Injury blow for Sasol Banyana Banyana ahead of Zimbabwe clash


Johannesburg- The Sasol-sponsored South African Senior Women’s National team, Banyana Banyana will be without the services of captain Janine van Wyk for their international friendly match against Zimbabwe on Saturday, 12 April at Dobsonville Stadium. Kick-off is at 13h30. 

Van Wyk will miss out due to a knee injury but the player believes the team has what it takes to challenge the Zimbabweans in the build-up to the African Women’s Championship (AWC) qualifiers.

 

“This is exciting as it is our first official game this year and everyone is looking forward to this game. We have learnt new things with the coach over the past few weeks we’ve been together and this game is a means of gauging how far we are as a team and how much work still needs to be done in preparation for the AWC qualifiers,” said Van Wyk.  

 

Sasol Banyana Banyana have won two games in six encounters against Zimbabwe since 2011 and will be looking to impress the coach as she assembles the squad that will take on Comoros in the CAF African Women’s Championship qualifiers.

 

The Banyana Banyana captain said she was disappointed not to be part of the match against Zimbabwe but also cautioned against complacency.

 

“It’s disappointing not to be training fully with the squad but everyone has been working hard and we will be looking for a win against Zimbabwe on Saturday. Comoros are raked 123 in the world and that’s 71 places below us. We mustn’t take this lightly but take each game as it comes and play to be the best,” said Van Wyk.

 

The ninth edition of the CAF African Women’s Championship to be hosted by Namibia in October will see three top finishers represent the continent at the FIFA Women’s Cup Canada 2015.

 

Kolokotoane Mathabo Maria from Lesotho will be in charge of the friendly encounter against Zimbabwe, she will be assisted by fellow nationals; Polotso Maapara and  Puleng Agnes Mahono. South African referee Akhona Zennith Makalima will sit in as the fourth official and Nkalimeng Makhube from Lesotho has been appointed the match commissioner.

MEC Maloyi appeals for stability in Bloemhof


Bloemhof-MEC for Human Settlements Public Safety and Liaison Nono Maloyi has condemned in strongest terms, the burning and vandalisation of both public and private property in Bloemhof/Boitumelong civil unrest that started on Monday. Thus far houses belonging to municipal officials and government property were destroyed by residents who are protesting over service delivery in their area.

“We are not going to allow anarchy to prevail. We are a democratic state which has platforms and channels to present dissatisfaction or challenges. We will not also allow people to destroy other people’s property mainly because they are dissatisfied. We will make sure that anyone taking the law into their own hands should be arrested and face the full might of the law,” said MEC Maloyi.

MEC Maloyi further appealed for peace and stability in the area. He further called on leaders of the protesting group to use proper channels in communicating their dissatisfaction. He said that destroying property will not assist in addressing their challenges.

Thus far property which includes houses belonging to municipal mayor and other councilors have been burned, while vehicles belonging to motorists traveling along the N12 were stoned. Residents continue to throw stones at police officers who are maintaining a law and order in the area.

About 120 protesters have already been arrested since yesterday. Residents demand that the municipal council should be dissolved or be placed under section 139C.-TDN

A 17 year-old teen arrested for murder in Setlagole

Setlagole-North West police arrested a 17 year-old minor for allegedly killing a Bangladesh shop owner in Setlagole village, near Mahikeng.

Sohel Rana was instantly killed in a robbery on Monday.

Three suspects allegedly entered a local shop and pointed a shop-owner with a firearm. The 17 year-old teenager shot Rana in a head after the security guard pounced on them.

“Three suspects allegedly fled the scene and the security guard shot one suspect on the foot” sergeant Kelebogile Moleko said.

