N West man held for kidnap, rape

Taung – A man was arrested in North West on Thursday for his alleged role in the murder of a 41-year old man and rape of a woman, police said.

Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said the 21-year-old was arrested in Buxton Village, about 6km from Taung.

The man’s alleged accomplice was killed in a confrontation with police in Taung’s Extension Six early on Thursday morning. The 24-year-old allegedly tried to stab police officers who had come to arrest him.

The two men allegedly kidnapped Ephraime Thejane, 41, and his female companion after hijacking them on Sunday. Thejane was taken from the car and shot dead.

The woman was taken to the nearby Dryharts area where the two men allegedly raped her.

Thejane’s body was found in a stream in Matolong village on Tuesday.

The 21-year old is expected to appear in court soon on charges of hijacking, kidnaping, murder, and rape.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate had been called to investigate the 24-year old’s death, Mokgwabone said.

We still have some work to do – Mashaba

Bafana Bafana returned home to a hero’s welcome at the OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday, 20 November with enthusiastic fans singing and dancing as they welcomed the national team back home.

The South Africans were in Nigeria for the last qualifier of the CAF Orange Africa Cup of Nations Equatorial Guinea 2015 tournament.

Bafana Bafana played to a 2-2 draw with the Super Eagles on Wednesday, 19 November in Uyo, Nigeria.

Head coach Shakes Mashaba said he was proud of his charges but at the same time disappointed that they did not finish off Nigeria when they had a chance to do so.

With history on the side of the hosts many had hope it was going to be a one way traffic in favour of Nigeria as has been case over the years – but the brave and relatively young South Africans took the game to Nigeria and raced to a 2-0 lead with goals from Tokelo Rantie.

The silence in the newly-built Akwa Ibom Stadium was deafening as the local fans faced the prospect of the African champion unable to defend their crown won in South Africa last year.

But Nigeria clawed their way back after South Africa lost Reneilwe Letsholonyane for his second bookable offence early in the second half. The Super Eagles scored two goals to level the tie.

“Everybody wants the points and it would have been good if we had won this game with a good number of points at the top of the group. But unfortunately we didn’t do that, we lost the game in the last five minutes – referee’s optional time, which is what worries me, we need to go back and work on it. But our boys did very well, this Nigeria team is a very good side as you saw by their tactical awareness and their match intelligence was from the top drawer, but our boys stood firm,” said Mashaba.

“The red card also disorganised us. You could have seen in the second half that we lost shape. We found ourselves crowding the goal area, though it helped at times but we should have taken the game to them after the red card because we had two breaks and should have scored at least one. Anyway that is how the game goes. We played strong teams in this group, so it says the boys are ready for Equatorial Guinea.”

The Bafana Bafana mentor said the players gave a good account of themselves throughout the entire campaign even they were not expected to.

“When we started the qualifiers there was no mandate but we were asked to build a new side. In life, in whatever you do, you want to succeed. Mandate or no mandate, I would not like to see us building a good side and losing all the games. We have surpassed ourselves (all South Africans) to be where we are today because when it was announced that there is no mandate for AFCON 2015, everyone thought we were going to relax,” added Mashaba.

“I must compliment the boys, they played above themselves. I would not want to write a negative legacy for myself. If we didn’t have to win games then our successors would have no pressure and no targets. So it was important for us to get here for future generations to know what South African football is all about. Everybody wants to leave a mark and I am no different. I must also thank the South African Football Association for all the support given to the team.”

Reeva’s mom ready to launch book

578b1c3df44149aa940baa3c26fb2f9a

Johannesburg – June Steenkamp is launching her book Reeva – A Mother’s Story in Port Elizabeth this week, the SABC reported on Thursday.

In an interview with the broadcaster, Steenkamp said she was not concerned about the outcome of the appeal process undertaken by ParalympianOscar Pistorius, as it would not bring her daughter Reeva back nor bring the family closure.

“It is never going to happen. One is a fool if you think you can get over this. We will never get over this, we will never get closure. What is closure?” she said.

“Only if she could walk through the door would I have closure, if a miracle could happen and she could come back into our lives. We are devastated, my husband and I. She was everything to us.”

The launch of her book takes place in the same week Pistorius’s lawyers filed papers opposing the State’s application to appeal against his culpable homicide conviction and sentence.

Pistorius was jailed for five years for the culpable homicide killing of his girlfriend, law graduate and model Reeva.

He shot her dead through the locked toilet door at his Pretoria home on 14 February last year.

Steenkamp said she planned to use the MONEY EARNED from international media interviews to set up a trust to open a shelter for abused women in the name of her daughter.

“When we have raised enough MONEY to build the shelter, and have some funds, I would like to help the people who are going through the same thing,” Steenkamp said.

“They may also not have MONEY like we when it happened to us. I got such love and help from everybody, so it is time to pay forward, and it will make me feel good.”

Disbanded Ngaka Modiri Molema District Council and suspended manager bites the dust

1.jpg
Mahikeng – The constitutional court has dismissed the application by disbanded council of Ngaka Modiri Molema and the suspended municipal manager Mokgele Mojaki, for leave to appeal the North West High Court decision, to enforce Section 139 (1)(c) as invoked by the North West Provincial Executive Council.

Ngaka Modiri Molema District councillors approached the highest court in the land after their bid to interdict the council dissolution and appointment of an administrator, was dismissed by the North West High Court in Mahikeng.

MEC for Local Government and Human Settlement Collen Maine has welcomed the court’s decision. “The decision by the highest court in the land proves that our intervention at the district municipality has always been lawful as we have never lost any application brought against us. This gives the Administrator full powers to run the municipality and also afford us space to prepare for the by-election next Wednesday” said Maine.

A week ago the suspended Municipal Manager Mokgele Mojaki’s application to have his suspension set aside was dismissed with cost by the Labour Court in Braamfontein – Johannesburg and the SAMWU in the municipality also lost application of an unlawful lockout against the municipality in the same court.

The Administrator Kumaran Nair said “Now that we have dealt with court series that were filed against us now we can focus on providing services to our communities and implement all project envisaged to bring long lasting solution to water shortage in the district.”

Under the tenure of Mokgele Mojaki and the disbanded council, the district municipality received successive disclaimer audit opinions with extensive qualifications under the Compliance and Predetermined Objectives components of the municipal audit. In addition the Auditor General has also extensively recorded repeat findings that will confirm that there were no remedial measures that were implemented.

The audit reports show that the aggregate unauthorized, irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure for 2011/12 and 2012/13 financial years amounted to approximately R1, 350 billion.

Amongst others, the council also failed to act on alleged maladministration, fraud and corruption; to provide support to the local municipalities in terms of section 88 of the Municipal Structures Act and failure by district to provide communities with basic services in particular water.
