Creche teacher killed in front of kids

Durban – A northern KwaZulu-Natal pre-school teacher was stabbed in front of her pupils last week.

 

Zandile Gumede, 41, a teacher at Solwazi Crèche, in KwaMduku near Hluhluwe, was walking to school with some of her pupils last Wednesday when she was attacked.

 

A woman is due to appear in court on Monday in connection with the murder.

 

Gumede’s relatives were alerted by her pupils, some as young as three, that she had been attacked.

 

Her nephew, Vukani Sibiya, said they were crying hysterically and had to be calmed down before they could tell them what had happened.

 

“One of the older kids, who is five years old, told us that a man was following them and attacked my aunt from behind,” Sibiya said.

 

Policey confirmed the incident on Sunday, saying a woman had been arrested.

 

Provincial police spokesman, Colonel Jay Naicker, said the 32-year-old woman had been charged with murder and is expected to appear in Obonjeni Magistrate’s Court today.

 

Police would not reveal how the woman was linked to the case as it is believed a man was responsiible for the murder.

 

Recalling events which led to the attack, Sibiya said Gumede, who had taught at the crèche for a year, had left for work at about 6.30am with pupils, who are her neighbours’ children.

 

Sibiya said the children had told the family that Gumede had stopped when she noticed a man following them.

 

“The kids told us that my aunt had asked the man if she could help him as he had been following them and he said he was looking for his sheep,” he said.

 

Gumede continued walking and was then attacked.

 

“The kids said the man attacked my aunt with a knife from behind.

 

“They said he stabbed her several times,” he said.

 

The traumatised children ran back to Gumede’s house, where they informed her relatives.

 

“They were just crying and we couldn’t understand a word of what they were saying, but one of the older kids told us a man had killed their teacher,” Sibiya said.

 

Relatives rushed to the scene where they found Gumede’s body.

 

“She had so many stab wounds and her throat had been slit.”

Motshekga disappoint about leaked sms

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said on Monday she was disappointed that a private conversation between her and First Rand Bank CEO Sizwe Nxasana was leaked to the media.

 

“We distance ourselves from this leak because it is a serious matter and we will approach the relevant security agencies to investigate,” Motshekga said in a statement.

 

“We apologies [sic] to Mr Nxasana for the mishap.”

 

The Sunday Times reported that Nxasana sent an sms to Motshekga on Monday after a child called her “brainless” in one of its “You Can Help” videos.

 

“Good Morning Minister. I have instructed FNB to remove the video clips from their website this morning. I will investigate how and why the clips ended [up] on their website. Sincere apologies for this. Sizwe,” the sms read.

 

The FNB campaign features a number of videos of children in school uniform reading their hopes for the country. Opposition parties and activist groups said the ANC’s criticism of the campaign showed its intolerance.

 

FNB met with African National Congress leaders, including secretary-general Gwede Mantashe, on Thursday. The bank apologised to the ANC on Friday.

A BMW driver died in an accident

MAHIKENG:  Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide following an accident that happened on Saturday.

“It is alleged that at about 15:30, deceased was driving alone in a white BMW 3-Series along Ramatlabama- Mahikeng road” Sam Tselanyane said.  

“The deceased lost control over his vehicle near Miga and it overturned” He said.  

The deceased’s body was trapped inside the vehicle and was certified dead on the scene.  

The cause of the accident is unknown and police are investigating. 

A 41 year old man arrested for killing ex

Schweize Reneke- North West police arrested a 41 year-old man after he allegedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend to death in Ipelegeng,near Schweize Reneke.

According to information received,a suspect and the deceased were staying together until their relationship went sour.

“A 41 year-old man allegedly approached a woman after she alighted from a taxi” Warrant Officer Tselanyane said.

“He allegedly stabbed a woman without saying a word. And his ex was declared dead on the scene by paramedics” Tselanyane said.

The woman bled profusely and died from stabbing injuries.

The police found a suspect beneath the tree few miles from the scene. He was allegedly taken back to the crime scene and started to vomit.

Police rushed him to a local hospital and it was confirmed that he drunk a battery acid trying to take his own life.

The suspect is under a police chattered eye and will appear before Schweize-Reneke Magistrate Court soon.

A baby(2) hacked to death in jouberton

JOUBERTON:  A 25-year-old man in Jouberton extension 12 near Klerksdorp was arrested by the police after he allegedly hacked a two year-old boy to death. 

It is alleged that on Friday at about 20:30 the mother of a child and her boyfriend suspect had an argument at the nearby tavern.  

“The argument led to a fight and the suspect allegedly left the tavern and the mother followed him” Warrant Officer Sam Tselane said. The suspect allegedly kidnapped a child and the search for the baby ensued.

“The police managed to locate the suspect and question him about the baby” Tselane said.

He told the police where the baby is.

The tiny body of a baby was found in a bucket at the toilet with a head injuries sustained.

“The suspect was arrested and will appear tomorrow before magistrate for murder.

