N WEST RETIRED PROFESSOR ELECTED NATIONAL CHAIRPERSON OF SA OLDER PERSONS FORUM

Mpumalanga- North West retired Professor Marekwa Legotlo has been elected national chairperson of the South African Older Persons Forum (SAOPF) at a highly contested bi-annual election, Social Development MEC Fenny Gaolaolwe said at a four day National Golden Games held in Mpumalanga.

“Our province is pleased and humbled by the appointment of Professor Legotlo into this leadership. The elections were so tight with 18 nominees from all the nine provinces. Professor Legotlo made it to the top. We hope that by his wise leadership the forum will be able to articulate the needs and concerns of older persons,” Gaolaolwe said.

After receiving the accolades, Professor Legotlo said his contribution to the national forum would be using advocacy programmes to make people aware of the rights of older persons, and to ensure that their needs are addressed in accordance with relevant legislation, government services and older persons empowerment programmes.

“We will ensure that older persons have security, lead a healthy lifestyle, have decent houses and that they are represented right from ward level,” Professor Legotlo said, adding that the forum will leave no stone unturned in eradicating all forms of discrimination against older persons especially in public health facilities.

MEC Gaolaolwe is leading a team of 127 participants that is set to compete in various sporting codes at National Golden Games held at Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga.

Youth movement want Umlazi highway renamed after Meyiwa

Cape Town – The National Freedom Party Youth Movement (NFPYM) has called for the Mangosuthu Highway in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal to be renamed after the late Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain Senzo Meyiwa, reports KickOff.com website.

“As the NFPYM, we humbly request the municipality to honour our fallen hero by renaming Mangosuthu Highway in Umlazi after this national icon,” Secretary General Busi Tshabalala said in the statement.

“We are of the view that this will be a befitting honour for this humble being, who was always patriotic in every respect.”

Meyiwa was shot dead at his girlfriend’s house in Vosloorus east of Johannesburg late on Sunday evening, during what has been described as a botched robbery.

Tshabalala said that Meyiwa was an extraordinary man who achieved so much coming from a township like Umalzi.

“He inspired confidence and was a role model to upcoming youth. As young people we looked up to him and he left a legacy that will stay with us for decades to come.

“It’s for this reason that as the NFPYM, we feel that the least we can do remember this young man is to have Mangosuthu highway renamed after him.”

DA: Check reveals no Tshabalala degree

Johannesburg – A background screening process commissioned by the DA has provided more proof that SABC chairwoman Ellen Tshabalala does not have a degree, the party said on Thursday.

“The DA enlisted the services of Managed Integrity Evaluation to check Ms Tshabalala’s qualifications against the National Qualifications Register, a process referred to as ‘background screening’,” Democratic Alliance MP Gavin Davis said in a statement.

According to the party, the process revealed that:

– Tshabalala registered for a Bachelor of Commerce (BComm) at the University of SA (Unisa) in 1996.

– Her student number was 0658-212-5.

– She was last registered in 1996.

– The qualification was not completed.

“The DA will present the results of the screening process as new evidence at the parliamentary inquiry into Ms Tshabalala’s qualifications when it resumes,” Davis said.

“It could not be verified whether or not Ms Tshabalala holds a postgraduate diploma in labour relations from Unisa as this qualification is not included on the National Qualifications Register.”

SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago said the broadcaster could not comment on the matter.

“Ms Tshabalala is dealing with it. The matter is before court and we cannot get involved,” he said.

On October 23, Tshabalala obtained an interim interdict in the Western Cape High Court halting an inquiry into whether she lied about her academic qualifications.

The announcement was made during a meeting of Parliament’s portfolio committee on communications, which was due to start the inquiry.

“On the 23rd of October 2014 the judge ruled we may not proceed with the meeting,” committee chairwoman Joyce Moloi-Moropa said at the time.

MPs would have to wait until the judge ruled on the matter to be heard on November 3.

“On October 22, Ms Tshabalala’s legal representatives served a notice of motion on the following: The Speaker of the National Assembly, the portfolio committee on communications, the president of the Republic of South Africa and the minister of communications,” Moloi-Moropa said.

The notice of motion asked the court to determine whether the proceedings before the committee were a disciplinary hearing or not.

MPs insisted they were merely conducting an inquiry, but Tshabalala said it was taking the form of a disciplinary hearing.

Tshabalala is accused of misrepresenting her academic qualifications when applying to the committee for the SABC job.

She stated on her CV that she had a BComm degree from Unisa and a post-graduate degree in labour relations.

Unisa has since stated that, according to its records, she had neither of the qualifications. – Sapa

Cops say no arrests in Meyiwa case

Johannesburg – Reports that two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of Bafana Bafana goalkeeper and captain Senzo Meyiwa are not true, Gauteng police said on Thursday.

“There is nothing like that. We are still investigating… the reports are untrue,” Brigadier Neville Malila said.

The SABC reported on Wednesday night that two people had been arrested.

According to the public broadcaster, the two were being held for questioning after they were arrested in Nongoma, in northern KwaZulu-Natal. They were reportedly arrested following a tip-off by members of the public.

Meyiwa, who was also the Orlando Pirates captain, was shot dead in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, while visiting his girlfriend, singer and actress Kelly Khumalo, on Sunday night.

The attackers apparently demanded cellphones and money. One cellphone was stolen.

According to The Star newspaper, Khumalo’s friends received WhatsApp messages from her cellphone number on Monday asking for financial assistance.

In the messages Khumalo reportedly claims to have been arrested for speeding on the highway and said her bail was R3100.

She then asks her friends to pay a detective Sello the amount via e-wallet.

Malila said this was “highly unlikely”.

He said Khumalo’s cellphone and those of the other witnesses who were present when the shooting took place were in the police’s possession until Wednesday.

He urged those who alleged that they had paid money after receiving the messages to go to the nearest police station to lay a charge.

“Those will be added to the investigations.”

Meyiwa’s funeral will be held in Durban on Saturday. – Sapa

Taung- A 39 year-old man briefly appeared before Taung Magistrate Court on Wednesday after he was arrested for rape.

Tshepo Lekgolo,39, who is a male nurse at Taung Station clinic, was arrested after he allegedly raped a patient at his workplace.

According to Martha Mongale statement, she went to the clinic for medical attention after she experienced abdominal pains.

Lekgolo allegedly ordered the patient to undress so that he can examine her.

According to Mongale statement, Lekgolo touched her punani and inserted his fingers in her vagina.

He allegedly made sexual advances towards her and told her that, he feels inclined to her as her punani looks attractive.

Mongale,44, apparently refused to sleep with Lekgolo, but he nevertheless forced himself on her.

Lekgolo was granted a R1000 bail after he tabled his reasons not to be denied bail.

A 39-year-old married suspect was ordered not to interfere with witnesses or the victim.

Lekgolo, whose wife is currently pregnant, smiled and breathed a ‘sigh of relief’ after he was released.

After realizing that our cameras were on the shooting mode, he covered his face with a brown leather jacket to hid from a raving eye of the media.

Lekgolo who looked confused like dinosaurs fleeing Juriseen Park, was whiskered away into a car by family members.
The case was postponed until 09 December 2014.

Police investigation continues.
