Krejcir hearing to be held in camera

Radovan-Krejcir
Johannesburg – The appearance of Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir and another man will be in camera, the senior prosecutor said on Monday morning.

The men were due to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court in Alberton on Monday to face charges of attempted murder and kidnapping. Krejcir arrived at the court shortly after 10:00.

Security reasons

Senior prosecutor Kenny Ramavhoya said the decision was taken for security reasons.

“It happens most of the time when there are security concerns,” he said.

He denied there was secrecy surrounding the matter and said only the men’s first appearance was expected to be behind closed doors.

It was not immediately clear which part of the Criminal Procedure Act was invoked to hear the matter in camera.

In agreement with the defence, the matter was expected to be postponed to 2 December for a bail application, he said.

The charges of kidnapping and attempted murder related to an alleged incident in June.

Hospital

Later on Monday, in the South Gauteng High Court, a ruling was expected on whether Krejcir should be moved from detention to hospital following an urgent application by his lawyers which started on Sunday night and ran into the early hours of Monday morning.

Earlier on Monday Krejcir’s lawyer Ulrich Roux told SAfm that his client did not refuse to be examined by a state doctor but did not consent to have his blood drawn after his arrest on Friday.

“He did not feel safe. He was not convinced that the state doctor was in fact a medical practitioner and he did not want his blood to be drawn by that person. His blood had already been drawn by two independent doctors,” said Roux.

He said Krejcir was examined by two doctors on Saturday.

These doctors drew blood from Krejcir and, based on the blood test results, advised that he should be immediately admitted to hospital.

Roux said the state doctor’s examination was “highly inadequate”.

“He did not refuse to be examined. He was examined yesterday morning [Sunday] at twelve o’clock, and after we launched the urgent application to have him placed in a medical facility that same doctor attended to the holding cells where our client is being detained and then attempted to draw blood which our client duly refused.”

Roux told SAfm that his basic constitutional right to legal representation and medical care had been infringed.

On Sunday it was reported that Krejcir had also laid charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and attempted murder against the SA Police Service.

His lawyers claimed that Krejcir was assaulted and tasered following his arrest on Friday.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate said on Monday it would investigate these allegations.

Premier Modise condemns alleged rape of 4 year old boy

thandi-modise
Lichtenburg-North West Premier Thandi Modise has condemned in the strongest terms possible the alleged rape a 4-year old boy by a repeat juvenile offender who has a pending case for raping a 72 year old granny and called on communities on members of the community to join hands in actively exposing perpetrators of sexual violence against women and children.

“The scourge of Rape has crossed the gender line because even young boys are being raped. We cannot afford to have our communities living in fear and need to unite in action to name and shame perpetrators. Enough is enough,” said Premier Modise reiterating the message of the 16 Days of Activism on no violence against women, children and people with disabilities launched yesterday in Mahikeng.

The four year old boy was reportedly playing with his friends in Itsoseng near Lichtenburg when a man grabbed him and raped him repeatedly in full view of his friends. It is alleged that he then dragged the four year old into a dilapidated community hall where he continued to rape him.

The terrified boys ran to their mothers to alert them about the incident. It is alleged that when the mother, accompanied by angry residents arrived at the scene, they found the suspect with his pants down raping the boy.

The community then started beating the suspect before taking him to Itsoseng Police Station.

“We commend the community for playing their part and taking the suspect to the police station instead of taking the law into their own hands. By apprehending the suspect and handing him over to authorities, the communities epitomised the 16 days campaign message – Don’t look away. We also call on property owners to either refurbish or demolish dilapidated buildings as it is clear that these places provide ideal nests for criminals,” reiterated Modise.

Modise said her administration is committed to making our communities safe for all, adding that it is important that families and communities play their role in protecting children from harm as part of the campaign to end violence against women and children.-TDN

Campaign on no violence against women and children should reach rural communities-Minister Xingwana

Image

Mahikeng-A concerted effort is required to promote the reach of the 16 days of activism on no violence against women and children campaign to rural areas, Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Lulu Xingwana said in launching the 16 Days of activism on no violence against women, children and people with disabilities in  partnership with  North West Premier Thandi Modise in Mahikeng on Sunday.

Minister Xingwana said that while the country has made significant progress in putting in place legislation, policies and other measures for advancing equality and empowerment of women, children and people with disabilities, those most severely affected by violence in rural communities may not be aware of the resources and services available to them to help them cope with their circumstances.

Xingwana said that this year’s campaign launched under the theme “Vikela Mzansi – Kwanele! Communities united in preventing violence against women and children, also seeks to address issues that affect vulnerable groups including women, girls and boys, Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans-Sexual and Intra-Sexual communities and people with disabilities.

