Banyana Banyana gear up for Zimbabwe

Johannesburg-Banyana Banyana coach Vera Pauw is happy to have a full complement of players in camp as they step up preparations ahead of the international friendly match against Zimbabwe scheduled for Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday, 12 April 2014. The match kicks off at 13h30.

Pauw has called up 31 players following the selection camp that took place two weeks ago as she looks to put together a strong squad for the CAF African Women’s Championships scheduled for Windhoek, Namibia in October.

USA based defender Jermaine Seoposenwe and midfielder Kylie-Ann Louw will however, not be part of the squad. The coach has in their place brought in Letago Madiba who plays for the Tshwane University of Technology Ladies side.

“This is our first official training following the selection camp two weeks ago. These players will form the core base of the squad consisting about 25 players. But for the match against Zimbabwe, I will have to trim the squad to 18 players.

“I am going to give every player a fair chance and am expecting to see stiff competition. A combination of new and old faces should provide a positive vibe in the team set-up,” said Pauw.

The Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana will play a practice match against the School of Excellence U/16 squad on Tuesday (8 April) at Bedfordview FC Training Grounds.

“The encounter against the boys will provide me with a good assessment on areas which we need to work on. I have seen past footage of games against Zimbabwe; they are a good side and this would also be good preparation for the team that will play against Comoros in the African Women’s Championship qualifiers. We want to make huge steps in building the best possible squad for the Championships in October,” said Pauw.

Premier Modise condemns shootings and torching of miner’s car

North West Premier Thandi Modise has reiterated her condemnation of violence and intimidation of non-striking mineworkers in the platinum belt. This follows a shooting incident and torching of a 47-year-old miner’s car in Thekwane outside Rustenburg earlier today.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the senseless violence which does not advance the course for which miners are on strike but deepens rivalry and intolerance.” Premier Modise said.
Modise urged parties involved in the wage dispute to find an urgent solution to end the protracted strike as its impact on the economy and the lives of miners is devastating.
It is alleged that the miner and his wife both of whom are employed at Siphumelele 1 shaft were awoken by several gunshots just after midnight.According to police, the car belonging to the man who is reportedly a member of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) while his wife is a member of the Workers Association Union (WAU) was partially burned during the incident.
In another incident,a 29-year-old member of WAU allegedly received a phone call on Sunday night  warning him not to encourage other workers to go back to work.
The man reportedly found a dead dog and a dead cat on his doorstep in the morning at around 5:30 am.
Premier Modise has called on police not to leave any stone unturned until those responsible for the terror campaign and senseless violence are behind bars.-TDN

My prostheses are an extension of my body- Oscar

Pretoria – Paralympian Oscar Pistorius sees his prostheses as an extension of his body, he told the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Monday during his murder trial.
“I don’t want anybody touching them,” he said to questioning from his lawyer Barry Roux.

Roux had asked Pistorius why he covered them up when he put them next to his bag at athletic events.

“I’m a bit shy about them, a bit embarrassed about them when I don’t have them on,” he said.

Roux also asked him about the effect his competing in international sporting events had on his social life, friends, and family.

He replied: “Finding time to speak to friends and family is really difficult.”

Pistorius is accused of the murder of model and law graduate Reeva Steenkamp on 14 February last year.

He is also charged with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, and two counts of discharging a firearm in public.

He allegedly fired a shot from a Glock pistol under a table at a Johannesburg restaurant in January 2013.

On 30 September 2012 he allegedly shot through the open sunroof of a car with his 9mm pistol while driving with friends in Modderfontein.

Oscar: I was simply trying to protect Reeva

Pretoria – Paralympian Oscar Pistorius took the stand in his murder trial on Monday to testify about the night he shot dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Pistorius, dressed in a black suit, white shirt and black tie, made his way to the dock after his lawyer Barry Roux indicated he would testify.

Pistorius looked around for his glasses as he walked to the witness box.

He was sworn in while standing and asked to stand while giving evidence.

His lawyer Brian Webber handed him a pillow.

Apology

“I would like to take this opportunity to apologise,” he said as he stood, slowly turning to his left to face Steenkamp’s mother June and relatives sitting in the front row of the public gallery.

The clacking of the laptop keyboards from the journalists in the public gallery intensified as he continued: “…to Mrs Steenkamp, Reeva’s family, to those of you who knew her…”

Judge Thokozile Masipa interjected: “I don’t like doing this to you, but I can hardly hear you.”

He continued: “I wake up every morning and you [her family] are the first people I think of, the first people I pray for…

“I was simply trying to protect Reeva.”

He said he could promise her family she felt loved when she went to bed that night.

Medication

Pistorius said he used anti-depressants and sleeping tablets after the shooting as he struggled to sleep.

Pistorius’s testimony would not be televised as the court ruled only an audio broadcast would be allowed.

Pistorius is on trial for the murder of Steenkamp, who was shot through the locked toilet door of his Pretoria home on 14 February last year. He said he had mistaken her for an intruder.

He has pleaded not guilty to premeditated murder and in his plea statement denied he had argued with Steenkamp shortly before the shooting.

He also faces two charges related to contravening the Firearms Control Act.

The State closed its case on Tuesday last week after it called 21 of the 107 witnesses on its list.

Zuma concerned about Nkandla costs- Gigaba

Johannesburg – President Jacob Zuma is concerned about the escalation in costs of security upgrades at his private home in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal, according to Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba.

On Monday, SABC radio news quoted Gigaba as saying some African National Congress members, including Zuma, were concerned about the costs of the upgrades.

Gigaba delivered the Solomon Mahlangu memorial lecture in Limpopo at the weekend.

He reportedly said that if Zuma had not had concerns, he would not have asked an inter-ministerial team to investigate.

Gigaba was critical of Public Protector Thuli Madonsela, accusing her of playing political games, the SABC reported.

In a report, Madonsela found that Zuma and his family improperly benefited from the R246m security upgrades, which included a swimming pool, a cattle kraal and an amphitheatre.
