Pitso: Chiefs will be under pressure

Pretoria – Mamelodi Sundowns boss Pitso Mosimane has hinted that Kaizer Chiefs will be the team under pressure to win the Premiership, due to having two games in hand by the end of the coming weekend.

Sundowns will be in action on Saturday, while Chiefs — currently second in the league standings — will be involved in a Caf Confederations Cup tie and will not be able to take part in the league.

Already a game behind the log-leaders, Chiefs will have two games to catch up by the end of the weekend, and Mosimane said he was happy to sit back and watch as the Amakhosi attempt to win their games in hand.

“It’s going to be tough. We play again on Saturday. To be honest, I’ll be happy to have three more points and have a six point lead and watch,” Mosimane said after Sundowns edged Mpumalanga Black Aces 1-0 at Loftus on Wednesday to stay three points clear at the top of the table.

“I want to play tomorrow if I can. Hopefully I’ll get the same results and I can watch. It’s better when you have points that you’ve already collected, than you have to play for.

“We hope to win (on Saturday) and we’ll leave it up to Wits and Chiefs. Wits still have to play Chiefs.”

For Sundowns to win the Premiership, the mission is simple – win their three remaining games, and score more goals than Chiefs.

Should Chiefs and Downs win all of their remaining fixtures, the league will be decided by goal-difference, a statistic Mosimane says he was looking to improve on Wednesday, but failed by only scoring a single goal.

“The performance was not very smooth. We didn’t play very nicely because the guys were a little bit nervous, we wanted the second goal by all means but we didn’t get it, so we took the three points and we go home,” Mosimane said.

“I needed the goals, we can see that this league is going to be decided by goals… it’s going to be that close.

“It’s not going to be easy and the games are getting less. When the games get less and you win, you are in a proper position, but it’s not easy.”

With the league already poised for a nail-biting finish, Wednesday’s results further indicated a tight finish to one of the closest title races in recent history.

Chiefs beat Polokwane City 2-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, while Sundowns managed a single goal, ensuring the teams are both sitting on a goal-difference of 22.

If both teams finish level on points and level on goal-difference, the league winners will be the team who scored the most goals in the season.

As it stands, Mosimane’s troops lead that statistic, having outscored the Glamour Boys by eight goals. Chiefs will have the trickier of the sides’ remaining games, with a game against Wits later this month causing the most headaches for the Soweto outfit.

Wits have been in dazzling form and still have an outside chance of winning the league, making the fixture between the two title hopefuls a do-or-die encounter for both.

Cosatu: Fire all white civil servants in W Cape

Johannesburg – If the ANC wins the Western Cape in the 7 May general election, Cosatu will ask it to fire more than half the white senior civil servants, the Cape Argus reported on Thursday.

“Their employment would have to be terminated – and within a year,” Congress of SA Trade Unions provincial secretary Tony Ehrenreich was quoted as saying.

“They’ll have to go and start their own businesses. They are better placed to start their own businesses because they have both the networks and the historical infrastructure to do this.”

He said the “sunset clauses” in relation to jobs were gone, and so should “continued white preference”.

“The most recent figures we have are that senior management at the provincial government is made up of at least 57% whites,” he said.

Whites made up only about 16% of the population.

“That means whites are over-represented in terms of the demographics of the Western Cape – so roughly half the whites in senior positions in provincial government would have to go,” he said.-Sapa

Defence witness contradicts Oscar

Pretoria – A defence witness on Thursday contradicted the evidence of murder-accused Oscar Pistorius.

Testifying in the High Court in Pretoria, Roger Dixon said according to his findings a magazine rack had been right next to where Pistorius’s girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp fell and died on Valentine’s Day last year.

He referred the court to a photograph and said there was a blood smear caused by the foot of the magazine rack which had been in the toilet of Pistorius’s home.

However, Pistorius told the court the magazine rack was not there when he broke down the door to get to Steenkamp.

“So whatever the accused is saying, you’re saying he is wrong?” asked prosecutor Gerrie Nel.

“You’re his witness,” said Nel.

“When the deceased fell, the magazine rack was there,” Dixon, a qualified geologist, said.

