Cops arrested after Babuseng’s murder

Johannesburg – Four police officers were arrested on Friday morning for the fatal shooting of a protester in Roodepoort, Gauteng police said.

“After receiving the initial factual report on the incident it was decided that there is enough evidence to arrest and charge the member who fired the shots for murder as well as defeating the ends [of justice] and the others for defeating the ends of justice,” said Brigadier Neville Malila.

“The four members between the ages of 33 and 49 years old, were all arrested in the early hours of this morning on charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice.”

Suspended

Malila said provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Lesetja Mothiba viewed the shooting in “a very serious light”.

“The members are deemed to be suspended as they were arrested and detained on the criminal charges.”

The four officers were expected to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court soon.

Residents of Durban Deep, on the West Rand, took to the streets on Thursday to protest against an eviction order and a lack of housing.

A 28-year-old man, Tshepo Babuseng, was shot dead, allegedly by a policeman, after protesting residents barricaded roads with stones and burning tyres.

Mental strength is key – Salgado

Basetsana midfielder, Grabriella Salgado believes that the South Africans will have to be at their best to overcome a 6-0 deficit against Nigeria in the final 2014 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifier on Saturday.

Basetsana take on the Falconets in the penultimate qualifier that will see one of two African teams book their place for the 2014 edition of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup to be staged in Canada between the 5 and 24 August.

The return-leg qualifier will be played at the Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto on Saturday, 25 January. Kick-off is at 16h00.

Having sat out the first leg match due to injury, Salgado says the 6-0 loss to Nigeria in the first leg was big blow. However, she added that they have a better idea on how to approach the return leg match following a video analysis of the match.

“It means a lot going into this match because we want to make the country proud and restore our pride when we take on Nigeria this Saturday. I am well aware that we suffered a heavy loss against the Nigerians in the first leg but we also want to come to the party on Saturday.

“It is unfortunate that I missed out on the first leg due to injury but when we went through the video of the previous match, it has given me an idea of how they play and I am confident we will match them on Saturday,” said Salgado.

The High Performance Centre-based midfielder said the practice match against Kaizer Chiefs development gave the team direction on areas they need to focus on ahead of the much anticipated match.

“Our first match against the boys was really to point out how we should approach the match on Saturday. Having missed out on an opportunity to be in Costa Rica, we are anticipating taking part in the World Cup that will be hosted in 2016 and I believe a lot of hard work needs to be put into preparing for 2016 if we want to be successful,” said Salgado.

The Falconets arrived in Johannesburg this morning and will train at the match venue on Friday (24 January) afternoon.

Officials from Cameroon have been assigned to take charge of the match, with Neguel Therese as the middle man. Therese will be assisted by Carine Atezambong Forno and Lum Rochelle while Aboutou Therese Sylvie will sit in as the fourth official. Glada Mokowe from Botswana has been appointed match commissioner.

Chinese shop reduced to ashes in Rustenburg

By Obakeng Maje
Rustenburg- The police have started to receive reports of roads barricading and other incidents that are in contravention of the law. This is happening despite the request by police as well as Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) days prior and on the first day of the strike that all those who are on strike must respect the rule of law including the rights of those who are not on strike.

“The incidents that have been reported to the police in the wake of ongoing industrial action include a group of about 50 people that barricaded a road yesterday between Jabulani Hostel and Khuseleka Shaft  with burning tyres, stones and rubbles” brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.

In another incident in the early hours of this morning, a Chinese furniture shop was burnt to the ground at Wonderkop in Marikana. The cause of fire is unknown at this stage and police are investigating a case of arson.

As a results of illegal activities police and traffic had to redirect traffic after passing motorists travelling on road between Chaneng and Shaft 12 in Luka were pelted with stones.

“The police are still following up on the incident, and should it be confirmed that those who are involved are members of AMCU, the union will account for action” Ngubane said.

No arrests have been made in these violent incidents.

Ngubane said this incidents also happened despite continuous engagement between the police and the union leadership. “We still urge AMCU leadership to take control of their members on the ground so that the police can continue to do their work in providing safety to lives and properties”.-TDN

Rustenburg-The first day of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU)’s protected strike generally went well without any serious incidents.  Numerous allegations of intimidations and assault were received, some from the media, but at this stage neither formal complaint nor case has been registered to the police.

“It has been established that certain individuals were seen carrying and displaying dangerous weapons in contravention of Dangerous Weapons Act, 2013 (ACT No. 15 OF 2013).  All those who were seen displaying dangerous weapons or violating the law will be identified and AMCU leaders will be engaged in the investigations” brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.

