The 2015 Sasol League season, which is women’s premier football league in South Africa, is in full swing as provinces kicked-off their fixtures early this month.
The league is played provincially in all nine provinces and comprises of 144 teams (16 teams per province) with a one stream format of 16, or a two stream with eight teams each. The two stream format was adopted to curb the travelling challenges that might face teams due to the geographical spread of the teams and long travel distances. Matches are scheduled for Saturday or Sunday afternoons in all provinces.
Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Western Cape got their season underway a week ago, while Northern Cape, Free State, Eastern Cape and North West kicked-off this past weekend. KwaZulu-Natal is expected to kick-off next month.
“All the provinces have done their teams registrations and most of them got their season underway two weeks ago. We expect all Provinces to be in full swing by the end of May,” said SAFA Competitions Director, Mr. Balebetse Monnakgotla.
2015 marks the 7th season of the Sasol sponsored Women’s League since the inception of the Sasol sponsorship in support of women’s football came into effect in 2009.
The league has played an integral role as a feeder to the National teams, which has been the main objective, in particular the senior side Banyana Banyana. This is evident in the number of players in the current Banyana Banyana squad who hone their skills for clubs in the Sasol League.
The League season culminates in the National Championships which is to crown the national champions. This week-long football festival will be held towards the end of the year, proudly hosted by SAFA Gert Sibande in Secunda, the home of Sasol in Mpumalanga.
“We took it upon ourselves to empower women through football, by committing to assist SAFA in addressing the issue of developing the women’s game in the country. The league has in the past opened doors for women footballers, affording them opportunities to play overseas, while a number of the players have been offered study bursaries by institutions of higher learning to further their studies and continue their footballing career”, said Sasol Sponsorship Specialist, Dumisani Mbokane.
In conclusion, Mbokane added “another objective has been to create an opportunity for talented players to be recognised by the senior national team coaches, thus this has created a platform for the coaches to asses and track the performance of players through the road shows that are scheduled across the country and the weekly Sasol League matches.”