SAFA President congratulates Bafana

Durban-SAFA President, Kirsten Nematandani has heaped praise on coach Gordon Igesund and his gallant Bafana Bafana side for reaching the quarter-finals of the 

 

2013 AFCON tournament saying the Senior National Men’s Team had done the country proud.

 

“You have brought pride and honour to the nation and today you have written a piece of history for yourselves, families and friends. You deserve to walk tall. You showed the entire football world that you have the fighting spirit and that the adage ‘it is never over until the fat lady sings’ is a true expression of competitive soccer games.

 

“We are confident that this achievement will now spur you to go all the way in this tournament. The entire country is behind you; their support and spirit will carry you all the way,” said an elated Nematandani.

 

Bafana drew 2-2 with Morocco to seal their place in the quarter-finals. They finished top of Group A ahead of Cape Verde on goal difference. They will remain in Durban for the last eight match.

 

Moses Mabhida stadium has been a happy hunting ground for Bafana Bafana where they are yet to lose a competitive match in the majestic stadium.

 

 

 

 

A 21 year-old girl raped

HEBRON:  Police arrested two of the three suspects who allegedly raped a 21-year-old woman in Hebron North West police said.  

“It is alleged that on Friday at about 18:00, the victim was with her friend at a local Butchery drinking beer” Warrant Officer Sam Tselanyane said.  

They were joined by the three suspects who drunk together with them.  

A 21 year-old girl went to the toilet and while inside the toilet, she was surprised by the three suspects who threatened her and assaulted her with open hands.  

“All three suspects raped her by taking turns.Police were informed and two of the three suspects were later arrested” Tselanyane said.  “The two suspects, aged 17 and 19 respectively are expected to appear before the Garankuwa Magistrate Court on Monday” He adds.

They were charged with rape and a 17-year-old minor was released with a warning under parental care.  The third suspect is still at large and the Police are still looking.  Investigation continues.

South Africa twice came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw with Morocco to top Group A and qualify for the quarter-finals of Afcon 2013.

Issam El Adoua gave the Lions of Atlas the lead of half-time, but May Mahlangu brought the hosts back into the match. Abdelilah Hafidi then put the Moroccans up again, but Siyabonga Sangweni netted four minutes from time to secure the point.

In the other Group A match, Cape Verde secured a late 2-1 over Angola to ensure they also reached the knockout stages along with Bafana.

Bafana were under pressure early on as Itumeleng Khune was called upon to make multiple saves while the defensive duo of Bongani Khumalo and Siyabonga Sangweni were kept busy. Despite two calls for penalties denied as Thuso Phala and Tokelo Rantie went down in the Moroccan area, it was the visitors who went ahead as El Adoua turned in a corner on ten minutes.

Khune was again called on to keep the ball out when another shot from Chahir Belghazouani came desperately close to sneaking in.

Just before the half-hour Bafana came close when Phala went storming into the crossed to Bernard Parker, but the final shot sprayed across the face of goal.

Rantie then went on a brilliant counter attack with acres of space on the left, but with two players waiting in the centre, the final pass lacked any conviction and the Lions of Atlas were able to clear the danger.

With half-time looming Khune produced a sensational piece of goalkeeping as he thwarted the effort of an onrushing Kamel Chafni who expertly beat the offside trap.

After the break Bafana came out with new energy and nearly bagged an equaliser, but Phala’s superb free-kick was just turned around the corner by Nadir Lamyaghri.

Khune then again kept his team alive with a telling save when he found himself one-on-one with Youssef El-Arabi and managed to get a hand on the final shot.

With 19 minutes to play the Moses Mabhida Stadium erupted as May Mahlangu got the ball on the edge of the area and picked his spot before curling it into the corner for the vital equaliser.

But the Moroccans regained their lead shortly after when substitute Abdelilah Hafidi smashed the ball past Khune from close range.

The unlikely figure of Siybonya Sangweni then beat the offside trap with four minutes to play and with all the time in the world, the Orlando Pirates defender netted his second goal in as many matches to make it 2-2 giving his team the vital point as they held on for the draw.

Standard Bank Moment of the game. With just four minutes remaining on the clock, the surprise figure of Siyabonga Sangweni found himself with a shot at goal from the edge of the area and buried it with the finesse of an international striker to give his country a well-deserved 2-2 draw, sending the Moroccans out of the tournament.

A girl(3) dies in a “head on” collision

A three-year-old girl has died and other six people were injured in a head-on collision in Kwa Mashu north of Durban on Sunday, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said the three -year-old-girl , her father and mother were found in a critical condition.

 

“Medics immediately started to resuscitate the child but tragically she died on scene.”

 

He said four other people were found to have sustained serious injuries.

 

The injured were taken to hospital.

Announcement on Amplats expected

A formal announcement on whether talks over Anglo American Platinum’s (Amplats) planned retrenchment of nearly 14 000 mineworkers had succeeded in saving jobs is expected tomorrow.

 

The meeting followed discussions on Thursday, between the company and Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu.

 

“[The] meeting received suggestions on a number of interventions,” Mineral Resources spokesperson Zingaphi Jakuja said.

 

“Amplats has been allowed space to consult internally on these and a formal pronouncement will be made on Monday by the stakeholders.”

 

Amplats declined to comment to the outcomes of the meeting.

 

Earlier in January, Amplats said it planned a restructuring that could lead to the retrenchment of 14 000 workers. About 13 000 of them were from Rustenburg, in the North West.
