Cokonyane alleged serial rapist remains in custody

Taung-A case of Cokonyane alleged serial rapist and murderer Gaopalelwe Sedimo,21, was postponed for further investigations.

Sedimo was arrested after he allegedly raped, kidnapped a 16 year-old girl, Tsholofelo Thobi and allegedly murdered her grandfather Joseph Thobi,56.

Police said Sedimo allegedly visited Thobi’s family on Saturday prior the atrocity. He allegedly sat with Joseph Thobi under the tree and chat.
On Sunday the following day, Sedimo allegedly came to the house and tried to enter Tsholofelo Thobi’s shanty where she was sleeping.

Police said Tsholofelo was allegedly sitting with her grandfather Joseph Thobi at his bedroom and left at around 00:15 to go and sleep. She allegedly heard someone on top of the shanty trying to remove corrugated iron to gain entrance.

She allegedly screamed after she swa Sedimo’face.

Tsholofelo said she screamed for help and heard someone talking to her grandfather few minutes afterwards.

It was alleged that Sedimo kicked opened the Shanty’s door opened and kidnapped Tsholofelo and stabbed her with a knife.

Sedimo took Tsholofelo to his residential area where rape took place, according to Investigating Officer, Solomon Kagisho Phemelo.

Phemelo said Sedimo allegedly stabbed the victim two times on a shoulder and locked her up in the bedroom. Tsholofelo allegedly escape from Sedimo’s bedroom through the window and was taken home by the suspect’s father.

Police said Tsholofelo found people gathered at her home and was told that Joseph Thobi was allegedly stabbed to death.

However Sedimo’s lawyer refutes the claim that connect Sedimo with murder, kidnapping and rape.

Loeto Ikanyeng said his client will plead not guilty on all charges. He said Sedimo and Tsholofelo allegedly had cosensual sex and were lovers and still are.

Ikanyeng claims that Sedimo did not stab nor kill the grandfather and he will elaborates more during trial.

He argues that Sedimo must be granted bail as he is no threat to anyone including the victim. Ikanyeng said Sedimo will relocates to another area and will not bother nor interfer with investigations.

Sedimo’skeletons came out of the closet like dinosaurs fleeing Juriseen park as his two separated pending case were brought forward.

The Cokonyane-born man was remanded in custody and will appear back in court on 08 January 2014.

Sedimo will not plead guilty on all charges.

Taung taxi owner to spend Christmas and New year in custody

Taung-A case of Taung prominent taxi owner Xolani Lloyd Nkonyane was postponed for formal bail application.

The court postponed the case against Nkonyane after the investigating officer lieutenant Medupe did not appear before court as he was committed in other matters.

The despondent family of Nkonyane left court with tears as the lawyer could not convince the magistrate why Nkonyane must granted bail.

His lawyer Nakale argues that his client is not flight risk and said Nkonyane has assets worth a R1m.

He said a 34 year-old suspect has a child whom he is taking care of financial, so if he is not granted bail, his business interest suffers.

Nkonyane alleged owns taxi, livestock, catering and welding companies.

He was subsequently arrested in connection of business robbery and and attempted murder in Molelema village, near Taung.

Nkonyane was cornered at Picong village,almost 30km away from the crime scene. He was allegedly driving a minibus taxi that was used during commission of crime.

Nakale his client was allegedly assaulted during the arrested and his right were compromised.

A chinese shop owner was sunsequently robbed in Molelema village, near Taung three weeks ago and community members allegedly came to the owner’s rescue and chased after suspects.

Five suspects allegedly opened fire at the community members, but no one was injured.

Police were called and a chase continues. Nkonyane and other suspects were cornered, but four suspects managed to escape.

According to Nkonyane, he was allegedly hired to transport people to Molelema village and he was suprised when he was ordered to stop alsmost 30km away from crime scene.

Nkonyane said he was assaulted by contigent of police and was arrested afterwards.

Police never explained why they arrest him and was disappointed to learn about the nature of charges he is facing, said Nkonyane.

The case was postponed for 06 January 2014 for formal bail application and Nkonyane will spend christmas and New year behind bars.

He was previously found guilty in two cases of malicious damage to property and assault.

SAFA, PSL reach compromise for CHAN


The meeting of the SAFA International Affairs Committee which took place on 23 December 2013 has reaffirmed the importance of balancing the need to have a strong team for CHAN 2014 while allowing some Premier Soccer League (PSL) must be played during this period.

 

In this regard, the Committee notes with appreciation, the decision of the League that only five matches will be played during the CHAN tournament.

 

However, after consultation with the League, an agreement was reached that the match between Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs scheduled for 28 January 2014 be brought forward to 23 January 2014, which is a rest period between the last round and quarter final of CHAN.

 

Playing this match in January will alleviate the congestion for Kaizer Chiefs when they commence with their participation in the CAF Champions League.

