Supra Mahumapelo: We will hit the ground running

Taung- African National Congress North West leadership descended to Taung coverground, in Taung to celebrate their victory after ANC won national elections on 07 May 2014.

The celebrations started on Thursday and ended in Taung where Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district gathered together to celebrate.

The ANC devoted supporters proliferated at Taung coverground to hear the message of thanks from their leaders. The main celebration was hosted at Luthuli House, ANC Headquarters in Johannesburg on Saturday after IEC officially announced the elections results.

The ANC provincial chairperson Supra Mahumapelo who is destined to succeeds current premier Thandi Modise as new North West premier soon if our mole is to be trusted, graced the event alongside provincial secretary-general Dakota Legoete, NEC member Humprey Mmemezi, North West Legislature spokesperson Mongezi Tsenca, MEC of Sport, Art and Culture mme Tebogo Modise who was representing one of alliances SACP and other high-profile dignitaries.

The event started late but that did not discourage the masses as they welcomed their leadership by ululating and singing struggle songs.

ANC North West chairperson Supra Mahumapelo welcomed and thanked all ANC volunteers. He also sent his gratitude to more than 11 million supporters who voted for ANC.

“We would like to welcome and thank those who voted for the ANC. This really shows ANC still have overwhelming support and we must hit the ground running” Mahumapelo said.

He said now the challenges lie ahead as the work starts now.

“We want to assure you great people that service delivery will be our first priority. All unrest we have experienced across the province, will be dealt with. We will send our representatives to come to you the people and try to speed-up the solution” Mahumapelo outlines.

Mahumapelo promulgated that youth development issue will be taken very seriously as the ANC want to empower the youth.

“We are still discussing the issue of teachers college to be re-opened. We expecting Nursing college soon to be here in Taung and our mandate is to turn Taung into a city within three years” said gaudy Mahumapelo.

The crowd screamed “Mahumapelo for premier with excitement and went bizarre when he dances to Ytjhukutjha song.

Mahumapelo became wry when asked about the newly-born political party Economic Freedom Fighters as now the official opposition party in the province.

“We are unfazed because ANC is an elephant, no one can defeat this animal. We have seen many political parties formed and disappeared in thin air. What you journalists and analysts are not aware of is, all ANC breakaway political parties never last. We have seen one leader of other political party ‘eating a hat’ on national television and I was surprised if he is mentally-handicapped or what” he smiles.

NEC of Sasco Sebang Motlhabi valorously said ANC need more youth in high ranks so that the youth’s voices can be heard. “We need more youth to occupy high seats come Local government elections. More youth need to be empowered and that will help the mandate of the ANC to gain more momentum in economical development” Motlhabi said.

Mahumapelo urged all public servants to be more effective and know that they have been elected by the people, so they need to serve the masses. He said the issue of MEC’s diary need to be looked at, as they must not occupy offices without going to the people who elected them.

“We urge all ANC elected persons to serve the masses effectively. Those who commit corruption and enriched themselves with public money, will meet the might law of the ANC. MEC’s and other bigwigs need to come to the party. They need to raise their hands and to be counted” he concludes.

A man sanctioned to 18 years after murder

Prieska- A 30 year-old man, Pieter Jacobus Kleyn from Marydale outside Prieska was sentenced to 18 years this week in the Prieska Regional Court.

The sentencing follows a murder which took place in Marydale on the 5th of October 2012 at around 23:40.

“On this day, a 51 year-old man (Hendrik Gouws) was stabbed with a knife in his neck by Kleyn. It is reported that the deceased visited a female person during the incident” lieutenant Donald Mdhluli said.

Pieter Jacobus Kleyn and Hendrik Gouws apparently had a quarrel where Gouws was stabbed and unfortunately Gouws died due to his injuries.

Marydale Police were called to the scene and a case of murder was opened. Kleyn was immediately arrested at his place few moments after.

Sergeant Belvin Ellias Moseki was tasked to investigate the case.

“Pieter Jacobus Kleyn was eventually convicted of murder and sentenced to 18 years in prison. Lieutenant Colonel Israel Riet, the Prieska Cluster Commander has welcomed the sentence and indicated that this will serve as a lesson to other offenders that crime does not pay, and that people should try and use other means of communication and mediation rather than resorting to violence” Mdhluli said.

Lieutenant Colonel Riet further thanked the members for their hard work in ensuring that the perpetrator received a well-deserved sentence. He also encouraged them to keep up the good work.-TDN

Modise: No bail for rape suspects


North West Premier Thandi Modise has called for no-bail for suspects arrested in connection with the rape of two women over the weekend.

In condemning rape incidents and appealing for intensified united action against the scourge of rape, Premier Modise urged women to avoid high risk places such as taverns and shebeens where perpetrators target the vulnerable.

“Young girls and women should consider who they go out with at night and where they go for entertainment and not accept lifts from strangers,” Premier Modise warned. According to police, a man was arrested for allegedly raping a 24-year-old woman at Tshwaranang section in Bethanie.
“It is alleged that the victim was walking home on Saturday night from a tavern when she was confronted by the suspect who threatened her with a knife before raping her,” Captain Pelonomi Makau said.

The man fled the scene but was later arrested.

In another incident, a 31-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a 31-year-old woman in Waterfall East.

According to Captain Makau, the man had allegedly picked up the woman on Saturday at a filling station after promising her a job in Rustenburg.

They drove to the man’s house and he allegedly raped her.

Makau said the woman managed to escape on Sunday and reported the matter to police.

Both suspects were expected to appear in court on Monday.-TDN

The job is not done yet – Mashaba


Johannesburg-Coach of the South African Men’s Under 20 Team, Amajita, Shakes Mashaba believes his charges have the advantage but the job is not done yet.

