No bail for teen’s rape suspect-Premier Modise


North West Premier Thandi Modise has called for no bail for the man accused of raping a 14 year old girl. The suspect who appeared in court on Monday is to appear again in the Ventersdorp Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

 

In condemning the alleged rape in the strongest terms possible, Premier Modise said that it is sad that 80% of perpetrators of rape are known to their victims and that children who had been taught to trust and obey adults are raped by male adults who are known to them. 

“We call on real men need to stand up to be counted against the scourge of rape. We need to unite in action and intensify the Million Signature Anti-rape campaign to ensure that women and children are safer in their homes and in our neighbourhoods,” highlighted Modise.

   

According to police, the girl was visiting her aunt, who stayed in a rented house in the 34-year-old man’s yard.

Captain Pelonomi Makau said that the man is alleged to have called the girl to his bedroom on Friday morning and asked her to iron his clothes. He reportedly then grabbed her and raped her.-TDN

A girl,14, raped in Ventersdorp

VENTERSDORP-Police are investigating a case of rape after 14 year-old victim was allegedly raped by a 34 year-old accused at Tshing Township in Ventersdorp.

“The accused appeared in Ventersdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday. He is still in custody and will appear again on 31 December 2013 for legal representation” captain Pelonomi Makau said. 

The victim from Biesiesvlei allegedly visited her aunt who stays in a rented house from the suspect. It is alleged that in the morning of the alleged rape, the suspect called the victim to his bedroom and asked her to iron his clothes”

“It is alleged that the accused grabbed the victim and allegedly raped her” Makau said.

Zuma’s Nkandla party ended in tragedy


Pietermaritzburg – President Jacob Zuma’s annual Christmas party for the elderly at Nkandla on Friday ended tragically when a woman died after uninvited guests caused a stampede while clamouring for gifts.

Thembekile Ntombizamani Shangase, 61, was apparently lining up to receive her gift pack when people started pushing and they fell on top of her.

Hofmeyr back in court for speeding


Johannesburg –  Afrikaans singer Steve Hofmeyr is expected to appear in the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of reckless and negligent driving and exceeding the general speed limit.
Hofmeyr was arrested in Bronkhorstspruit on the night of 19 December for speeding, and was released on bail of R500.
At the time, Gauteng traffic police spokeswoman Busaphi Nxumalo said Hofmeyr was caught driving at 169km/h in an 80km/h zone.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page a day after his arrest, Hofmeyr said it was irresponsible to speed.
“I concede this was irresponsible and dangerous.”
He also complimented the police officers who dealt with him, describing them as “friendly, professional and thorough” and thanked those who were on duty.
Last Monday, there was confusion about the court appearance date for Hofmeyr, with police believing he would appear that day.
However the National Prosecuting Authority clarified that he would in fact be appearing on the last Monday of the month.

Polokwane – A 44-year-old man killed his girlfriend and four children in Tlou village, Ga-Matlala, Limpopo police said on Sunday.

The 34-year-old woman and four children, aged between two months and five-years, were found with open wounds to their necks on Sunday morning, said Colonel Ronel Otto.

She said it was not known whose children they were.

The man was found unconscious, and was now under police guard in Knobel hospital. He was thought to have tried to commit suicide by taking poison, said Otto.

Police were investigating.

Two perish in “head-on” collision

Potchefstroom-Police are investigating a case of Culpable Homicide after a 55 year-old driver of a Toyota Corolla collided with a 31 year-old driver of a motorbike on N12 road between Potchefstroom and Stilfontein on Thursday at about 11:30.

Captain Pelonomi Makau said the driver of the Toyota Corolla allegedly tried to enter at the intersection at Machavie crossing from the nearby farms when the motorbike driver who was driving on N12 from Potchefstroom to Klerksdorp knocked his vehicle.

“It is alleged that both drivers died on the scene. The driver of the Toyota Corolla had two passengers with him and the driver of the motorbike had a passenger with him. Both passengers from the motor vehicle and the motorbike were transported to the hospital with injuries” captain Pelonomi Maku said.

According to the information, the passengers from the vehicle were later discharged and the motorbike passenger is still in hospital with serious injuries.

Modise: Women are too vulnerable

Women should avoid high risk places that could increase their vulnerability such as shebeens and pubs since many perpetrators of sexual violence target women who were either drunk or who asked for lifts from strangers, North West Premier Thandi Modise appealed in condemning the rape of a 25-year- old woman from Hartbeesfontein on Wednesday.

 

“The rape of the woman at a cemetery is a deplorable act that was committed by heartless individuals who have no conscience. We call on police not to leave any stone unturned until those responsible are removed from society and for the community to assist police in their investigations,” stressed Premier Modise.

In calling for united action against the scourge of rape which has victimised close to 50 women in the province since the start of the festive season, Modise said that young girls and women could assist reduce incidents by carefully considering those that they choose to go out with at night and the places they go to for entertainment given that not even infants are safe from sexual violence.

According to police, the young woman was raped twice at Tigane cemetery by two men around 00:30 on Christmas eve.”It is alleged that the victim was with [her] boyfriend on their way to the victim’s home when they were confronted by two suspects wearing balaclavas,” said Captain Pelonomi Makau.The suspects are alleged to have threatened them with an unknown sharp object.The couple attempted to run away from the men but then the woman fell. She was grabbed by the men who took her to the cemetery and took turns raping her.”They took her cell phone before they fled the scene,” said Makau.”After this ordeal, the victim managed to report the incident to the police station.”She was later taken to the hospital. Police were searching for the men.

Madibogo murder accused arrested

The arrest of four people in connection with the murder of a man found dead in Tlhaping village on Christmas day confirms that partnership between police and communities is critical for the war against crime and lawlessness to be won, North West Premier said on Thursday.

 

 

 

“We wish to commend members of the public for providing the tip-off that led to the prompt arrest of the suspects and call for the partnership in support of operation duty calls festive season campaign to be strengthened to reduce opportunistic crime in all of our communities, ” stressed Premier Modise 

 

 

 

According to police, the dead man was found naked and appeared to have been assaulted. 

 

“According to the information the victim was seen by passers-by who informed the police,” said Captain Pelonomi Makau.

 

“The victim’s face was badly swollen. The motive of the assault is unknown.”

 

Police received a tip-off which led to the arrest of a man at a local tavern on Wednesday.

 

“He led the police to the arrest of the other three,” said Makau.

 

The men were expected to appear in the Atamelang Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

 

In another breakthrough, three men were arrested for the murder of a man from Sondela informal settlement in Boitekong near Rustenburg.According to police,the men aged between 22 and 40, were arrested on Wednesday around 11am and charged with murder.“It is alleged that a 30-year-old victim from Sondela township was on his way home when he was confronted by the suspects and they had an argument,” 

 

Captain Pelonomi Makau said. 

 

Makau said the man was stabbed in the back and his left hand.

 

 

 

The cause of the argument was not clear.

 

 

 

They would also appear in the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday on murder charges.-TDN

A 10 year-old girl accidentally kills mom with air rifle

Johannesburg – A 10-year-old girl accidentally shot and killed her mother with an air rifle her brother got as a Christmas present, Beeld reported on Friday.

The 45-year-old woman died in a Cape Town hospital on Christmas eve, following the accident in Oude Westhoff, Bellville.

 

The rifle was a Chrismas present for the girl’s older brother.

 

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel André Traut told Beeld they were investigating.