 

The Committee expresses its gratitude to the League and the affected teams for their positive consideration of the matter.

 

The Committee also noted a report from the Head Coach, Gordon Igesund that he has consulted with all the coaches of the PSL regarding the players selected for CHAN.

 

“I am very pleased with the positive spirit and commitment showed by members of the committee to find practical solutions to these challenges” said Dr Jordaan after the meeting.-TDN

Police shot girlfriend, self dead in North West

Lehurutse-North West police are investigating a case of murder and inquest after a warrant officer allegedly found with a bullet wound through his mouth and his girlfriend dead.

“Police were called after a 53 year-old Warrant Officer Sachs Tlhowe allegedly visited his 42 year-old girlfriend at Welbedacht township, near Lehurutshe” said Brigadier Thulani Ngubane.

Tlhowe allegedly found his girlfriend asleep and went outside with her after he woke her up.

“According police, a passerby later came and informed the victim’s friend that she is lying in the street dead with a bullet in her head” Ngubane said.

Police were called and the investigations led them to the Warrant Officer Tlhowe who was stationed at Mahikeng Organised Crime Unit.

Tlhowe was allegedly found critical with a bullent wound through his mouth.

Ngubane said Tlhowe was allegedly taken to local hospital, but later died.

A case of murder and inquest was registered and investigations continue.-TDN

Magogong village suspect remanded in custody

Taung-A case of Magogong village suspect, Itumeleng Mokgosi was postponed by Taung Magistrate Court after he was allegedly arrested for pointing of a fire-arm.

The incident took place on the 15 December 2013 and according to court, Mokgosi has a previous cases.

He was allegedly arrested for house-breaking, and malicious of damage to property back in 2005.

He was also arrested for assault in 2006.

Mokgosi served a suspended sentence and was granted fine of R800 or four months imprisonment for second offence.

Mokgosi was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on 30 December 2013 for formal bail application.

Igesund announces a 23-man Bafana Bafana squad for CHAN


Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund has announced a 23-man squad to represent South Africa in the 2014 CAF African Nations Champions (CHAN) that kicks off on Saturday, 11 January and will be hosted in three cities – Cape Town, Polokwane and Bloemfontein.

The CHAN tournament is an event for players plying their trade in their domestic league.

Igesund’s men have been pitted against Nigeria, Mali and Mozambique.

“It is just unfortunate that I will not have players from Orlando Pirates, Amazulu and Ajax Cape Town but all in all I am excited that the South African Football Association (SAFA) and the Premier Soccer League (PSL) came to an agreement that works for all parties. It would have been great to have more options but I am not complaining,” said Igesund.

“It is going to be a tough tournament because every team that comes here wants to win and no team is now a pushover in international football. But I can tell you now that we are going to have a very competitive team that will go out there and do their best.“

The Bafana Bafana mentor has also urged fans to buy their tickets for the tournament.

“Ït is important that we have full stadia for the matches as it gives the players an extra boost to do well. We urge all the football fans to come out in numbers to support not only the host nation, but also the tournament in general. With that said, we would also like to pass our gratitude for the support we received during AFCON tournament and over the last few months,” added Igesund.

Bafana Bafana will assemble for camp on Thursday, 02 January 2014 in Cape Town to continue preparations for the tournament.

South Africa will open the tournament with a clash against Mozambique on Saturday, 11 January at the Cape Town Stadium. Kickoff is at 17h00.

There will be 32 matches played in 16 match days.

Two quarterfinals will be held in Cape Town while Mangaung and Polokwane will share the other two.

 

Both semi-final matches will take place in Mangaung with Cape Town hosting third-place play-offs as well as the final.

33 women raped, 972 suspects arrested in North West

North West-Police arrested a total of 972 suspects through various operations in the past seven days between 15 and 22 December 2013 for Contact, Contact related, Property related, trio and other crimes, that includes 206 for Safer Festive Season Operation Duty Calls, colonel Emelda Setlhako said.

“These include 12 for Murder, 33 for Rape,197 for Assault GBH and Assault common, 52 for house robbery, 29 for driving under the influence of liquor and 52 undocumented persons.  The operation also led to confiscation cellphones,computers,ammunitions & firearms” said Setlhako.

In most of the cases, suspects have already appeared in various courts while others are expected to appear on Monday, Monday.-TDN

DA: Allocates Bursaries To Well-Deserving Students

North West-The Democratic Alliance welcomes the NW Government’s announcement promising more that R21million for bursaries to deserving learners from disadvantaged communities. 

“It is essential for the future the province and its economy that a continued investment in our youth is being made” DA Chris Hattingh said.

“However, based on the history of previous NW bursary promises that left students exposed after the government failed to deliver on those promises, the DA will closely monitor the allocation and payout process”.

Hattingh said the DA will monitor the allocation process to ensure that deserving learners are not being overlooked in favour of bursaries to official’s family members, friends and  politically connected people.-TDN
