Johannesburg – The DA was the only political party that could deliver the vision of South Africa enshrined in the Constitution, parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko said on Saturday.

“The Democratic Alliance carries with it the promise of the new South Africa enshrined in our Constitution,” she said in Upington, in the Northern Cape.

“This promise is within the reach of the people of the Northern Cape…Many political parties talk about diversity but the DA is the only party that walks the talk of diversity.”

She said that her party was the most racially diverse in South Africa.

Mazibuko took aim at the African National Congress over President Jacob Zuma’s comment that South Africa had a “good story to tell”.

She said the people of the Northern Cape were all too familiar with the ANC’s ‘good story’.

“It is the ‘good story’ of John Block, the ANC’s provincial chairperson – a man who is facing charges of corruption, fraud and money-laundering to the value of R49m.

“It is the ‘good story’ of president Zuma, who allowed R246m of public money to be spent upgrading his private home at Nkandla.”

Mazibuko said that these were indications of the ANC’s arrogance and how the ruling party had forgotten the voters who put it in power.

“A vote for the DA will improve our ability to fight corruption in our government. A vote for the DA will change the Northern Cape.”

Johannesburg – George Lebese’s injury time brace saw holders Kaizer Chiefs beat SuperSport United 2-0 to advance to the Nedbank Cup semi-finals at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.

Both teams had chances but the two goalkeepers, Itumeleng Khune and Ronwen Williams, were on high alert to thwart any danger.

The match’s first real chance fell to Chiefs in the seventh minute when Tefu Mashamaite rose above the United defenders to head a Siphiwe Tshabalala corner, but his effort missed the target.

Sibusiso Khumalo played a long ball forward for United but Khune was quick off his line to clear the danger under pressure from Thuso Phala in the 16th minute.

Tshabalala came close to opening the scoring for Chiefs in the 22nd minute as he turned Thato Mokeke inside-out and pulled the trigger, but Williams was equal to the task.

Khumalo conceded a free kick in the 42nd minute but George Maluleka’s attempt at goal was gangly collected by Williams.

On the stroke of half-time, United striker Bradley Grobler watched in agony as his piledriver flew inches wide of Khune’s upright.

In the 49th minute, Edwin Gyimah came to United’s rescue as he made a timely challenge block to thwart Tshabalala’s cross into the box.

The visitors had a chance to take the lead in the 54th minute, but Mashamaite miscued his clearance and the ball fell kindly for Phala, who rifled the ball wide of the target.

Matsantsantsa came close again in the 58th minute, but this time Khumalo’s grass-cutter from a free kick on the edge of the box missed the target.

In the 73rd minute Lebese was hacked down by Thabo Moloi and Bernard Parker took the resultant free kick but Williams, at the top of his game, made a great stop.

In the 86th minute Lebese found himself unmarked inside the box but opted to round the goalkeeper instead of taking a shot but Williams scrambled the ball off the Chiefs player’s feet.

Lebese’s persistence finally paid off in the 90th minute as he buried a pass from Siboniso Gaxa to give Chiefs the lead.

Lebese was not done yet and came back to haunt United with another wonder goal in the 93rd minute to seal a semi-final place for Amakhosi.

Johannesburg – The DA and EFF must be taught a powerful lesson, SA Communist Party general secretary Blade Nzimande said on Saturday.

“Use May 7 to teach the Democratic Alliance a powerful lesson. They say they are for jobs but were against farm workers in the Western Cape,” he told the National Union of Minewokers’ national shop stewards’ council conference in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg.

He described the DA as a party of “political labour brokers”.

“When the DA marches to Cosatu house and Luthuli house, [the party] is black but in Parliament it is white.”

He described the Economic Freedom Fighters as a party full of “corrupt tenderpreneurs”.

“If you owe the SA Revenue Services R16m, do you know how many millions you’ve chowed? They chowed more than R100m,” said Nzimande.

“Some people wear expensive watches and clothes but have never worked a day in their lives.”

According to court documents, EFF leader Julius Malema owed R16m plus interest after failing to submit tax returns between 2006 and 2010.

In 2010, the Sars contacted Malema about his failure to submit tax returns.

It took Malema 18 months, after many attempts by the Sars, to file his outstanding returns.