Steenkamp’s mother June looked down, avoiding seeing the picture of the bloody toilet.

A woman next to her rubbed her back, comforting her.

Pistorius shot Steenkamp through a locked bathroom door at his home in Pretoria on Valentine’s Day last year.

He says he mistook her for an intruder and that the shooting was an accident.

He is charged with murdering her, and also faces three other charges of contravening the Firearms Control Act.

The State argues that he murdered Steenkamp following an argument.

Igesund to know his fate

Cape Town – Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund is set to hear hear his fate as mentor of the national team.

According to the SowetanLIVE
website
, Igesund will on Thursday learn if the South African Football Association (SAFA) will show him the door or not.

Advocate Norman Arendse completed his investigation into the Bafana mentor and SAFA president Danny Jordaan, chief executive Dennis Mumble and the national executive committee have had time to deliberate over the findings.

Arendse was the head of a task team SAFA set up to investigate allegations that Igesund influenced players to demand bonuses ahead of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in January.

Igesund has maintained his innocence, insisting the investigation will clear him of any wrongdoing.

Igesund could also come under fire for Bafana’s poor form. He was tasked to guide them to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and to reach last year’s African Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-finals. He failed on both accounts.

Bafana’s most recent disappointments were a first round elimination in the third edition of CHAN as well as a
5-0 loss to Brazil
at FNB Stadium last month.

Krejcir to be charged for murders- report

Johannesburg – Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir will likely be charged for three murders – one of them being the murder of German supercar specialist Uwe Gemballa, it was reported on Thursday.

Gemballa was murdered shortly after arriving in Johannesburg in 2010. His body was found eight months later with a plastic bag over his head.

The Star reported that investigators had pinned two other murders on Krejcir – that of Sam Issa in Bedfordview in October last year and Zimbabwean Phumlani Ncube who worked for the Czech fugitive as a debt collector.

The newspaper said that sources close to the investigation said Issa and Ncube were murdered with the same stolen police rifle.

It was also likely that Krejcir would face further charges later this year, including money laundering and drug trafficking, investigator Paul O’Sullivan said.

Krejcir was denied bail in the South Gauteng High Court on Tuesday, Sapa reported.

He brought another bail application on an urgent basis after his previous attempt was denied by the same court in January.

Krejcir then launched another application based on “new facts” with the Palm Ridge Regional Court, which denied him bail again in February.

This was Krejcir’s fourth attempt at securing bail since his arrest in November last year.

He is currently facing charges of dealing in drugs, attempted murder and kidnapping together with Desai Luphondo, Samuel Modise Maropeng, George Jeff Nthoroane, Jan Lefu Mofokeng and Siboniso Miya.
Luphondo, Maropeng, Nthoroane and Mofokeng were all released on R5 000 bail in December.

Miya is still in custody. News24

SA U20 to face Malawi in practice match

The South African Men’s U20 National Team has gone into camp in preparation for a practice match against Malawi on Saturday, 19 April 2014 at Nike Football Training Centre in Pimville, Soweto.

The match is scheduled to kick-off at 13h00.

Bafana Bafana assistant coach Serame Letsoaka, who has called up 18 players for the encounter, will lead the squad in place of coach Ephraim ‘Shakes’ Mashaba who is in Namibia.

Mashaba accompanied Amajimbos to Namibia where they are taking part in the Four Nations tournament involving hosts Namibia, Ghana and a select team from Germany.

Letsoaka has had to call up an almost completely different team to the U20 squad that recently won the COSAFA Tournament in Lesotho with Mashaba as most of those players are taking part in the annual Bayhill Metropolitan U19 Premier Cup currently underway in Cape Town.

The U/20 squad will have their first training session at the match venue on Thursday at 10h30 and 16h00.

”This is an important period for all our national teams as we have a very busy schedule, all in line with our vision of getting them to be as active as possible and not wait until the qualifiers of their respective levels,” said SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan.

“This past weekend we had Banyana Banyana playing against Zimbabwe and they will soon be going into camp to face Scotland away. We currently have U17 Men’s team in Namibia playing in a Four Nations Tournament. The U20 Men’s team is in camp to face Malawi on Saturday at Nike Centre.