Mashaba was speaking after a 2-0 victory over Ethiopia in a 2015 African Youth Championships qualifier played in Addis Ababa on Sunday, 11 May.

The second round first leg clash took place at the National Stadium.

Substitute Tshepo Chaine and Siyanda Ngubo scored the two goals in the 68th and 85th minutes respectively.

“I am happy with the way my charges played but I believe we could have done better. We missed clear chances in the first half – we could have been maybe four goals up by the break. But these are things we need to work on and improve. There is a lot of work ahead of us we should get too excited. Let’s celebrate and go back to work,” said Mashaba.

“I also told my boys that the job is not done yet, this was just the beginning. Having won the first leg away from home, we now have an equally important match to finish off what we started so we can realize our dream of getting into the African Youth Championships tournament. For now we will take a short break and will regroup to prepare for the second leg.”

Amajita return home on Monday, 12 May and are expected to land at 13h00 at the OR Tambo International Airport.

A man found dead near Barkly West road

Kimberley- Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a body of a man was found on the Barkly West Road R31.

“According to our preliminary investigation, it indicates that the man could have been killed in the hit and run” lieutenant Olebogeng Tawana said.

The body was discovered on Monday at about 5am.

The deceased was wearing a blue & white jacket, blue trouser and black Nike sneakers. The deceased had a grey beard and grey hair.

He should be between the age of 60 and 70 year-old.

Any information that may assist with the investigation must be communicated to the investigating officer Detective Constable Gwyneth Paulsen at 082 3020 407 / 053 8384 210.

Police are looking for missing Mnguni,4

Warrenton- Police in Ikhutseng, near Warrenton in the Northern Cape are looking for a 4 year-old child who went missing on Saturday.

“It is alleged that the child known as Kuyinhlanhla Mnguni was attending a family function with his parents at 2388 Zone A, Ikhutseng when at about 21:00 he wandered out through the opened door and gate. No one noticed the child leaving” colonel Priscilla Naidu said.

The child is autistic and his parents are frantically appealing to the community to assist in finding the boy.

His speech is not fluent and one may have difficulty in communicating with him.

“He was wearing a blue tracksuit top and a green tracksuit trousers with black slippers” Naidu said.

Premier Modise condemns Lonmin killings


The senseless violence related to the strike by AMCU in the platinum belt should be stamped out before more lives are lost, North West Premier Thandi Modise said in condemning renewed violence in which six non-striking miners were killed and six others were wounded on Monday.  

“These incidents call for parties involved in the wage dispute to sober up and employ extraordinary measures to immediately end the strike which has entered into its fourth month before matters get out of hand. One life lost thus far is a life too many,” Premier Modise said.

Modise called on non-striking workers who have been on the receiving end of the violence and acts of intimidation to exercise restraint, remain calm and to let the law to take its course.

The Premier called on employers to tighten the security of non-striking workers who are reporting for duty. She also appealed to the community to assist police in their investigations to ensure that those responsible are behind bars.

“No bail for perpetrators and stiff sentences for those behind the reign of terror unleashed on non-striking miners and communities in the platinum belt will be the only deterrent,” Modise stressed.

 

According to police, a 60-year-old mineworker was found dead with multiple stab wounds in Bapong on Monday,.“On Sunday, in Bapong village, a couple was found strangled to death, the wife was stripped naked, the husband was a mineworker… the couple ran an illegal shebeen,” police spokesperson Brigadier Thulane  Ngubane said.

Ngubane said that another was burned to ashes in the Big House informal settlement in Bapong.-TDN

North West couple found strangled to death

Bapong- A 47 year-old man and a woman,38, allegedly found dead at their house in Legalaopeng village near Bapong at about 17:00, police said.

Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said the neighbours noticed that the victim’s place which was used as a shebeen was very quiet on Saturday and Sunday and became concern.

Brigadier Ngubane said the neighbours called the family’s next of kin and on his arrival, the family found both deceased with open wounds in their necks.

“They were allegedly strangled with a cloth and a woman’s gown belt respectively. The motive of murder is unknown” he said.-TDN

One dead, six assaulted at Lonmin mines

Rustenburg- A 60 year-old Lonmin Saffi Shaft male employee was found murdered between Saffi shaft and Bob mine hostel on Monday at about 05:00, North West police said.

“The man had several stab wounds on his back, chest and ribs. It is alleged that the victim was found by the mine security personnel while patrolling the area” brigadier Thulani Ngubane said. 

No one has been arrested yet and investigation continues.

Meanwhile the police are investigating cases of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after six males were attacked by unknown suspects in the vicinity of Saffi shaft. The motive of the attack cannot be confirmed at this stage, and one of the men was admitted at hospital with serious injuries while others sustained minor injuries.-TDN

Victorious U20 arrive to warm welcome


Johannesburg- The South African U20 Men’s National Team, Amajita have arrived back in South Africa and were welcomed by SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan and members of the Banyana Banyana squad preparing to play Ghana in a friendly match at Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday.

Amajita walloped Ethiopia 2-0 in the first leg of the 2015 African Youth Championships qualifier at the National Stadium in Addis Ababa on Sunday.

Upon touching OR Tambo International Airport, the squad was met by SAFA President and the SASOL Banyana Banyana squad.

Amajita captain Ayabulela Maqgwaka was touched by the amount of support.

“It is always good to be received in this way. We really appreciate the support shown by the Association and Banyana Banyana following our win in Ethiopia.

“We are well aware that we are not there yet as we are taking one match at a time but the win has really given us a huge fillip. We will soon regroup for the second leg and we hope to continue from where we left off. We should however, never take the second leg for granted,” said the SA U20 captain.-TDN
