Rustenburg-An accessible computer laboratory that will break barriers in Information Communication Technologies for people with disabilities is to be handed over to the Phokeng in Education School of Excellence Skills Development Centre in Phokeng village outside Rustenburg in the North West Province on Friday.

  

The handover of the laboratory by Deputy Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu and North West Premier Thandi Modise is part of the programme for November Disability Month held under the theme “Breaking Barriers”.

 

“The installation of the computer laboratory that will be used to train people with disabilities in computer literacy in order to bridge the gap on the digital divide and promote sustainable skills development  was made possible by the partnership that the Department of Women, Children and People with Disabilities has established with Cell C” said departmental spokesperson Lesiba Kgwele.

 

The event scheduled to commence at 11:00 am at the centre situated in the Bafokeng Plaza next to Royal Bafokeng Stadium.-TDN

Mike Maphoto, the brain behind the most popular blog-storyline of The Diary of a Zulu girl. 

 

The last time you read about him through this particular platform, Mike was in talks with different media houses to have a hard copy of “The Diary of a Zulu girl” printed out and the possibilities of it being turned into a series. 

 

Well guess what, it was not cheap talk at all, it is very real.  

With the auditions for The Diary of a Zulu girl underway running smoothly, it is expected that by September 2014 South Africa can get the glimpse at the very first episode of season one on their TV sets. 

 

Through the blog Mike has already started on working on season 2 after the epic ending of the first season that ended with a brilliant cliffhanger.  

 

The year following year seems like it is going to be a great year for Mike because by December 2014 the hardcopy of The Diary of a Zulu girl will be available as well. 

 

“I find that the stories that I write are very relevant to the youth. For instance Thandeka (main character of The Diary of a Zulu girl) serves as an eye opener to both the youth and parents what being a first year student at university might be like or even challenges of being in a new big city one comes across” he outlines. 

 

“The blog is a platform for learning and developing ways to avoid unnecessary situations that the youth may find themselves in” Mike giggles.

Bantwana captain Amogelang Motau believes hard work and determination are key factors needed to overcome Zambia in the last leg of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers on Sunday, 24 November.

 

 

 

The South Africa/Zambia clash will be played at the Bidvest Wits Stadium (kick-off: 15h00).

 

 

 

The South Africans look set to be among the 16 participants at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup final to be staged in Costa Rica from 15 March – 5 April 2014.

 

 

 

Bantwana have been in camp the whole week preparing for the return-leg qualifier. The first leg was drawn 3-3 in Zambia two weeks ago.  

 

 

 

Following their 9-0 win against Wits University senior Women’s team in a practice match, Bantwana captain feels preparations are on track for the all-important qualifier on Sunday.

 

 

 

“Things have been going well since we started training on Sunday, which has given us more time to prepare and yesterday we played a practice match against the Wits senior team which went well, we applied all the concepts the coach has been taking us through at training.

 

 

 

“As coach had told us, it always starts with you as an individual in the team, if you work hard and be the best that you can be on the day. We need to make sure we are motivated and play together as a team from the first whistle to keep our World Cup dream alive,” said Motau.

 

 

 

Four new players were introduced to the squad in an effort to strengthen the goalkeeping and midfield areas. Two players were released from camp but Bantwana coach, Sheryl Botes said she would keep them in the system for future national team activities.

 

 

 

“We have been encouraging the new players and realize they are also anxious to come on board and assist us in qualifying for the World Cup. The coach has explained that the bench is as good as the starting eleven, so they have to be at their best on the day,” Motau said.

 

 

 

Bantwana will play their final practice match against the Diambars Academy U16 Boys side at the Sunward Park High School grounds.

 

 

 

“Coming from our game against Wits yesterday, we are confident and motivated. We are looking forward to the match against the boys and will use this exercise to implement what the coach has been teaching us this week.

 

 

 

“We have to work hard on that day, go out there and play our hearts out from the first whistle. We would like to encourage SA supporters to come out in their numbers, like FIFA President has said, like it or not the future of football is women’s football. We need our fans backing us like the Zambians did in the first leg,” concluded Motau.

