All the best Amajimbos – Mashaba

Johannesburg- Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba has sent a word of support to the South African Men’s Under-17 National Team (Amajimbos) who take on Egypt in the first leg of the final 2015 African Junior Championship qualifier in Rustenburg on Saturday, 13 September 2014.

The match kicks off at 18h00.

The second leg will be played on 26 September with the overall winner qualifying for the finals scheduled for Niger next March.

“I want to wish the boys and the entire technical staff all the best. This is the last hurdle and I am confident Amajimbos will do the country proud,” said Mashaba who has had a torrid last two weeks.

He led the national U20 to the African Youth Championships scheduled for Senegal next year and six days later, led Bafana Bafana to their opening 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Sudan in Khartoum where they routed the home side 3-0 before rounding off the week with a goalless draw with Nigeria in Cape Town on Wednesday.

“The boys (Amajimbos) must take advantage of the buzz in the country but they must not put themselves under undue pressure just because they are playing at home. They still have the second leg to play although first impressions are the ones that matter,” said Mashaba. “They must just work hard, express themselves and have self belief.”

The Senior Men’s National Team mentor said he would travel to Rustenburg to give the boys moral support.

“I want to be with them both physically and spiritually. This is our future and the nation must support such developmental projects,” he said. -TDN

Johannesburg – Sasol Banyana Banyana are set to take on Botswana in an international friendly match this Saturday, 13 September 2014 at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium, Rustenburg. Kick-off is at 15h00.

Botswana return to South Africa for the second time to play Vera Pauw’s charges. They were walloped 4–0 earlier in June at the Isak Steyl Stadium and Pauw will be hoping for another excellent performance from the hosts.

“We are ready for the match against Botswana. We have played them before, but this time around we have improved a lot and we hope to show that on the field tomorrow. Our objective is to aim for excellence in the build-up, finishing and defence. Every task must be performed to the highest standard,” said Sasol Banyana Banyana coach, Vera Pauw.

The Sasol-sponsored women’s national team are in their final stages of preparations to the biggest women’s football tournament in Africa, the 10th edition of the African Women’s Championships (AWC), which will be hosted in Namibia from 11 – 25 October.

Vera Pauw’s charges have been hard at work with a month left before they travel to Windhoek. Sasol Banyana Banyana are yet to lose a match since the start of their preparations for the AWC.

Thus far they have played six international friendlies, winning five and playing to a goalless draw against Zimbabwe.

Pauw is happy with the team’s performance and looking at fine tuning the team ahead of their opening match against Cameroon on 12th October.

“We are capable of creating chances but the team can do better as we head closer to competing at the Championships. We need to be more aggressive in front of goals,” she concluded.-TDN

Man arrested for fatal road rage attack

Johannesburg – A Lenasia man allegedly involved in a road rage attack in which a man was shot dead was arrested on Thursday, Gauteng police said.

“He was arrested after community members provided us with information,” said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

He said the R50 000 reward offered for information on Koobendran Moodley’s whereabouts would be given once police identified exactly who provided the information.

Moodley, who was travelling in a Silver Nissan Navara on 6 July, allegedly shot and killed another motorist in a silver VW Polo and injured the passenger. The incident happened in Starling street in Lenasia South extension one.

He then fled the scene.

An eyewitness reportedly told The New Age that Moodley went to a tavern on the day, got into a fight with patrons, and was forced to leave.

He was then involved in a car accident, but did not stop to exchange details.

The driver of the car he crashed into followed him home where an argument ensued, during which the driver was shot dead and another injured.

Gauteng correctional services spokesperson Ofentse Morwane confirmed to the newspaper at the time that Moodley was out on R1 500 bail after being arrested for theft.

3 to appear for ‘headless’ murder

Durban – Three minors involved in the murder of a woman who was decapitated will appear in the Durban Regional Court on Friday.

The court had been scheduled to hear their pleas on Thursday, when an 18-year-old pleaded guilty to killing and decapitating a prostitute.

Falakhe Khumalo’s statement was read to the court, where he was ultimately sentenced by magistrate Andand Maharaj to life imprisonment for his role in the death of Desiree Murugan, whose headless body was found by municipal workers at Durban’s Shallcross Stadium on 18 August.

A traditional healer, Sivonkaliso Mbili, and his assistant Vusumuzi Gumede, aged 30, who were linked to the murder, have not pleaded and their bail hearing is expected to be heard on 22 September.

The court heard on Thursday that Khumalo was promised R2m for the head of a white, Indian or coloured woman.

His statement detailed how he plotted for more than a year to get the head to pay Mbili, who cured him of a sexually transmitted disease.

He said he and his three co-accused lured Murugan, aged 39, to the stadium, where he paid her R100 for sex and oral sex.

“Whilst having sex, accused number one came behind me with an Okapi knife and she saw him. I then placed my hand over her mouth so that she cannot make a noise. And I held her tight so that she does not move.”

Khumalo said the accused, who is a minor and may not be named, stabbed her several times.

The body was dragged to another part of the sports field, where the head was chopped off.

Khumalo and his co-accused took the head to Mbili, the fourth accused in the trial.

Mbili allegedly ordered Gumede, aged 30, to bury the tins in which Murugan’s body parts were placed.
