NORTH West province embarked on a Media Familiarization Tour in a bit to make sure that international and local journalists get indebt information on the province as a beacon in tourism industry.
The itinerary tour kick-started at The Vredefort Dome (Crater) which is currently the largest and one of the oldest known meteor impact sites in the world.
It is South Africa’s seventh World Heritage Site and this is largely due to the research scientist from Wits University, including Dr. Rodger Hart.
Despite the importance of impact sites to the planet’s history, geological activity on the Earth’s surface has led to the disappearance of evidence from most of them, and Vredefort is the only example to provide a full geological profile of an astrobleme below the crater floor.
The reporters were ferried to various destinations including Taung Skull Heritage Site, Dinkgwaneng Heritage Site and Thomeng Waterfall which is affectionately known as Small Heaven.
The department of Tourism also made it possible that the historical evidence comes forth as they took the media to Mahikeng where is a home of Barolong Bo-rra Tshidi.
Paramount chief, Kgosi Jeffrey Montshiwa shared his information as he took media personnels down the memory lane.
North West Tourism MEC Desbo Mohono said they want to turn the province as a gateway for tourists as the province is situated between boarders.
“We want to see a dynamic, sustainable, diversified and vibrant tourism industry in the North West province. Most heritage sites in the province are 100% government-owned” Mohono said.
Mohono said the province is planning to position heritage as a strategic thrust in expanding the Tourism Portfolio.
“I am glad to say the Mahikeng Airport is sound and ready. We will experience our first flight that will take off on the 27 March 2015. So we tried to minimize the distance between the O.R. Tambo International Airport and other provinces to allow our tourists to be ferried into the province without any hassle” she outlines.
The North West province has highlighted Culture, Tourism and Agriculture as key points to grow the economy of the province.
“The province is mainly dominated by rural areas, so it will be very imperative to note that most heritage sites are what we call rural heritage sites surrounded by deep cultural diversity” Mohono explains.
According to Mohono, her department in conjunction with Public Works in the province is planning to upgrade some of heritage sites like Letlamoreng Dam, Taung Skull Heritage Site and Dingwaneng Heritage Site where some of the roads are inaccessible in those sites.