North West-After many negotiations and rigorous technical assessment processes, the partnership between the German Development Bank and the Department of Social Development is finally yielding much anticipated results, North West MEC for Social Development Collen Maine said on Wednesday.

 

“The preliminary allocations indicate that the North West Province will receive an amount of R35.1 million in the next financial year for the establishment of new community care centres in four district municipalities,” Maine said.

 

He added that the purpose of the centres is to provide multi-sectoral services to orphans and vulnerable children, youth, the needy and will also be used for skills development of the beneficiaries.

 

Maine said the province was considered for this allocation, due to its recognizable efforts in providing services to this category of service users, its contribution broadly on the national orphans and vulnerable children agenda.

 

Maine said the province has become the third province after Kwa Zulu Natal and Limpopo to benefit from the German Development Bank funding initiative.

 

Meanwhile German Development Bank Director for Africa Regional Programmes, Dr Thomas Duve will tomorrow visit one of the assessed community care centres in Lethabong in Rustenburg Local Municipality. 

 

During his visit, Duve will meet with Lethabong organisation and other stakeholders the local municipality and the traditional authority.

Jan Kempdorp- Police are investigating a case of dealing in drugs after two men were arrested with Khat in Jan Du Toit Street, Jan Kempdorp on Wednesday. 

 

The Jan Kempdorp Detective Service with the assistance of Crime Intelligence followed up on information at about 08:00 regarding drug dealing at the specific premises. 

 

“The police pounced on the alleged sleeping dealers. The house was searched and 42 pokes of Khat, 2 blocks of Khat ice and a packet of Khat crystals were found hidden in the ceiling and in one of the bedrooms” lieutenant Sergio Kock said. 

 

The estimated at street value of the drugs is R10 000. 

 

Two men aged 30 and 32 respectively were arrested and will appear in Jan Kempdorp Magistrates’ Court on Thursday. 

 

“The Hartswater Cluster Commander, Colonel Tumelo Lekhu lauded the Jan Kempdorp Detectives and the Crime Intelligence Unit for their job well done. The community is also thanked for their assistance with information to the police” Koco said. 

 

“He added that drugs will not be tolerated in the Hartswater cluster and that police members will continue to clamp down on drug dealers.” Concludes Kock.-TDN

Klerksdorp-The Financial Information released to the public and Councillors of Matlosana over recent months by our Mayor and Municipal Manager has been incorrect.

 

“I learned reliably yesterday that the Municipality owes R123 million to Eskom and R40 million to Midvaal Water since end of October. Far from being under control as we were assured repeatedly by the Mayor, the situation is desperate as our expenditure each month exceeds our incoming revenue” DA Tiaan Kotze said.

 

DA said the mismanagement of their financial affairs cannot and will not be allowed to continue and for this reason a special meeting of Council will be held at the insistence of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) this Friday,  at which meeting their recommendation is that the Council finally accepts that it is legally under Financial  Administration, that the existing bunglers be stripped of their powers, and that Province be requested to immediately put the three administrators in place to correct the mess that we are in.

 

Even the ANC Councillors now realise that they have been misled by the incorrect information fed to them by the Mayor, the Municipal Manager and the CFO, and will hopefully accept the recommendations made by MPAC, and resolve accordingly, says Kotze.

 

The DA realised the desperate situation months ago and has said so repeatedly in Council, but the ANC councillors allegedly toed the party line instead of the communities’ best interest.-TDN

Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund has hailed his players’ attitude in their famous win over World and European champions as a sign of good things to come.

According to Igesund, it was a great overall performance for South Africa.

 

 

 

“We have been on track for a while, and I think tonight’s performance was a culmination of the hard work we have put into our efforts. The players did well and stuck to the game plan. But we should not get carried away and keep our feet on the ground because there is still a lot of work to be done, and we should continue working as hard as we have been doing,” said Igesund.

 

 

 

“Our vision remains the 2015 and 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers as well as the 2018 World Cup in Russia. I believe my players were tactically very good and fought very hard. I still believe we could have finished the game off earlier had we taken all our chances.”

