as soon as the scene has been cleared. One lane on the south bound has been close and traffic on the north bound is traveling very slowly.

Ten-year-old boy saved from the surf


Durban – A ten-year-old boy had a close shave after a strong rip current swept him out beyond the shore break while swimming near Blythedale on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast on Sunday.

The floundering boy was saved by other holidaymakers who launched a canoe and pulled him to shore.

Officials blame each other for clinic’s missing chairs

White River – The Mpumalanga department of health and the Mbombela local municipality have blamed each other for missing chairs that have left patients with sore feet at a local clinic.

Health spokesperson Dumisane Malamule said the chairs at the White River Clinic were removed by municipal officials three months ago.

NPA confirms arrest of cop killer suspect


Durban – The National Prosecuting Authority confirmed on Monday that a team of police officers had travelled to KwaZulu-Natal to arrest a suspect linked to the slaying of policemen last week.

This came as top police brass closed ranks, with spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza insisting that reports of any arrest were patently false.