“We believe that the unacceptably high levels of gender-based violence require the collective efforts of all South Africans. The violence takes different forms such as sexual harassment, abuse, brutal assaults, rape and brutal murders,” the Minister in expressing support for the North West Province’s one million anti-rape signature campaign.

Premier Thandi Modise told the over ten thousand people who attended the launch ceremony that the province will be intensifying the provincial initiative because violence against women is a serious human rights issue with significant social and economic implications for fighting poverty.

“As we approach the third decade of democratic governance, we should reassure all South African women and children that we will spare no effort in realising their dreams as well as the steadfastness of the women movement to build a better life for all which is envisaged in the constitution,” said Premier Modise.

The Premier said that the province is mobilising women organizations in other provinces to support for its proposed chemical castration for repeat rapists in order to petition the national government for a policy change.

“We know that we are being told of the human rights of the perpetrators. We are more concerned about the non-lives of the victims of rape. We are more concerned about the taking away of the souls of the victims of rape. We are more concerned about women who take their lives after being rape. We see no reason why the human rights of a rapist must be above the human right of a victim, “emphasised Modise.

Speaking on behalf of UN Women Dr Sadiq Syed thanked the South African Government for its continued support to the UN Women and for its effort in ending violence against women and girls.

“The lives of millions of women and girls have improved due to the continual contribution and the efforts of the government of South Africa. However, much needs to be done to protect and realise fully the rights of women,” said Syed.

One of the rape survivors, who has written a book about her harrowing experience, encouraged rape survivors to report and speak about their ordeal as a way to deal with their traumatic experience.

“Rape invades your emotion and physical being, but the emotional and mental state are by far the most difficult to heal. It has crossed the gender line because even boys are being raped,” said Kentse Badirwang.

Badirwang, whose book, “Kattie’s Arrow: Cruel Journey to her purpose” is in press, said there must be continues dialogue and action every day, not only when a horrific incident has happened or on strategic dates.

Earlier in the day Minister Xingwana accompanied by Premier Modise, the Provincial Chairperson of the Progressive Women’s Movement and Member of Parliament , Jane Manganye visited a 33 year-old Majemantsho mother of four who was gang raped by seven men that have not yet been arrested as police were allegedly unresponsive to her distress call.

The government representatives undertook to get to the bottom of the matter to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book and that justice prevails.

Messages of support were also delivered by the Chairperson of the Provincial House of Traditional Leadership, Professor Kgosi Madoda Zibi, representatives of Progressive Women’s Movement, Disabled People South Africa, Disabled People South Africa, Commission on Gender Equality, People Opposing Women Abuse, Sonke Gender Justice, the National Council Against Gender Based Violence and the Provincial Chapter of the National Interfaith Council of South Africa.-TDN

Zambia stun Bantwana

Image

Bantwana…(1) 1Zambia…….(1) 3(Zambia win 6-4 on aggregate and qualify for the World Cup in Costa Rica)Zambia shattered Bantwana’s high hopes of qualifying for the World Cup in Costa Rica next year with a stunning 3-1 win over their opponents at Bidvest Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The shock victory for the visitors, completed a 6-4 aggregate win for the Zambians who looked in control for most of the proceedings.

Sheryl Botes’ girls looked short of ideas and were bullied off the ball in 50-50 situations.

The visitors were off the blocks early but the home side failed to heed the warning signs.

Zambia duly took the lead midway through the first half when Bantwana defence failed to clear their lines allowing a Zambian striker to nod the ball home.

With everyone expecting an immediate positive response from the home side, it was Zambia who continued to dominate.

The home team however, got the lifeline on the 43rd minute when they were awarded a penalty which was dispatched home by Gabriela Salgado. The goal gave the homes supporters some whiff of hope but that was soon dashed when Zambia’s Janny Mubanga made it 2-1 early in the second half – again Juliet Sithole in goals for Bantwana guilty of some indecisiveness.

The goal seem to take the fighting off Bantwana and looked out of sorts for the rest of the game despite Zambia having been reduced to 10 when Given Mukanda was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Instead of pouring upfront searching for the equaliser, Bantwana were always outnumbered in the box.

Zambia finally put the matter beyond doubt when Chamelle Wiltshire was adjudged to have handled in the box. The Angolan official gave Wiltshire, who was looking porous at the back, a second yellow card meaning both teams finished the game with 10 players each.

From the resultant penalty, Zambia made it 3-1 to silence the home side.

‘We played badly especially at the back and we conceded, again some very soft goals,” said a despondent Bantwana coach Botes.-TDN