Police followed a lead and arrested a suspect who was shot on a foot.
“He is under police guard in Mahikeng hospital and will appear before court soon” Moleko said.-TDN

Traffic Management Learnership Opportunities In North West


The North West Department of Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison (Public Safety and Liaison Branch) invites applications for the Traffic Officer’s Diploma Learnership, which seeks to capacitate unemployed youth with knowledge of and skills in traffic law enforcement. Upon completion of the programme, the learners will receive a national qualification in the form of a Basic Traffic Officer’s Diploma (NQF Level 4).

Salary: Minimum stipend of R2 700 per month (Ref. 2/2014)

Duration: 12 Months

Requirements

Grade 12 (Matric Certificate)

Valid driver’s licence

Between 18-35 years of age

Attach medical report indicating that the applicant is fit to do strenuous exercise/training

Certificate from SAPS indicating that the applicant does not have a criminal record

Dewani case delayed


Cape Town – The case against honeymoon murder-accused Shrien Dewani was delayed in the Western Cape High Court on Tuesday.

Proceedings would get under way at 12.30pm, National Prosecuting Authority provincial spokesman Eric Ntabazalila said.

Dewani, who arrived around 11.20am, was still being processed at the court, he said.

Dewani arrived at the court in a police convoy, consisting of marked and unmarked cars. He entered through a side court gate.

Media at the Western Cape High Court were told they were not allowed to take pictures of Dewani.

A policeman addressed reporters and cameramen inside courtroom one and made it clear that all camera equipment should be removed at 10.45am.

The officer said the media were not allowed to take pictures as per order of the justice department.

Dewani landed at Cape Town International Airport earlier on a private aircraft.

“He has been transported by a chartered plane from the Bristol Airport in the United Kingdom to South Africa. The department of justice procured the chartered plane,” spokesman Mthunzi Mhaga said in a statement.

Among the reasons for the private aircraft was that Dewani had previously shown suicidal tendencies, said Mhaga.

When Dewani appears in court he is expected to be charged with conspiracy to commit murder and defeating the ends of justice.

He claimed he and his wife Anni were kidnapped at gunpoint as they drove through Gugulethu in Cape Town in a taxi in November 2010.

The couple had been on honeymoon in the country. He was released unharmed, but his wife’s body was found in the abandoned car the next day. She had been shot dead.

Xolile Mngeni was convicted of the murder and jailed for life.

Prosecutors allege Dewani hired him to kill his wife. Two other alleged accomplices are also already serving jail terms in connection with the crime.

Gordon Igesund has announced his Bafana Bafana squad to face Australia and New Zealand next month.

Mpumalanga Black Aces midfielder Themba Zwane has been rewarded for his good form with a debut call-up, but there is no space for in-form Mamelodi Sundowns duo Teko Modise and Lebohang Mokoena, as well as Bidvest Wits duo Sthembiso Ngcobo and Sibusiso Vilakazi, and Keagan Dolly of Ajax. 

Missing from the 5-0 drubbing against Brazil is Bongani Khumalo, Dean Furman, Daylon Claasen and Dino Ndlovu.

Big Brother winner addresses controversy


After having unprotected sex twice on the show, Big Brother winner Mandla Hlatshwayo says he wishes he had been more responsible and used condoms.

Hlatshwayo and Lexi van Niekerk kept viewers glued to their seats with their steamy romance and sex scenes.

Despite the fact that the show was sponsored by a popular brand of condoms, Lovers Plus, and condoms were easily accessible, the two did not make use of them.

Hlatshwayo said there was no excuse for not using a condom as they were placed all over the house.

“It was a heated moment, I do feel that we should have been responsible as condoms were a few metres (away).”

Hlatshwayo and Van Niekerk’s indiscretions happened before the Human Sciences Research Council released a survey on the increasing prevalence of HIV.

The survey reported that among men aged between 25 and 29, condom use fell to 36.1 percent, down from 44.1 percent in 2012, and women were also reported to have registered a decline in condom use.

Catherine Hlatshwayo, Mandla’s mom, sounded irritated during a telephonic interview with The Star.

