Fine week for ‘old’ Boks

Cape Town – Pat Lambie may just find that his untimely bout of illness has inadvertently dented his chances of being first-choice Springbok flyhalf at the start of the international season in June.

That is still a long way out, of course, but on Saturday his late withdrawal forced a reshuffle of the Sharks backline for their Super Rugby clash with the Lions at Kings Park: powerful inside centre Frans Steyn moved a step closer to the action at No 10 and revelled in the opportunity as the Durban outfit comfortably stretched their winning start to three from three.

Cope: President must be directly elected

Johannesburg – The president of South Africa should be directly elected, the Congress of the People (Cope) said in its election manifesto released on Sunday.

“Cope will enable people to directly elect their most senior representatives, namely, the president, premiers and mayors,” the party said in its manifesto, which was launched at a function in Bloemfontein.

The party said this “unprecedented” move would “strengthen the power of South Africans to hold their leaders to account”.

The party also said that if they were to come to power they would “downsize government so that resources can be redirected towards investment in the economy”.

The manifesto stated that Cope was committed to supporting an economy that was environmentally sound.

“Organic farming, for instance, will be encouraged to protect both consumers and the environment.”
Regarding education, the party wanted the minimum pass rate to be increased, artisan programmes to be included in the curriculum and physical education made compulsory at all schools.

It also said that unions should be excluded from the appointment and management of teachers.

“Politically, we need to limit the role of unions, and free teaching from the demands of union members that are often in conflict with the interests of the teaching profession, the teachers and learners.”
When it came to health care, Cope pledged that if it were to run government it would ensure that professional managers ran health care facilities.

It also wanted the secrecy bill reviewed “so that it is not used to subvert the freedom of the press or to hide corruption or violate the rights of citizens”.

The party said it needed South Africans to help uplift the country.

“We are calling on you to save South Africa.”
Cope received 1.3 million votes in the 2009 elections after it was officially launched on 16 December 2008 in Bloemfontein.

In January this year, City Press reported that Cope leader Mosiuoa Lekota had said the party was broke but would still be victorious at the ballot.

This year’s general elections are scheduled to take place on 7 May.

Oscar Pistorius trial: Stunning testimony in 1st week

Pretoria – The testimony in the first week of Oscar Pistorius’ murder trial was jaw dropping at times, and more riveting evidence is expected as the prosecution seeks to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the double-amputee athlete intentionally shot dead his girlfriend.

Pistorius’ once-inspiring life story unravelled as witnesses testified about his history of anger, infidelity and recklessness with guns, and his suspicious behaviour on the night prosecutors allege the Olympian murdered his girlfriend and tried to cover it up.

Pistorius’ murder trial – which is being shown on live television across the world – also shed more light on the events in the pre-dawn hours of Valentine’s Day last year, when he shot dead Reeva Steenkamp in a bathroom in his home.

Pistorius claims it was an accident, but prosecutors have charged him with premeditated murder for the killing of the 29-year-old model.

In a Pretoria court, the first witness said she heard a woman’s “blood-curdling” screams coming from Pistorius’ house on the night he killed Steenkamp. Michelle Burger, a neighbor of Pistorius, sobbed in court after recalling that she was haunted by what she heard.

Another neighbour, who is a doctor, described in detail the grisly scene he was confronted with when he entered Pistorius’ home and found a fatally wounded Steenkamp lying on the floor and Pistorius kneeling next to her, weeping, praying and apparently trying to help his dying or dead girlfriend breathe even though she had a terrible gunshot wound in the head and the doctor knew there was little hope.

In court, Pistorius, 27, held his hands over his ears and hunched over as radiologist Johan Stipp recounted how he could not find any signs of life on Steenkamp’s bloody body.

Pistorius shot Steenkamp through a toilet door with a 9 mm pistol, hitting her in the head, arm and hip area and killing her. He says he thought she was a dangerous intruder.

Prosecutors, however, say Pistorius killed Steenkamp intentionally after a loud fight. Three neighbours have testified to hearing a woman screaming and a man shouting before gunfire.

The celebrated runner, the first amputee to run at the Olympics, faces a life sentence with a minimum of 25 years in prison before parole if convicted of murder.

Pistorius has pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him; murder and three firearm-related offenses.

Free on bail, he ended the first week of sometimes damaging prosecution testimony with his now usual routine outside the courthouse of jostling through a gantlet of press and public, flanked by police and security guards who bundled him into an SUV with reflective windows.

“I really thought the state started well, I really did. They are starting with a left hook,” said former state prosecutor and now defence lawyer Marius du Toit, who is not involved in the case. “But, of course, the fight never lasts one round.”

A former girlfriend, who said she was 17 when she started dating Pistorius in 2011, painted a picture of a man quick to anger who carried a gun with him at all times and who once shot it out of a car after an altercation with police.

Threats

Samantha Taylor talked about another incident when she said Pistorius once jumped out of a car with a gun in hand to threaten an unidentified person he thought was following them.

Through tears, she also testified that Pistorius cheated on her twice, the second time with the woman he killed. Murmurs rippled through the courtroom when Taylor said: “He cheated on me with Reeva Steenkamp.”

Another friend told how Pistorius asked someone else to take the blame when a gun he was handling fired under a table in a busy restaurant.

At the start of the trial, the defence objected to what they call inadmissible evidence that amounts to character “assassination”.

While the first five days of proceedings were dominated by doubts over Pistorius’ character and some of his actions on the night of Steenkamp’s death, the defence has sought to poke holes in the prosecution’s case about the sequence of events: It says it can prove that Steenkamp did not scream before the shots and could not have screamed during them, as witnesses have said.