The match was delayed for a few minutes as there was drama on the sidelines after Spain wanted to introduce their seventh substitute following the injury to goalkeeper Victor Valdez who had come on in the second half for captain Iker Casillas. The move was a violation of the rules that only six substitutes should be used in an international friendly match.

 

 

 

“I was not fighting on the sidelines, I was just informing them that they had already made six substitutes as per the rules of the game and also from our agreement in the meeting a day before the match. I also added that if they want to make another change it is up to the match officials – but I think the rules are rules and they shouldn’t be changed even if it is a friendly match. I was not refusing them to put on another player, and was quite happy for them to get on another player in terms of fair play. I think it was a misunderstanding due to a language barrier,” concluded Igesund.

North West Premier Thandi Modise is saddened by the untimely death of former Head of Protocol in the Office of the Premier Penyane Jacob Gause who died in hospital after a short period of illness over the past weekend. Gause who was on retirement is to be buried in Mahikeng on Saturday.

 

“We wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, relatives and public servants across all spheres of government who had worked with PJ throughout his illustrious working career in the public service. 

 

PJ as he was affectionately known had served me and all three predecessors, Popo Molefe, Edna Molema and Maureen Modiselle with loyalty, diligence and dedication. 

 

Mr. Protocol was an embodiment of Batho Pele and understood what it meant to be a servant of the people,” said Premier Modise.

 

The Premier said that Gause will always be remembered for his humbleness and the contribution that he has made towards establishing and maintaining an effective intergovernmental relations and stakeholder management.

 

Gause had recently served on the Confederation Cup, Inauguration of the President of South Africa,2010 FIFA World Cup and Confederation of African Football Cup Protocol teams.

  

His memorial service is to be held on Thursday afternoon at the Unibo Chapel at 14:00.

 

He is to be buried in Mahikeng after a funeral service to be held on Saturday at Barolong Boo Ratshidi Community Hall as from 7:00 am.-TDN

Taung-Incident of gender based violence call on communities to unite to reclaim their streets and neighbourhoods from criminals and start naming and shaming perpetrators, North West Premier Thandi Modise said in condemning an incident in which an uncle was slain while trying to stop a man from raping his niece.

 

“We call for united action to stop gender based violence and for the arrested 21-year old suspect not to be granted bail. Our communities have had enough of these incidents. Only harsher sentences will serve as a deterrent,” emphasised Premier Modise.

 

 

According to police, a 17 year old girl who stayed with her uncle in Cokonyane village near Taung was allegedly awoken by someone touching her while she was asleep.

 

 

Her uncle who reportedly responded to her scream for help found a man in his niece’s room who stabbed him several times until he fell unconsciously.

“The suspect grabbed the niece, tried to force her to follow him and stabbed her twice on her shoulder before allegedly raping her while she was still bleeding from her knife wounds,” said Sergeant Kelebogile Moiloa of the North West Police.

 

Moiloa says that the uncle died at the crime scene.

Meanwhile, the North West Province is gearing up to host the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign which will be launched by President Jacob Zuma at the Mmabatho Stadium on Sunday November 25.

 

 

The event is part of an international campaign, which takes place every year from 25 November, a day which has been declared an International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

 

 

 

Premier Modise urged communities to attend the event in order to show support for the campaign to be held under the theme “Vikela Mzansi-Kwanele! Communities united in preventing violence against women and Children.” 

 

“We call on all our people join us in the effort to stamp out abuse of women and children. We all have a duty as citizens of this country to make effort to eradicate any form of gender-based violence. Our province is troubled by scourge of rape, domestic violence and child-abuse and this 16 days campaign provide us with an opportunity to channel our energy in condemning these social ills and making South Africa a better place that we all aspire,” said Modise.

 

 

 

The campaign which focuses primarily on generating an increased awareness of the negative impact of violence on women and children ends on December 10, which is International Human Rights Day.-TDN

Bafana Bafana captain Itumeleng Khune, who won man of the match in his team’s 1-0 win over Spain in an International friendly at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday night, praised his coach Gordon Igesund’s tactics on the night.

 

Khune said that they had done a lot of planning for this game, and he was pleased that he could repay Igesund’s faith in them with a win.
