Woman who translated the Bible into Nama recognised


“She is not invisible any more,” Ursula Truper says with a thick German accent outside the VGK Church at Steinkopf in Namaqualand.

Truper is referring to her “great, great, great, great, great” grandmother, Zara Schmelen (nee Hendricks), a Nama woman who was born at Steinkopf in the late 1700s.