Malema also failed to register the Ratanang Trust for tax purposes, and Sars had to do this on his behalf.

His legal team asked the High Court in Pretoria in February to postpone his sequestration case. Sars opposed it.

Johannesburg- A never-say-die attitude by Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana saw them come from behind to draw 2-2 with rivals Zimbabwe in an entertaining friendly international at Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The lunch-time kick off match saw new coach Vera Pauw’s charges overhaul a 2-0 deficit to grab a deserved draw before a boisterous crowd that cheered them throughout.

It was the hosts that started with lots of running but were somehow undone by the long balls which the Zimbabwe backline easily dealt with.

And from the first counter-attack, Zimbabwe’s Rutendo Makore got the better of Letago Madiba on a one-on-one situation. The robust Madiba had no choice but bring down Makore leaving referee Maria Kolokotoane with little choice but award a penalty which Makore dispatched with ease in the 7th minute.

Sensing Banyana Banyana had problems in dealing with long balls, Zimbabwe pumped high balls in the penalty area.

From one of those attacks, Marjory Nyaumwe outpaced the static Banyana Banyana defence and her pile driver gave Roxanne Barker no chance to make it 2-0.

It could have been 3-0 but Makore’s audacious effort moments later hit the crossbar.

Banyana Banyana then came out of their shell and a combination of Refiloe Jane and Silindile Ngubane saw the latter’s effort hitting the bar as they started to threaten the visitors.

And after incessant pressure thereafter, a goal had to come.

And it did arrive at the stroke of half time when Ngubane’s shot gave Dzingirai no chance to make it 2-1 going into the second half.

In the second half, Zimbabwe were pinned in their own half but their back four, well marshalled by Melody Musasa stood firm.

Robyn Moodaly could have equalised for Banyana Banyana but her long range effort was brilliantly parried for a corner by Chido Dzingirai as Zimbabwe hang on for dear life.

However, the resultant corner kick went wide.

Banyana Banyana then literally camped into the visitors’ area but brave goalkeeping by Dzingirai frustrated the home side. Refiloe Jane saw her efforts skim the crossbar as Banyana Banyana upped the antic.

Former captain Amanda Dlamini who was introduced as a late substitute had a point blank header saved by Dzingirai as the war of attrition developed into a ding dong affair.

The vibrant crowd then raised the tempo cheering the girls as Banyana Banyana chased what appeared like an elusive equaliser.

But the hard-running Dlamini made it 2-2 as Zimbabwe finally cracked under pressure.

It was a deserved outcome as Pauw’s girls played with more purpose and were by far a better side in the second half.

Zimbabwe could have stolen an undeserved win later in the match but Barker produced a one-handed save from Felistas Muzongondi after the goalkeeper had been left exposed by her defence.

Johannesburg – President Jacob Zuma built his house in Nkandla with his own money, SA Communist Party general secretary Blade Nzimande said on Saturday.

“Zuma built his own house, he did not use taxpayers’ money to build his house,” Nzimande told the National Union of Minewokers’ national shop stewards council in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg.

“He never asked for those extra upgrades.”

Nzimande said the homes of all previous South African presidents had also been upgraded.

Last month, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela found that Zuma and his family had improperly benefited from R246m security upgrades to his Nkandla homestead.

This included a swimming pool, a cattle kraal and an amphitheatre.

Nzimande described Madonsel’a report as “white people’s lies”.

“Papers are the lies of a white man. We are not told the truth about Nkandla. It is being used as a political tool,” he said.

Nzimande said his ministerial home in Cape Town was upgraded without his knowledge or permission.

“They changed the pavement because it did not match the colour of the house’s wall and they put in a guard house larger than an RDP house,” he said.

All ministers homes were upgraded and cost R100m, he said.

Nzimande said he was tired of white people’s lies.

Johannesburg – The police ministry has paid millions of rands for various cases of improper police conduct, the Saturday Star reported.

More than R200m was paid for civil claims during the 2012/2013 financial year, including cases of police brutality, the newspaper reported.

It cited several court cases including one where a 29-year-old Cape Town woman was awarded nearly R2m in damages on Friday.

The woman was raped by an off-duty policeman who offered her a lift 15 years ago.

