Two protesters killed in Brits


Brits – Two protesters were shot dead and two were wounded during a service delivery protest in Brits on Monday, North West police said.

Police were called to monitor protesters after they barricaded a road with burning tyres, said Colonel Sabata Mokgobone.

Residents started protesting on Sunday afternoon about a water shortage in Brits.

Details of the shooting were not clear, Mokgobone said. – Sapa


Katlego Mphela’s agent, Glyn Binkin, has responded angrily to Mamelodi Sundowns’ claims that he is trying to destabilise the club.

Sundowns published an article on their website stating that Binkin was trying to mislead the public and destabilise Sundowns ahead of Mphela’s imminent exit to join Kaizer Chiefs at the end of the season.

A teen beaten to death: cop arrested


Johannesburg – Makhosana Kasi was beaten to death, allegedly by an off-duty metro police officer, for carrying a two-plate stove.

He and a friend had been walking home from a funeral vigil.

The Joburg metro police officer was to appear in court on Monday for allegedly beating the 17-year-old to death and assaulting his best friend.

Kimberley man arrested after burning a kid to death

Kimberley-A reported missing boy Thabang Macqueena’s body found on Sunday at about 09:00 burned and dumped into a trench, in Phakedi Street, Galeshewe, near Kimberley.

“A 27-year-old father of the baby boy has been arrested and charged with murder. Our preliminary investigation indicates that a 1-year-old Thabang may possibly have been murdered on Thursday, and reporting him missing on Friday, 10 January 2014 was just a strategy to deceive the police investigation” liutenant Sergio Kock.

The arrest of the father resulted after Thabang’s mother hinted the police that the father had actually fabricated the story with regard to the report made about Thabang’s missing.

“Thabang was wrapped in a towel and burned not far away from their house in Phakedi Street. The body was in a state of decomposition, and it is the smell that attracted the inquisitiveness community people. The community contacted the police after the gruesome discovery” said Kock.

The father will appear before the Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court Monday on a charge of murder.-TDN

Basetsana return from Nigeria


The South African U20 Women’s National team (Basetsana) returned from Nigeria on Monday (13 January) following their 6-0 loss to the West Africans in the third round, first leg FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifier played on Saturday, 11 January at the National Stadium in Abuja.

The return leg match will be played on Saturday, 25 January at a venue still to be confirmed. That match will determine one of the two African nations that will qualify for the 2014 edition of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup to be staged in Canada from 5 – 24 August later this year.-TDN

One died in a fatal accident near Madibogo

Madibogo-A case of Culpable Homicide is being investigated after a motor vehicle (Ford Ranger) overturned on Saturday at about 01:30 in Madibogo village.

North West police said that the car was travelling from Motsitlane village after the driver lost control, and it overturned and capsized.

“The police and paramedics were summoned to the scene where it was discovered one of the passengers, a 32-year-old man died on the scene.  The other car occupants were taken to Ratlou Health Centre for medical treatment” concludes colonel Sabata Mokgwabone. Investigation continues.-TDN

A North West man beaten to death over cellphone

Sun City-Police arrested 7 suspects with age between 21 to 42 for alleged murder of a 26-year-old man on Saturday.

The incident occurred at approximately 00:30 at Letlhabile section, Ledig village near Sun City. 

“It is alleged that the victim was with his friend when the accused assaulted them with sjamboks for alleged theft. They accused the victim for stealing a cellular phone” said colonel Sabata Mokgwabone.

According to the report, one of the victims managed to escape and fled while the other was taken to Moses Kotane hospital by an ambulance after a severe assault. The police were later called and informed that the victim died.

The police launched a man-hunt for the suspects and that led to their apprehension through assistance and pointing by the other victim. The suspects, 3 females and 4 males are expected to appear in Mogwase Magistrates’ Court soon.-TDN