And forthcoming forensic evidence could back Pistorius’ version of the events.

Prosecutors still have “everything to do” to show beyond a reasonable doubt that Pistorius, whatever his previous actions, intentionally killed his girlfriend on 14 February 2013, according to former prosecutor du Toit.

“The ballistic and forensic evidence is going to be crucial in that regard,” he said.

There are questions Pistorius needs to answer, though.

Stipp, the doctor on the scene, said that Pistorius at one point went back upstairs to the area where he shot Steenkamp while she lay dying or dead on the floor downstairs – an unusual reaction. Stipp couldn’t testify to what Pistorius was doing.

And the most recent witness to take the stand, a security guard, added to the suspicions by recounting a call he made to Pistorius after gunshots were reported by neighbours. Pistorius told him everything was “fine”, the guard testified.

The athlete then called him back moments later but didn’t speak and cried before the call ended, the guard said.

Pieter Baba said he told a fellow guard: “Everything was not in order as Mr Pistorius was telling me.”

Wits Make It Four Out Of Four

Second placed Wits claimed a fourth consecutive league victory as they brushed aside Polokwane City 3-1 in an Absa Premiership clash in Limpopo on Sunday.

The hosts had the first chance of the game through Galabgwe Moyana when the Polokwane City forward struck an effort just wide of the target with less than a minute on the clock.

Wits had to wait until the 19th minute of play to register their first shot of the match as Jabulani Shongwe let fly from the edge of the box, but his shot failed to find the target.

The visitors however did not have to wait long to break the deadlock as Siyabonga Nhlapo whipped in a cross for Shongwe to finish this time from close range, and make it 1-0 to Wits in Limpopo in the 27th minute.
Gavin Hunt’s men then doubled their lead 10 minute later as Papy Faty was awarded a penalty after being fouled in the box, and stepped up himself to power home the spot-kick to make it 2-0 to the Clever Boys.
Wits were not done yet and made it 3-0 on the stroke of half-time, as Sthembiso Ngcobo latched onto a cross from Pholoso Moerane before finishing with his left-foot.
Boebie Solomons’ side did however pull one back as they were awarded a pena;ty five minutes into the second-half for handball, which was dispatched by Vukile Mngqibisa.

NWest registering progress in rolling-out infrastructure developments – Premier Modise

The completion of the R 210 million upgrade of the stretch of road
between Sannishoof and Delaraville in the North West is yet another
good story to tell as the province continues to make headways in
rolling out quality infrastructure, Premier Thandi Modise said at the
official opening ceremony held on Friday.

“We are moving South Africa forward. We are happy because with the
completion of this road the public transport will be able to deliver
our people on a proper road. We are also happy because this road is
one of the most strategic roads in the province and the country. This
road is just one of the roads that we will be building in all corners
of the province,” said Premier Modise.

Modise said such infrastructural developments are empowering local
communities through job creation and skills transfer.

The route is considered a vital link between Gauteng, North West,
Northern Cape, Botswana and Namibia.

Deputy Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga who was joined by
Premier Modise and MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport Raymond
Elisha in cutting the ribbon marking the completion of the project,
said South Africa was a much better place today and continues to make
headways to improve the well-being of its citizens.

“We have managed to transform South Africa from the bad state that it
was to a much a better country with better roads, railways, houses,
power stations, water infrastructure and access to health care and
good education system,” said Deputy Minister Chikunga.

In his remarks, MEC Elisha said the project was part of the transport
infrastructure network that is being developed across the province.

“We believe that a road should not be a road in isolation and as such
through this project we have also prioritised job creation and skills
development. We are also happy to say that this is not the only road
that we are opening in the province, we will also be opening a road in
Mooifontein and many other areas across the province,” said MEC
Elisha.

CEO of the South African National Road Agency Limited, Nazir Allie
said it was important to acknowledge that the current government has
delivered to the people of South Africa.

He said the project created 413 full time jobs during the construction
and that 30 million rand went to their salaries. He said the total
value of the construction was 210 million rand.

The completion of the project was welcome by Kgosi Kogodi Molete of
Bakolobeng as an important step in the right direction.

“Our communities rely mainly on Agriculture and this revamped road
will make a huge difference regarding the speedy delivery of goods. It
will also make a difference with regard to public transport as many of
our people relies on buses and taxis for their transport,” said Kgosi
Molete.

Manager at Saamjan Onderdele, Frikkie Pretorius said that the
rehabilitated road will bring back good business through travelers
passing through Delarayville.

General Secretary of the South African National Taxi Council, Phillip
Taaibosch echoed the same sentiments with regard to public transport.

“The taxi industry uses the roads more than any other industry in the
country and as such any improvement on our roads by government is
always appreciated because it will reduce the rate of unnecessary
breakdowns and delays on the roads. Thus it saves taxi operators lots
of money in repairs,” said Taaibosch-TDN

Mkhize admits Nkandla saga affecting ANC

Cape Town – Party treasurer-general Zweli Mkhize has spoken out about Nkandla saying the saga “is affecting the ANC”.

According to the Sunday Independent, Mkhize said that the party is uncomfortable with the situation and that they do believe the matter should be further investigated.

The newspaper states however, that Mkhize was not suggesting the project should not have been undertaken but that it should have been handled differently and been more cost effective.

He was reported as saying that one of the mistakes made was that the process of communication was not managed correctly. He said ministers and officials should have been communicating among themselves.

This comes after public protector Thuli Madonsela announced on Thursday that her report relating to the upgrades at President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla homestead will be released in two weeks. A media briefing was scheduled for 19 March at her office in Pretoria.

More than R200m was allegedly used for what was described as security upgrades at the Nkandla residence in KwaZulu-Natal.