She was awarded R250 000 for damages and R1.76m for loss of earnings by the Western Cape High Court.

Gareth Newham, head of crime and justice at the Institute for Security Studies said the huge increase in the number of civil claims against police showed there was a problem with accountability.

Cape Town- One man was injured when a vehicle collided into a stationary vehicle on the R27 near Duinefontein, Cape Town early this morning.

When ER24 paramedics arrived on the busy road they discovered the two wrecked vehicles in the middle of the road.

“The driver of the stationary vehicle was trapped within his vehicle after the impact. Rescue services personnel immediately began extrication, using jaws-of-life equipment to remove the door to allow ER24 paramedics access to the patient” Er24 Russel Meiring said.

Assessments showed that the patient sustained moderate injuries including suspected neck fractures.

Paramedics treated the man for his injuries before placing him on a spine board. Shortly afterwards, he was transported to Mediclinic Milnerton Hospital for further medical treatment.

The driver in the other vehicle did not sustain any injuries.

“The patient later told paramedics that he had apparently pulled his vehicle over to the right hand lane after his vehicle broke down. He was busy calling for help when the mobile vehicle drove into the back of his” Er24 Russel Meiring said.

Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.-TDN

The North West Provincial Government has increased funding to support the institution of traditional leadership by increasing its allocation  from R9, 9 million to R 27 million for the 2014/2015 financial year, Premier Thandi Modise announced during the official opening of the North West Provincial House of Traditional Leaders held in Mahikeng on Friday.
“For us as government,  it is essential to provide necessary space and support to traditional leadership institutions, to contribute to strengthening the system of local government through systematic and structured participation in development and service delivery initiatives of government,” said Premier Modise.
Premier Modise, who was accompanied by MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Manketse Tlhape, said the establishment of the House of Traditional Leadership was an acknowledgement, by government, of the important role the institution of traditional leadership can play in defending and consolidating democracy.
“We will continue to support the traditional leadership institutions to acquire requisite capabilities to play a critical role in community development and local economic development,” said Modise, adding that plans to build a finishing school of traditional leadership were already at an advanced stage.
She reiterated the call by President Jacob Zuma for traditional leaders and their communities to discharge their civic duty on the 7 May of exercising their democratic right to vote for progress voting to move South Africa forward.
Premier Modise used the occasion to handover 4X4 Ford Ranger Double Cab bakkies to 19 traditional leaders which she said are part of an array of benefits aimed at making the lives of traditional leaders easy.
These included government subsidised motor vehicle scheme, cellphone allowance, medical aid and subsistence and travel allowance for all qualifying traditional leaders.
There was ululation when Premier Modise announced that the salaries of headmen and headwomen will increase from R2000 to R6740 per month with immediate effect.
Modise said this increment will be backdated from 1 April 2013.
In welcoming the announcements by Premier Modise, Chairperson of the North West House of Traditional Leaders Kgosi Professor Madoda Zibi said the pronouncement was an indication that the government takes traditional leaders seriously.
“This is an indication that the government is serious about traditional leaders. The government is working together with us to improve the lives of our people. This will also go a long way in improving the dignity of Dikgosi, which was eroded by apartheid and colonialism,” said Kgosi Zibi.
“The new vehicles we received today will enable us to go to meetings and service all our communities including those in far flung areas,” said the elated Kgosi Lepono Mathibe of the Bahwaduba Traditional Council in Moretele.
Kgosigadi Anthea Seatlholo and Kgosi Keobusitse Moiloa concurred, saying that the generosity of the government was an indication that the government respects and recognises the role that traditional leaders play.
The opening was attended by the Chairperson of the National House of Traditional Leaders, Kgosi Pontsho Maubane, Representatives of Houses of Traditional Leaders in the Eastern Cape, Free State, Northern Cape as well as representatives from traditional leadership in Botswana.
Ten- year- old Oratile Mashaba from Bogatsu Primary School in Letlhakeng village located in Moses Kotane Local Municipality was the toast of the opening of the 7
th term of the Provincial House of Traditional Leaders when he received special merit certificate in recognition for outstanding performance, hard work, dedication and commitment.
Oratile had scooped a gold medal in the 1200 metres track race for boys at the South African Schools Athletics Primary Schools Championships held in Paarl last month.-TDN
