Jub Jub’s bail bid fails

Image

Convicted murderer Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye is a flight risk and should not be granted bail, the High Court in Johannesburg ruled on Thursday.

“I am convinced that the magistrate exercised his duties accordingly. The application for bail is refused,” Judge Natvarlal Ranchod said.

Maarohanye was asking the court to grant him bail, pending the appeal against his murder conviction and sentence.

He was not in court for the application.

This followed an unsuccessful attempt for bail in the Protea Magistrate’s Court in September. The petition to appeal was filed in the high court in March.

Ranchod said the fact that Maarohanye had approached the investigating officer twice during his trial for the release of his passport so he could travel, indicated that he could leave the country if granted bail.

“He requested the passport to travel instead of applying to the court to relax his bail conditions.”

Maarohanye’s defence failed to provide exceptional circumstances why he should be granted bail, he said.

Maarohanye’s lawyer Rudi Krause said he would take instructions from his client on the way forward.

“I am not disappointed… these things happen. We have not decided what to do yet,” Krause told journalists outside the courtroom.

National Prosecutions Authority spokeswoman Phindi Louw said the State was happy with the outcome and was prepared for the appeal.

Maarohanye and his co-accused Themba Tshabalala were each sentenced in December last year to 20 years imprisonment for murder and four years for attempted murder.

For use of drugs, driving under the influence of drugs, and racing on a public road, they got a year for each count.

Maarohanye and Tshabalala were accused of drag-racing in Protea North on March 8, 2010, when they crashed into a group of schoolboys.

Prince Mohube, Mlungisi Cwayi, Andile Mthombeni, and Phomello Masemola were killed.

FIFA: Bafana Will Get Their Points

Image

Johannesburg-FIFA have confirmed that Bafana Bafana’s 1-0 win over Spain will remain classified as an ‘A’ international and South Africa have been given the spoils for their triumph.

The world governing body said that they had taken into account that both teams had agreed on the conditions of the match, and thus did not see any reasons for the hosts to suffer “negative consequences” as a result.

A statement sent to the Siya crew read, “FIFA can confirm that the South Africa-Spain friendly match of 19 November remains an ‘A’ international, despite the fact that Spain allegedly used more than the maximum of six substitutes that the Laws of the Game stipulate can be used for such a match.

“FIFA have taken into account that both teams had agreed on the conditions of the match and submitted the necessary documentation prior to the match in order for FIFA to confirm it as an ‘A’ international. In this context, South Africa shall not suffer any negative consequences on its part for adhering to the agreed conditions and only using up to a maximum of six substitutes during the match.

“The match shall be considered as an official match and is therefore included in the November edition of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking.

“Regarding the alleged incident of Spain using more than the maximum of six substitutes, FIFA is currently analysing the information at our disposal to assess possible next steps.”

In the latest rankings, on the official FIFA website, Bafana earned 14 points for their recent exploits, and despite the impressive result against the world champions, they remain 61st in the world – though they did jump up a place on the continental rankings from 12th to 11th.

It’s ANC vs ANC in Limpopo as another region goes to court

anc-logo
The Limpopo provincial task team (PTT) has been served with court papers by ANC members from the Mopani region who are challenging the legitimacy of its regional conference after they were disqualified from attending it.

Another matter is still pending in which the ANC was taken to court earlier this month by disgruntled members who had interdicted the Peter Mokaba regional conference, citing flawed processes.

Sources close to the party say delegates from branches in Mopani, which were part of the recent provincial list conference, were “dubiously” excluded from the regional conference and now those members believe the conference and its outcome cannot be legitimate.
