DA concerned at credibility of matric results

Johannesburg-The DA congratulates all matrics who passed the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations and achieved the goals they set themselves.

“We also pay tribute to the many great teachers who go the extra mile to help our country’s children succeed” said DA Annette Lovemore.

The DA however is concerned at the credibility of the matric results announced this evening by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga.

“Using the pass rate as the main yardstick to assess performance is simply not a credible measure of the quality of education. This is a view shared by more and more education policy experts in our country” Lovemore said.

DA said the problem with focusing on the pass rate is that it does not take into consideration the number of students who drop out of the system before they write the National Senior Certificate examinations.

“Focusing on the pass rate also masks other crucial indicators of learner performance such as the number qualifying for tertiary education, the quality of passes and the number of maths and science passes”.

Lovemore said some may view the matric results announced tonight as a cause for celebration, but DA believe they are a cause for concern.

“In particular, we believe that the spike in some province’s pass rates may be as a result of factors other than improved learner performance” said DA.

“We will be studying the results in more detail before issuing further comment” concludes Lovemore.-TDN

Mokeke called up as Igesund again thanks South Africans for support

Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund has called up rising Ajax Cape Town defender Thato Mokeke to replace the injured Tsepo Masilela of Kaizer Chiefs in the squad to play the Orange CAF African Nations Championship (South Africa 2014).

Mokeke is expected to join up with his compatriots tonight

(Monday, 6 January 2014) at their base camp in Cape Town as he is based in the Mother City.

“Ï am very happy I now have a full squad to work with. Thato is a young and very good player. We have been keeping an eye on him for quite some time and I believe he will add to the competitiveness within the squad.

“We also need to thank coach Muhsin Ertugral and every Ajax staff member for the cooperation in assisting with the release of the player. Now the focus will be on the playing field as we continue with our preparations,” said Igesund.

Mokeke will have his first training session with the squad on Tuesday, 7 January 2014.

Meanwhile, Igesund had a chance to work out with the full compliment of his team for the first time in wet Cape Town conditions on Monday afternoon following the arrival in camp of the Kaizer Chiefs quartet of Tefu Mashamaite, Bernard Parker, Siphiwe Tshabalala and Itumeleng Khune as well as Moeneeb Josephs of Bidvest Wits.

”Today is the first time I was able to work with the full squad and the vibe is very good. I am very pleased. Now we can focus on the job at hand. It’s now all systems go,” added Igesund who again praised all and sundry for the support he has received in the release of the players to the national team.

“I am very humbled by the support I got from people of South Africa including the entire SAFA executive headed by President, Dr Danny Jordaan and CEO, Dennis Mumble.

“I also want to thank all clubs that released their players especially Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns considering their respective positions on the league log. That was a huge sacrifice. To coaches Stuart Baxter and Pitso Mosimane; your patriotism is unflinching.”

Igesund said the team was going into the tournament with their spirits sky high knowing the entire country was behind them.

“It is a good feeling; great feeling to know 50 million South Africans are behind us,” he concluded.-TDN

Basetsana step up preparations for Nigeria

The South African U20 Women’s National team (Basetsana) have vowed to up their antic when they take on Nigeria in the third and final round of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers Canada 2014.

Basetsana are among four African countries that will battle for two spots on the continent that will join the last 14 at the 2014 Edition of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup that will be staged between 5-24 August later this year.

Basetsana know what is at stake and will be looking to carry a positive mental attitude when they travel to the Nigeria on Thursday (9 January) for the first leg encounter that will be played at the National Stadium in Abuja on Saturday, 11 January.

Kick-off is at 16h00 local time in Nigeria (15h00 South African time).

Coming from a 9-1 aggregate win over Tanzania in the second round, head coach Sheryl Botes feels this weeks’ preparations are crucial as they look to progress past the third round and book a historic spot for the World Cup.

Basetsana mentor has assembled a strong squad of 18 players preparing for the crucial first leg qualifier at Edenvale Football Grounds and are of the opinion that preparations have been going well since the team started training on Saturday (4 January).

“Preparations have been going well since the girls came together on Saturday. We all know the importance of being in top condition for the match against Nigeria.

“We know it’s going to be a physical encounter, probably more physical than what we faced in Tanzania but we need to be prepared for any situation. The mood in camp is high and the girls want to do well against Nigeria,” said Botes.

Basetsana will be without the services of High Performance Centre left-winger, Gabriella Salgado who has a recurring muscle injury and USA based forward, Robyn Moodaly who will be travelling back to the US due to study commitments.

“We are hoping to get everything right by the time we leave for Nigeria on Thursday. With the home ground advantage on Nigeria’s side, they will obviously be looking to start off positively but we want to contain them and hopefully squeeze in an away goal.

“We unfortunately had to exclude Gaby from the squad as she recovering from a recurring muscle injury but we brought in Chamelle, who will still be assessed to determine her readiness for the match. We want to do well against Nigeria and qualify for the World Cup. It would be good for the country,” said the Basetsana mentor.

The South Africans will return on Monday, 13 January 2014.

Premier Modise commends arrest of six policemen for alleged involvement in business robberies

Ruatenburg- The arrest of six North West policemen for allegations of involvement in business robberies around Rustenburg should restore the confidence of the public in the ability of the police to cleanse themselves of rogue elements within the police service, Premier Thandi Modise said on Monday.

“The involvement of police in crime undermines the confidence that the public has on law enforcement hence we commend intensified efforts to uproot elements within the police service involved in crime. There should be no place in the police service for those who run with the hares and hunt with the hounds,” said Premier Modise in commenting police for the arrests.
Modise said that the arrests of four Tlhabane detectives and two crime intelligence officers who appeared in the Rustenburg Magistrate Court on Monday after their arrest in two unrelated cases separate incidents over the weekend marks the highlight of the success of the festive season operation duty calls which did not give criminals breathing space.

The six were remanded in police custody pending their next court appearance for formal bail application.

Meanwhile, Premier Modise has also called for an investigation into the circumstance surrounding the accidental shooting of a member of the police service by a colleague during a raid at a robbery suspect’s house in Lefaragatlhe near Tlhabane.-TDN
