Five arrested for truck hijacking


Johannesburg – Five men arrested in connection with a truck hijacking were expected to appear in the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on Monday, said police.

The truck, which was transporting cigarettes, was taken at gunpoint at Ga-Kgole in Limpopo on Thursday.

Police later spotted a vehicle which matched the description of the hijackers getaway car parked at Viking village.

“The brave police entered the yard and found R105 000 worth of cigarettes in the possession of five suspects and [they] were arrested on the spot,” Mulaudzi said on Sunday.

A sixth suspect was still on the run.

The gun, suspected to have been used in the hijacking, was also recovered.

“It’s been taken for ballistic testing,” said Mulaudzi.

The group would face charges of hijacking, armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Four arrested in Potchefstroom with illegal fire-arm

Potchefstroom-Police arrested four suspects for possession of unlicensed firearm and possession of stolen items on Thursday. 

The suspects were arrested at the N12 road after tip-off. 

“The police received a tip- off that there was a vehicle travelling on the N12 from Potchefstroom to Klerksdorp. It is alleged that the suspects were in possession of unlicensed firearm” colonel Emelda Setlhako said. 

The vehicle that was travelling on a high speed was stopped and searched.

The police found the firearm, police hand radio and Bara glove. The four are expected to appear in Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court on Moday.-TDN

North West couple arrested with dagga worth R200 000

The Rustenburg Flying Squad members arrested two suspects for illegal possession of dagga on Sunday.

Police were allegedly patrolling on R556 road between Lekgalong and Barseba villages when they spotted three suspicious vehicles all with Swaziland registration plate numbers  travelling the opposite direction with high speed.

They immediately made a U-turn and followed them. 

“The police managed to stop only one vehicle, searched it  and found four big heavy bags with dagga, estimated at R200 000” colonel Emelda Setlhako said.

A 22 year-old Swazi National was arrested.

After more questioning the suspect took the police to his house at Seraleng near Meriting where an 18 year-old girl who is allegedly the suspect’s girlfriend was found  with dagga parcelled in a plastic estimated at R5000.

“They were both arrested and detained at Boitekong police station for illegal possession of dagga. They are expected to appear in Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday” said Setlhako.-TDN

Three nabbed for rape in Bodibe

Itsoseng-Police arrested three suspects on charges of rape on Saturday.

“It is alleged that the suspects raped a 34 year-old woman in Bodibe village. The victim was in a tavern with the suspects and while on their way home they raped her” colonel Emelda Setlhako said.

A man arrested for bludgeoned ex to death

Itsoseng-North West police arrested a 21 year-old man for murder he allegedly bludgeoned his ex-girlfriend to death on Sunday, colonel Emelda Setlhaku said.

Colonel Emelda setlhako said the atrocity took place at Bethel village and the suspect was arrested.

“A 17 year-old girl was found lying on the streets with her throat slit open. The police arrested her ex-boyfriend in connection of murder” Setlhako said.

The suspect was arrested at Matile village, near Itsoseng and will appear in court on Monday.

Police said the two was allegedly engaged in an argument and that led to the death of the teen.

Govt looking up to the church as a partner – Acting Premier Sebegoe


Rustenburg-Government is looking up to the church as a partner in building a society that is founded on sound family and human values that also that places a high premium on morality, human solidarity and collectivism, North West Acting Premier and MEC for Finance, Paul Sebegoe assured the Platinum Circuit of the Methodist Women’s Prayer and Service Union Manyano Convention that ended on Sunday.In his keynote address delivered at the reception service for the over 4000 women who had gathered for the 58th convention held at the Mogwase Stadium near Sun City on Friday evening, Acting Premier Sebegoe said that Crime, corruption, gender based violence and the abuse of women and children threaten to dim the flame of hope that was lit in 1994 at the dawn of freedom and democracy.“Religious institutions, like the church, continue to play an important role in nurturing our young democracy. They are centres of influence in society. They are especially powerful because they play a major role in forming and informing the consciousness of our people. In the African context in particular, religion is a major source of the development of worldview and values,” Sebegoe highlighted.
Sebegoe said that the church is better positioned to foster meaningful change as it one of the necessary institutions that the government can tap in and partner with in a fight for better life for all.
“The task therefore of the church is to encourage positive collaboration amongst community organs so as to work for the improvement of people’s conditions,” the Acting Premier emphasised.
He appealed to the women prayer and service union that had earlier in the day gone to pray at the infamous Marikana koppie and plant a tree of hope and remembrance to be at the forefront of efforts to build moral, humane and caring communities and to assist spread the message of respect as well as good, honest and ethical behavior in communities.
Evangelist Elise Ledwaba from Magalakwena Circuit in Limpopo who was part of the prayer service at Marikana said that the visit was to show love and to signify that the church cares for the families of those who lost their loved ones in the tragic incident.-TDN

Bidvest Wits are SAFA National U17 champs


Johannesburg-Bidvest Wits beat Kaizer Chiefs 3-0 to win the SAFA U17 National Championships title at the Nike Football Training Centre. 

Goals from Thato Tsibolane, Peter Frosler and second half substitute Khuzulwandile Vilakazi saw the Charles Yohane-coached Bidvest Wits walk away with the title they richly deserved after playing the most enterprising soccer during the tournament.

 

“I am excited about the title and overall, I think we played better soccer and we were very consistent. I have really enjoyed this tournament and would like to take this opportunity to thank SAFA and Grand Parade Investment for providing our youngsters with such an opportunity,” said Yohane.

 

“Such tournaments are good for the country as they provide a solid foundation for future great teams.”

 

His vanquished Chiefs counterpart, Arthur Zwane said while he was disappointed by the outcome, his charges had gained invaluable experience.

 

“We can only get better by exposing ourselves to such competitions. I would like to take my hat off to SAFA and the sponsors (GPI through their subsidiary company Burger King) for investing in our future stars.

 

SAFA junior coach and National Selectors Coordinator, Shakes Mashaba said he was thrilled with the standard of football exhibited by provincial sides.

 

“We saw exciting soccer throughout the week. I would however, want to advice provincial coaches to interact more with some of these established academies to learn a thing or two in order to be at par.”

Maimane leads DA jobs march


Johannesburg – Hundreds of DA supporters marched in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni, on Sunday demanding jobs.

Several police vehicles escorted the protestes led by Democratic Alliance Gauteng premier candidate Mmusi Maimane.

The procession went along several streets with the protestes waving blue placards saying: “Together for change” and “Together for jobs”.

Maimane is set to address the crowd later on Sunday.

In a statement, the DA said leadership of several community organisations based in the east of Gauteng would publicly withdraw their support from the African National Congress and endorse Maimane for premier.-Sapa

SA woman arrested for drugs in Thailand


Johannesburg – A South African woman was arrested for the possession of drugs in Thailand, the department of international relations said on Sunday.

The woman was arrested on Thursday, spokesperson Nelson Kgwete said.

“Officials from the South African Embassy will meet with her tomorrow [Monday] to verify her citizenship and get more information on the incident,” said Kgwete.

He said that no further information was available.