“Next weekend, we have the start of the SAFA U19 Youth Championship in Bloemfontein. All our national teams are busy. We might not see immediate results but this is a solid foundation for all of our national teams to participate competitively on the international stage.”

As the encounter against Malawi is a practice match, no caps will be awarded.-TDN

Premier Modise condemns shooting that has left two taxi drivers dead and one wounded

Rustenburg-North West Premier Thandi Modise has condemned the shooting incident which has left two dead and another wounded near the Bleskop hostel, outside Rustenburg, on Wednesday

In appealing for calm and calling on the community to assist police in their investigation, Premier Modise said that police should not leave any stone unturned to bring those responsible for the callous crime to book.

“The taxi industry should not be provoked to anger and retaliation. The senseless attack should not serve to ignite a vicious cycle of violence and add fuel to an already volatile situation around our mining communities,” Modise said.

The Premier has expressed concern that the attack occurred in broad daylight in an area that is supposed to be closely monitored by police.

According to police, Four taxi drivers were allegedly talking when a VW Jetta stopped nearby and three of the four occupants got out of the car and shot at the victims before driving off at around 11:00 am.

“Two men, both aged 47 and taxi owners, were certified dead on the scene. The other one was taken to the hospital with serious injuries while the fourth man survived without any injury.”Brigadier Thulane Ngubane  said.

Ngubane said the motive was unknown and no arrests were made.

He said the shooting had not been linked to the ongoing strike by the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union in the platinum sector.-TDN

Chiefs keep in touch

Polokwane – Despite walking to a comfortable 2-0 win over Polokwane City in a PSL match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday night, Kaizer Chiefs still find themselves trailing Mamelodi Sundowns on the league standings.

A goal in each half from George Lebese and George Maluleka handed the Amakhosi the three points, but combined with Sundowns’ 1-0 win over MP Black Aces in their Wednesday night fixture sees the Soweto clubs still three points behind their Tshwane rivals.

Chiefs dominated the majority of the match and had the lion’s share of possession, but they were often guilty of poor decision making in the final third of the field.

Polokwane didn’t offer much in attack, but they did have a couple of decent scoring chances.

The Amakhosi started like a house on fire and opened the scoring in the tenth minute thanks to some strong work down the right flank by Kingston Nkhatha.

The Zimbabwean muscled his way into the right side of the box and squared for Lebese to tap home from only a couple of yards out, 1-0.

Chiefs second chance also came from the right flank in the 21st minute when Siphiwe Tshabalala crossed to find Erick Mathoho in the opposition box, surprisingly so, but his finish matched that of a defender as he shot straight at the keeper.

Polokwane’s best chance of the match came nine minutes later when a poor defensive error from Mathoho allowed Thabo Rakhale in behind the Chiefs defence, but with just the keeper to beat he lobbed his effort over the onrushing goalkeeper and wide of goal.

Chiefs suffered a slight set-back in the 37th minute when Nkhatha had to leave the field injured and was replaced by Katelgo Mphela – although the fans did not think it was a loss as they cheered the Zimbabwean’s departure.

The second half saw Chiefs trying to underline their dominance when Maluleka struck the right hand post after rounding the keeper two minutes after the restart.

Maluleka did find his goal in the 73rd minute when a deflected shot from just inside the box looped over the stranded keeper and into the back of the net, 2-0.

That goal was enough to seal the three points for Chiefs who still trail Mamelodi Sundowns by three points after they beat MP Black Aces, also on Wednesday night.

Scorers:

Polokwane City (0) 0
Kaizer Chiefs (1) 2 (Lebese 10’, Maluleka 73’)

Teams:

Polokwane City: Modiri Marumo, Tlou Molekwane, Vusi Mthimkhulu, Thapelo Tshilo, Vukile Mngqibisa, Thabo Rakhale, Sandile Sibande (Roger Majafa 79’), Jabu Maluleke, Galabgw Monyana (Esau Kanyenda 60’), Thobani Mncwango, Sipho Jembula (Siphesihle Nzimande 70’)
