Johannesburg – The SA Democratic Students Movement (Sadesmo) on Friday called on the home affairs department to visit schools to register pupils for identity documents.

“We believe that if the department acted early and implemented this, it will curb all this complications of IDs challenging the [matriculants],” secretary general Sizwe Simelane said in a statement.

He said it became a problem for pupils to further their studies after matric if they did not have IDs.

Sadesmo had been receiving reports of matric pupils who did not have IDs.

“We appeal that the department of home affairs should play its role in helping out the pupils, so to enable their studies for their future.”

He urged the department to make the application process easier for pupils in schools.

Johannesburg – Eyewitness News (EWN) and Primedia should admit that the cartoon they published was racist, the Cosatu said on Friday.
“Cosatu demands that EWN, and Primedia must admit that the cartoon was racist in the way it falsely portrayed ANC voting clowns as exclusively black,” said spokesperson Patrick Craven in a statement.

He said the media house should issue a formal apology and refuse to continue publishing work by the cartoonists responsible.

Craven said the cartoon was grossly offensive and racist.

The cartoon, by Dr Jack & Curtis, titled “Congress of Clowns. And the clowns who voted them in”, was posted on EWN’s website and subsequently removed. It depicts newly appointed ministers as clowns with big red noses.

On the side is another group of clowns, representing voters, who are darkly shaded and stand and watch, accompanied by a description reading “we the poephols”.

EWN said in a statement on its website that an apology had been issued and the cartoon removed.

“We at EWN apologise for any unintended offence caused. We at EWN will continue to strive for free speech and editorial independence,” it said.

Johannesburg – The DA appointed Phumzile van Damme and Marius Redelinghuys as the party’s national spokespeople, the DA said on Friday.
“The appointment of two spokespeople was deemed necessary in light of the growth of the DA in the 7 May general elections and the increased need to reach a broader spectrum of South African society,” DA federal executive chairperson James Selfe said.

Van Damme, a Member of Parliament, had worked in various roles, both in the Western Cape government and Parliament. She was head of parliamentary research and communications for the DA.

“Member of Parliament Redelinghuys also brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this position. He was previously engaged as the director of communications and research for the DA in the Gauteng legislature,” Selfe said.

Born Stephen Okechukwu Kesh (24 January 1964) the Nigerian team manager has managed the Nigeria national team since 2011. He is one of only two people along with Egypt’s Mahmoud El-Gohory to have won the African Cup of Nation as both player and a coach.

Between 2004-2006 Keshi coached the Togo national team,unexpectedly bringing them to their first world cup tournament,Germany 2006. Having secured Togo’s unlikely qualification, he was promptly replaced by German coach Otto Pfister to the world cup finals,after Togo showed a dismal performance and failed to advance to the knock out stage in 2006 African Cup of Nations in Egypt.

East London – A pastor of the Nazareth Church in Libode, near Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, is on the run following the murder of a 5-year-old child, police said on Friday.

“We have received information that he is in Johannesburg,” spokesperson Warrant Officer Dineo Koena said.

The 40-year-old pastor allegedly stabbed the child with a spear in the head during a church service in April. He has been on the run since.

“The pastor fled the scene of the crime but we are looking for him.”

Koena said it was unknown what led to the attack on the child but police were hopeful to get answers once the man had been arrested.

Mahikeng – Five babies were admitted for observation in hospital after water contamination claimed the life of a baby in Bloemhof, the North West health department said on Friday.

The babies were kept for observation because their immune systems were weak, spokesperson Tebogo Lekgethwane said.

This came after a baby died on Wednesday after contracting severe diarrhoea from the contamination.

More than 200 people were treated in clinics this week for diarrhoea in the water-depleted town.

“The water is back [on] in the area. However, residents are encouraged to boil their water. The municipality will continue to test the water,” Lekgethwane said.

CAPE TOWN – A negotiator for the Association of Mineworkers and Contraction Union (Amcu) says the newly established intergovernmental task team could be a glimmer of hope in the costly platinum strike.
Around 70,000 mineworkers at three of the world’s largest platinum producers have been on strike since the beginning of the year demanding an entry level wage of R12,500 per month.
