MEC Molapisi resuscitated MunMec forum for community safety and transport services in NW


North West Community Safety and Transport Management MEC Gaoage Oageng Molapisi has resuscitated the MunMec forum, which will be addressing intergovernmental programme and how the department and municipalities will work in a more integrated manner.

Resuscitated on Tuesday at Rio Hotel in Klerksdorp, the forum is constituted by the Head of the Department, Directors responsible for safety and Transport, South African Police Service, Mayors, Members of Mayoral Council (MMC’s) from all municipalities responsible for Public Safety and the Crime Prevention units.

MEC Molapisi indicated that the forum will meet in quarterly basis to assess progress and the application of terms of reference of the committee. He encouraged the members to use the platforms not only to report on the challenges but also to provide solutions ant that councillors responsible for community safety must hold regular meetings with their communities to assist the department on its plans to be proactive than reactive.

“Some of the protests can be averted if there is communication between community and its leaders,” said Moalapisi.

He said the main objective of the forum is to coordinate and oversee implementation of safety and transport programmes at both Local and Provincial level.

Amongst others are the terms of references of the forum:

➢  Oversee development of local safety strategy➢  Oversee implementation of safety strategies➢  Oversee development of safety and transport By- laws➢  Coordinate implementation of transport strategies➢  Oversee traffic operational and receive reports➢  Oversee establishment of Community Safety ForumsMembers of the committee applauded the MEC for resuscitating the forum as it creates a platform for them to directly interact with him and that is assisting to unlock the bottle necks.

 “This is not another talk shops because prompt decisions are taken in these meetings which assist in speeding up service delivery to the people, and working together as a team will take our province forward,” said Cllr Legalatladi from Mahikeng Local Municipality.

All dignitaries who attended the meeting were optimistic and looking forward to implement what has been agreed upon by the committee.

The MUNMEC forums are designed to ensure that there will be alignment between planning and budget processes in identifying needs by communities, and further allow the MEC to share with municipalities, the Minister and MEC’s meetings and Executive Council resolutions, regarding issues relating to community safety and transport services in the province.
