Career Exhibition an eye-opener to Taung students

By Obakeng Maje
Taung- Different professionals gathered under the same roof at Raipela primary school in Maphoitsile village, near Taung for Career Exhibition on Friday.

The Career Exhibition was designed to provide prospective students with necessary tools to succeed in professional tertiary education and beyond.

“The Career Exhibition has evolved to encompass a breadth of information to facilitate a successful, fulfilling and stress-free student experience.

“We target primary school students so that they can be able to choose subjects wisely and know what is needed in their prospective career now” Galaletsang Mothowaakae, who is a teacher at the school said.

Mothowaakae,44, said the students must understand what kind of subjects to embark on if they want to make it in their chosen career path.

All various career representatives were there including South African Police Service and Legal Aid.

Humbelani Mashau, who is a Town Planner at Greater Taung Local Municipality said the students will be able to find out more about graduating employment opportunities and which career path to choose from.

“Career exhibition offers you brand awareness, brand visibility and graduate recruitment about program sustainability. As a Town Planner, there will be more opportunities in the field, but discipline and determination is needed” Mashau said.

She said one need to be well-focused and choose subjects like Physical Science, Geography and Mathematics to become a Town Planner.

A grade 7 pupil, Gift Sibanda,14, said meeting with representatives from wide-range professions is breath-taking as this will help them to determine which universities and programs meet their needs.

“Meet with representatives from a wide-range of universities to determine which school and program best meets our needs as students. Gain insight and career advice from leading field specialists to better understand the expectations and roles of their contemplated professions was amazing” he said.

Another pupil from the school, Dipuo Phase,14, said being better equipped to make educated decisions regarding their futures through discussions, presentations and a wealth of information was great.

“Meet and share information with other prospective students and parents was good. Career Exhibition reduces the stress of the unknown by gaining an in-depth understanding of what university life entails; both in and out of the classroom.

“This will help students to explore the various options for extra-curricular activities provided by the Universities. As a student I’ve learnt that we can secure student loans if one if from previously disadvantage background too” she laments.

Raipela primary school was built by the late statesman Dr Nelson Mandela in the area and is one of the best primary schools across Dr Ruth Mompati.

Malema in more hot water

Johannesburg – Three charges are being investigated against EFF leader Julius Malema for a scuffle involving a security guard, Limpopo police said on Monday.

“Mr Malema is being investigated for the pointing of a firearm, common assault, and malicious damage to property,” police spokesperson Ronel Otto said.

Malema allegedly pointed a firearm at a security guard at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Sunday morning, during an argument when Malema and his bodyguards wanted to leave. They had been attending a music festival at the stadium.

“It is alleged Mr Malema and his bodyguards went to a gate which was not used as an exit. An argument ensued with the security guard and Mr Malema allegedly pointed a firearm at the guard.”

She said the guard was allegedly pushed against the gate and the group opened it by force, damaging it.

“We are still taking statements from the people involved,” Otto said.

The charges were laid at the Polokwane police station.

Malema stands to face more charges after civil rights group AfriForum last week opened a case against him for allegedly assaulting a man, Cassie Moller, at a Steers outlet in Tzaneen around 02:00 on 6 August.
