PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma has admitted that the majority of Mzansi’s people still lived in abject poverty.
Delivering the party’s traditional annual 8 January statement, Zuma painted a picture that was contrary to his usual “good story to tell” about the first 20 years of democracy.
“We must not be blind to thereality that many of our people still live in abject poverty and have littleaccess to government services,” said Zuma in his address to an almost- packed Cape Town stadium.
“We must continue to improve their lives.”
Zuma said people were living in poverty because of a lack of jobs, and committed the ruling party to working hard to achieve radical economic transformation.
He said the economy was beingderacialised, and the ANC was taking steps to enhance its developmental role and create an environment more conducive to economic transformation.