Asked for a comment on the sex scene between Mandla and Van Niekerk, she said: “It’s nothing, I’m fine with it,” and quickly hung up the phone.

The two had sex a few weeks ago on national television during “shower hour”, and Hlatshwayo asked Big Brother for morning-after pills during his next diary session.

The couple’s two-week courtship started off with a sensual massage and moved on to late-night talks and showers.

Hlatshwayo said he and Van Niekerk would meet and talk about whether they wanted to pursue a relationship.

Hlatshwayo, who has a girlfriend and child outside the show, said the relationship with his girlfriend had “challenges” before he entered the house, and they weren’t on speaking terms.

He felt he owed her an explanation about the events on the show.

Mob kills three after a crate of beer stolen


Cape Town – Three alleged thieves – two of them teenagers – were attacked and killed within eight hours on Sunday by a mob in Khayelitsha.

The murders followed allegations by residents of D-Block in Site C that the three had stolen a crate of beer.

Boitumelong location calm after unrest


Mahikeng – No violence was reported in Boitumelong near Bloemhof on Tuesday morning, North West police said.

“Police are monitoring the scene. There has not been violence this morning [Tuesday]. There is nothing new,” Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.

On Monday, six houses and a community hall were torched during a violent protest in the area.

Schools were also disrupted and the N12 was barricaded with burning tyres. Police were pelted with stones and one nyala was petrol bombed. Two police officers were injured and taken to hospital.

Protesters were demanding the resignation of the mayor and some councillors, accusing them of nepotism and failing to deliver basic services.

Around 100 people have been arrested since the protest began last Wednesday. They have been charged with public violence and malicious damage to property.

Sixteen of them appeared in the Bloemhof Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The case was postponed to Friday when they were expected to apply for bail.

Oscar describes start of relationship with Reeva


Pretoria – Oscar Pistorius met his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp through a mutual friend on 4 November 2012, he told the North Gauteng High Court on Tuesday.
They met through a mutual friend, Justin Devaris, and “hit it off” over lunch.

Afterward she told Devaris that he had forgotten that he had RSVPd with a partner for the SA Sports Awards and Divaris suggested Steenkamp.

Pistorius said he did not think Steenkamp would be that “carefree” but he took Divaris’s advice and she said yes and she would be ready in an hour and a half.

‘Fantastic date’

They went to the SA Sports Awards and later spoke until late. They were famously photographed at that event. He told Divaris that “Reeva was a fantastic date”.

The following day he asked her if she wanted to go for coffee and they saw each other every day for the next six days.

She went overseas after that and when she came back they took November and December getting to know each other.

“I asked her to come with me and she said she needed some time alone,” he said of holiday plans he was making.

She wanted to spend time with a friend at Christmas but the friend cancelled plans and they spent Christmas together with his friends Darren Fresco and his girlfriend.

When he later went to Cape Town she asked if she could stay in his house in Pretoria.

At the end of January it was starting to “pick up”.

The SA Sports Awards is when he “cheated” on his former girlfriend Samantha Taylor, according to Taylor’s testimony earlier.

‘Difficult relationships’

Pistorius said he and Steenkamp had both been in “difficult relationships” before they started dating.

“We both had things that kept us back in our relationship. We had both come out of difficult relationships.”

He said that initially “I was more into her than she was”.

As they got to know each other better, they started caring about each other, he said.

“We started seeing a future with each other.”

On the subject of cars, Pistorius said they both shared an interest in them.

“She was a car enthusiast. It was a common interest of ours.”

Pistorius is accused of the murder of Steenkamp in his Pretoria townhouse on 14 February last year. He shot her through the locked door of his toilet, apparently thinking she was an intruder.

Pistorius is also charged with contraventions of the Firearms Control Act. He allegedly fired a shot from a Glock pistol under a table at a Johannesburg restaurant in January 2013.

On September 30, 2012 he allegedly shot through the open sunroof of a car with his 9mm pistol while driving with friends in Modderfontein.
