Fraud case against new MP

New ANC MP Patrick Mabilo is being investigated for fraud, the Hawks said on Thursday.

“We have a fraud case to do with his credit card,” spokesman Paul Ramaloko said.

“Investigations are still ongoing.”

He said the case was opened in 2012 against Mabilo, a former Northern Cape transport, safety and liaison MEC.

Ramaloko could not give more detail.

According to City Press online, Mabilo had racked up a bill of close to R200,000 in 2012/13 and had not been able to provide the necessary documents to prove his expenditure.

Mabilo was number one on the African National Congress’s Northern Cape’s list of candidate nominations for the National Assembly.

He was sworn in as an MP on Wednesday at the first sitting of the fifth democratic Parliament.

No agreement in platinum strike

Cape Town – No agreement has yet been reached with striking platinum mineworkers, their employers said in a joint statement.

“Contrary to some media reports, no agreement has yet been reached,” Anglo American Platinum, Impala Platinum and Lonmin said in a statement on Friday night.

The companies confirmed that the Labour Court continued to broker mediation between themselves and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu).

“The producers reaffirm their commitment to finding a common commitment to endeavour to resolve this dispute.”

Members of Amcu at the companies went on strike on 23 January demanding a basic salary of R12 500 per month. They rejected the companies’ offer that would bring their cash remuneration to R12 500 by July 2017.

Ex-Agang spokesperson takes party to CCMA

Cape Town – Former Agang SA spokesperson Thabo Leshilo is taking the party to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration after it apparently failed to pay him his December Salary, the Saturday Star reported.

Leshilo was fired by party leader Mamphela Ramphele earlier this year and told the newspaper his financial situation was “very bad” because he had not received his salary or expenses he incurred while on the job.

He had defaulted on payments for his house, school fees and had his cellphone suspended.

“People cannot reach me because that was my personal cellphone and we never got cellphone allowances,” he was quoted as saying.

“I am struggling to pay my bond and I have not paid my electricity, which could be cut off soon.”

Agang chairperson Mike Tshishonga told the newspaper he had been made aware of the CCMA application but that party Chief Operations Officer Andrew Gasnolar was dealing with the situation.

The party’s current spokesperson Mark Peach told Sapa he had not received any information about Leshilo’s situation and would need to revert to the human resources department.

He said he would have more information on Monday.
