We will win a battle against rhino poaching- Modise

Image

Department of Environmental Affairs spokesperson, Albi Modise, says it may look like they are losing the war against rhino poaching but they will win the battle.

Speaking on SAFM AM Live with Xolani Gwala, Modise said they are working hard to fight rhino poaching and are discussing with other countries who are involved to stop poaching South African rhinos.

The number of rhinos poached in South Africa since the beginning of the year has increased to 249. The Department of Environmental Affairs says the Kruger National Park remains the hardest hit. Last week, the number of poached rhinos increased from a 167 to a 180.

Drugs found on Bieber’s tour bus-reports

Image

Stockholm – Singer Justin Bieber on Thursday seemed to shrug off the latest controversy surrounding his European tour after Swedish police said they had found drugs on his tour bus, but could not link them to any single person.

Bieber, 19, has made headlines in the past two months for showing up late for his own London concert, walking shirtless through airport security in Poland, posting a cartoon of himself in bed with a young woman, and expressing the hope that Holocaust victim Anne Frank would have been a “belieber” like his millions of fans.

On Thursday, Swedish police said an officer smelled marijuana on an empty tour bus outside the hotel where Bieber was staying before his Stockholm concert on Wednesday.

They said they found a small amount of drugs, but had no suspects and did not plan further action.

“Some of the rumours about me… Where do people even get this stuff. Whatever… Back to the music,” Bieber tweeted on Thursday to his 38 million Twitter followers after announcing he had arrived in Finland.

Representatives of the Canadian singer, who started his career as a squeaky-clean 15-year-old, had no comment.

In Stockholm, police spokesperson Kjell Lindgren said the drugs were being sent for analysis. “We don’t know who had the drugs or who smoked them, so it will be hard to link them with any individual,” Lindgren said.

Bieber has been on the road with barely a break since September 2012 on his Believe world tour, where he has been greeted by screaming young girls and blaring headlines for some bizarre behaviour.

In March, he abandoned a pet monkey at Munich airport because he did not have the right papers, and flew back to Los Angeles for 36 hours and into an altercation with a neighbour.

Last week, he came under fire in the media on grounds of taste after he wrote in a guest book at the Anne Frank museum in Amsterdam that the 15-year-old Holocaust victim and diarist was inspiring and “hopefully she would have been a belieber”.

The museum later defended Bieber, saying they were delighted he had visited and that his comments were innocent. – Reuters

Taung-FORMER North West MEC for health and social development Rebecca Onewang Kasienyane, who died at Mafikeng Hospital last Sunday after an illness, will be buried at Lokaleng village in Taung tomorrow.

Kasienyane, pictured, who had a rich history in participating in the struggle to liberate South Africa from apartheid, was born in Taung on March 7 1952.

At the time of her death, she was serving in the North West provincial legislature as the chairwoman of the portfolio committee on economic development and tourism.

“We are saddened by the loss of this humble human being, who was my predecessor and a dear fellow comrade in the ANC,” current provincial health and social development MEC Magome Masike said this week.

“She laid the ground for the good work that we continue to do to improve the health of our people. We share the loss that is deeply felt by the family and hope that they will find solace in knowing that God is with them.”

North West legislature spokesman Mongezi Tsenca said: “We mourn the untimely death of this dedicated servant of the people. May her soul rest in peace, knowing that many will pick up her spear and continue with the struggle until all our people have a better life.

“We dip our banners in memory of this gallant fighter for our people’s liberation.”

Kenny Morolong, spokesman for the ANC in North West, said: “We will remember her for her sound political leadership, maturity and her unflinching passion to improve the lives of our people.

“She was one of the most reliable cadres of our movement, who carried herself with integrity, dignity, humility, discipline and respect.

“Throughout her political activism Kasienyane displayed profound qualities of a revolutionary cadre, who placed the interests of our movement above her own.”

Kasienyane, affectionately known as Sis Ribs, was sworn in as a member of the provincial legislature on May 6 2009.

She joined the ANC’s underground activities in 1987, and later became the chairwoman of the ANC Lokaleng branch and deputy chairwoman of the ANC Women’s League in the Northern Cape region in 1993.

She was also the ANC’s provincial executive council member in Northern Cape from 1994 to 1996.

Kasienyane became the treasurer for the ANC’s then Bophirima region in North West from 1996 to 2001, before joining the ANC Women’s League’s provincial executive committee from 2001 to 2004.

She served as the ANC Women’s League national executive committee member from 2003 to 2007, later the ANC’s deputy chairwoman for the Bophirima region from 2005 to 2007.

Kasienyane was a provincial coordinator for the Women’s National Coalition from 1993 until 1994, when she became a monitor for the Independent Electoral Commission for the first democratic elections in South Africa.

She later became a councillor in the Bophirima district council from 1995 to 1999.

She was elected as a member of Parliament, serving in the portfolio committees for social development and agriculture from 1999 to 2004.

In 2008, Kasienyane was elected to the ANC North West’s provincial executive council as the party’s treasurer.

After the 2009 national elections, Kasienyane served as the provincial health and social development MEC until 2010.

Armed Robbery condemned by Sanco

The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) in the province has called on the SAPS authorities considering to dismiss two police suspects arrested for armed robbery on their arrival in Mahikeng from Mareetsane on Monday.

“Robbery has an element of dishonesty, which warrants dismissal from public office and must be set as a deterrent factor against those with the same modus operandi in the service. We condemn misconduct and applaud the team of policemen who arrested the suspects,” Sanco’s Packet Seaketso said.
