Molapisi calls on taxi operators to observe 16 days of Activism

Bokone Bophirima Community Safety and Transport Management MEC Gaoage Molapisi appealed to taxi operators in the province to observe the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Children.

Speaking at the Zeerust Driver License Testing Centre (DLTC) when he addressed taxi owners who attended the Provincial Regulatory Entity (PRE) adjudication processes of applications on taxi operating permits, Molapisi said it is important for operators to join government on its objectives of ending abuse against women and children.

“It is good that we are moving away from an abusive behavior of taxi drivers which is gradually improving and we must march on in achieving our quest to an incident free taxi industry.

“This industry is commonly known for all the bad driving, bad attitude towards their customers and only profit orientated. Unfortunately, the most vulnerable people are women and children who needs our protection from some of the men who have created themselves to be monsters. We are duty bound to protect our beloved mothers, sisters and children. “I plead with you all the men who are here that you should be the best men and should commit that this will be a Holy 16 Days of Activism and incident free”.

The departmental MEC further appealed to public transport operators to comply with the road rules to avoid been on the wrong side of the law.

“Your ignorance and inconsiderate conduct causes us deaths’ and pain, now we all need to observe the rules and always make sure that our vehicles are road worthy as we transport our people to different destinations during this festive season,” he said.

About 35 taxi operational permits applications were adjudicated by the PRE in addressing the backlog of 2012 applications in the Lehurutshe area.

Molapisi proceeded with his consistent unannounced visits to police stations to assess the compliance and service delivery standards in the stations, which are been conducted through the Setsokotsane Programme.

At the two police stations visited today, Molapisi continuously encouraged the officers to attend attentively to cases of abuse on women and children reported and make proper investigations.

“We must attend to cases of abuse of women and children, perpetrators must be taught a lesson that they will never forget. Our actions and reactions to these cases must send a strong message to these monsters that abuse women and children and must never be tolerated, concluded Molapisi.

Johannesburg – In a dramatic twist, the ANC has disbanded its youth wing’s national task team (NTT) and reduced the ANCYL’s national elective conference to a policy conference.

The move came on the eve of the conference at the University of Johannesburg’s Soweto campus on Tuesday morning.

The decision means there will no longer be any elections when thousands of delegates from across the country converge in Soweto for the ANCYL’s 25th national conference. Instead, delegates will knuckle down to the arduous task of rebuilding the league, starting with deliberations on policy issues.

The North West Provincial Department of Water and Sanitation celebrates Enforcement Month

Mahikeng- The North West Provincial Department of Water and Sanitation will from Tuesday, 25- 28 November 2014, raid certain areas in the North West Province to compel industries across all sectors that are abstracting water illegally from the rivers and other water resources to stop their activities or face the might of the law.

Industries that are polluting the country’s rivers will also be visited.

The raids/visits will form part of the Focus Week to mark the Enforcement Month since the beginning of November 2014 to remind all South Africans about the importance of using water legally and sparingly. In terms of the National Water Act of 1998 all water users in South Africa whether for commercial or domestic use must be registered through their municipalities and industries and must be issued with water use licenses.

Provincial Head, North West Department of Water and Sanitation, Chadwick Lobakeng said ‘Enforcement Month marks an important period in the government calendar because of the scarcity of water in South Africa.

“The National Water Act forms part of the pillars of South Africa’s laws as it seeks to enforce good management of water and its conservation. The North West is amongst the driest provinces in terms of water scarcity and if we don’t manage and use our water sparingly, we might face the shortage of water in the near future.

“It is unacceptable that some individuals and industries use our scarce resource for personal benefit without applying for water use licenses”, Regional Head, Chadwick Lobakeng said.

He said that an increase in unlawful water use activities in the North West Province has an impact on the environment as well as negative socio economic factors, called for a need to bring about public awareness regarding compliance. Accelerated enforcement means effective and enforceable control measures against the unlawful water uses as a result of the detrimental impact they have on the environment.

Due to the constitutional obligations of the department, the Directorate: Regulation and Water use in the provincial office is responsible for ensuring that the constitutional mandate is met through different enforcement actions and to ensure compliance by transgressors who unlawfully use water from the province scarce water resources.

The Enforcement month activities will take place as follows:

Date: Tuesday, 25 November 2014
Time: 09h00
Area to be visited: Zendelings Post, Zeerust: Investigation of Illegal Water Use

Date: Friday, 28 November 2014
Time: 09h00
Area to be visited: Hartebeesfontein, Hekpoort, Magalies: To issue directive of notice of intention to cut off illegal water use.