Ngubane said it is the responsibility of the organisers to ensure that there is no contravention of the law and picketing rules in the on-going strike.

The police will act decisively against those who want to break the law including those who may want to take this opportunity to commit crime.  All acts of criminality must be reported to the police so that the perpetrators can be identified, arrested, charged and prosecuted accordingly.

“The police are currently reviewing evidence and statements obtained relating to the incidents reported at Implats and Anglo Platinum. The police together with Cluster departments at Joint Operational Centre (JOC) including Mine Crime Combatting Forum (MCCF) stakeholders would like to appreciate everybody who respected the rule of law during the first day of the strike” he said.

The Police are encouraging a peaceful strike and people should not infringe the rights of others. They should continue to respect authority and ensure that there is no victimization or intimidation.-TDN

Give water projects plan a chance, Premier Modise appeals to communities

Mothutlung- Communities should give implementation of the over R2 billion Provincial Water Projects Implementation Plan to be rolled out across the North West Province in the short to medium term a chance, Premier Thandi Modise appealed on Friday.

The plan with delivery time-frames is part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs and Premier Modise last weekend.
The Premier says that the province –wide road show that is to soon commence to address stakeholders and representatives of all communities with challenges of water supply should assure them of the scope of the projects and time frames within which their expectations would be met.
“Given these engagements which will involve the Department of Water Affairs and Environmental Affairs, Provincial Departments of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Water Boards, District and Local Municipalities, there is no need for communities to be misled to participate in illegal matches, burn properties or allow themselves to be used by those who seek to exploit their genuine concerns to create an environment for chaos,” stressed Modise.
Stakeholders that include traditional leaders, the business sector, religious leaders, councillors, ward committees, Chairpersons of school governing bodies and community development workers in Madibeng are targeted for the first engagement.
The exact date for the engagement will be confirmed early next week.-TDN

Chiefs wallop Sundowns to extend their lead

By Obakeng Maje
Pretoria- Kaizer Chiefs extended their lead after they thumped Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 in a league match at Loftus Versfeld on Thursday.

The battle between the top of the table turned out to be one of the best matches dished out by PSL teams so far as the game started like the blazing fire.

Sundowns took the game to the visitors in the first minutes with that keen of finding an early goal. Kaizer Chiefs defence was buoyed and kept things water-tight at the back.

Sundowns illustrious midfielder Teko Modise unleashed a thunderbolt after receiving a telling pass from Kama Billiat. His shot hit a crossbar and hit Chiefs goalie Itumeleng Khune on the back, but the ball went outside.

Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs defender Tshepo Masilela was brought down by Wayne Arendse after he launched an attack on Sundowns defence.

The free-kick resulted into an own goal after Chiefs striker, Parker’s ball deflected by Wayne Arendse.

Chloorkop-based team started to detonates more attacks in search for an equaliser, but to no avails. Athony Laffor and Modise ochestrated some moves in the middle of the park, but defender Eric Mathoho heard none of that as he cleared everything came his way.
Morgan Gould receives a yellow card after he elbowed Bongani Zungu.

Willard Katsande also received marching orders from Victor Hlongwane after a late tackle on Modise.

Sundowns came back strong on a second half and tried to deter Chiefs defence as they put more pressure on them. The game went abreast 20 minutes after the interval as Chiefs found their feet again.

“We played so well and did everything that were supposed to be done. The team is still new and I am very pround of my players as Chiefs players have be together for more than two years” Mosimane outlines.

Chiefs Musona’ shot was well-saved by Kennedy Muwanee after he received a pass from Simphiwe Tshabalala who came in for Parker. Sundowns brought in Cuthbeth Malajila who was unlucky after his shot went over the bar with only Khune to beat after a rebound.

Mashego’ shot was blocked by Gould and followed by Laffor’s diving header.

Bongani Zungu was a thorn on Kaizer Chiefs flesh as he mesmerised their defence, but Chiefs kept afloat.

The game nearly got out of hand as more tackles were flying with only referee watching. Mashamaite was brought in after Gaxa ruled out with groin injury. Baxter bolster his defence by bring in Letsholonyane to help Katsande.

Pitso Mosimane brought in Suprise Moriri to have more arsenal in front of goals, but that was never meant to be.

Kaizer Chiefs accumulate three points and stretch their lead, however Sundowns still have a game in hand.

“We played one of the best teams and Sundowns are also on top of the table, so I am very happy for getting a seventh straight win.” said Baxter.

George Lebese scooped man of the match award.-TDN
