Medical Male Circumcision Clinics Opened In Rustenburg

Image

Rustenburg-As a build-up towards World AIDS Day commemoration on 01 December, the North West Department of Health will officially open a high volume Medical Male Circumcision (MMC) clinic at the Bafokeng Community Health Center, Phokeng (near Rustenburg) on Thursday.

The proceedings are scheduled to start at 09h00.

The opening of MMC clinic in Phokeng comes after three clinical trials found that circumcised men were considerably less likely to contract HIV from their female partners. The MMC site, which will be run in conjunction with the Center for HIV and AIDS Prevention Studies (CHAPS), is capable of doing over 200 circumcisions per week.

This site is one of three high volume sites currently operating in the North West Province. Medical male circumcision is also available free of charge at all hospitals, community health centers and various clinics across the province.  Circumcision reduces the risk of contracting HIV by up to 60%. Using condoms reduces this risk even further.

This World AIDS Day, a revitalized HIV Counseling and Testing aimed at encouraging people to get tested will be unveiled by North West Premier, Thandi Modise.

Testing is routine and free at every government health facility.

The province will commemorate World AIDS Day in Moshana village, a farming community outside Zeerust.

STATISTICS ABOUT MALE CIRCUMCISION

1.Three clinical trails done in Uganda, Kenya and Orange Farm in South Africa showed consistent results that male circumcision reduces the risk for a circumcised heterosexual man.

2.Risk of HIV is reduced by 60% if a man in South Africa is circumcised.

3.In North West Province 18.9% of the entire population is estimated to be HIV-infected and 30.2% of pregnant women are HIV-infected.

4.Men get infected with HIV at an older age than women.

5.The age of first sexual activity in South Africa is 16 years, which highlights the importance of early circumcision.

6.South African Government plans to circumcise over 4m men by 2016.

7.14000 young men need to be circumcised in the North West Province over the next two years at all their sites.

8.Circumcision is a very safe procedure. Only 1-2% of all circumcisions have a problem – in most instances it is minor and resolved within a few days.

9.Men who are circumcised can go back to school or work the next day.

10.It takes about two hours at the clinic to be circumcised – this includes HIV testing, counceling about circumcision and the procedure itself. The actual circumcision takes about 15 minutes.-TDN

Hawks: Krejcir’s loan cop hasn’t quit

Image

Johannesburg – The Hawks have denied that a Germiston policeman who took a loan from a company associated with Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir had resigned.

Head of the Germiston organised crime unit Colonel Francois Steyn, who reportedly took a R408 000 loan from a company associated by the Czech businessman, was on annual leave, said Captain Paul Ramaloko on Tuesday.

“Steyn never offered to resign,” Ramaloko said.

Internal investigation

Beeld newspaper reported on Tuesday that Steyn had resigned but that national police commissioner Riah Phiyega refused to accept his resignation pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

“He is also not suspended. We can’t suspend a member based on media reports.”

Ramaloko said that Steyn was on annual leave.

“We have a team looking into the allegations [against Steyn].”

On Friday the Mail & Guardian reported that Steyn had taken a loan of R408 000 from a company Groep Twee Beleggings, but did not realise that the company was linked to Krejcir until five months later.

“I never took possession of the money. I never saw the money,” Steyn was quoted as saying.

The company was reportedly registered to Krejcir’s wife Katerina Krejcirova.

Steyn said the loan was organised by security consultant Cyril Beeka, who was shot dead in March 2011, so that Steyn could be a part of a start-up security company.

According to Steyn, Beeka agreed to service the loan until the company was up and running.

After Beeka’s death, Steyn received a summons for the R400 000 loan. A businessman friend of Steyn’s said he was owed nearly this much by Krejcir and a deal was struck for these debts to cancel each other out.

Court

On Monday, the South Gauteng High Court granted an urgent application for Krejcir to be moved from jail to a medical facility.

Krejcir was arrested on Friday in connection with an alleged kidnapping and assault that happened in June. Krejcir’s lawyers claim he was assaulted and tasered following his arrest.

Also on Monday, Krejcir and Desai Lupondo appeared briefly in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court but proceedings were held in camera due to security concerns.

Harrison protective over Ntuli

32f0be859a4b045cd6de57d6e8b75181
Golden Arrows coach Mark Harrison says he would be reluctant to release Bongi Ntuli for the 2014 African Nations Championship (Chan) should the striker receive a national call-up.

Ntuli has caught the eye by netting four goals in all competitions this season, most recently scoring the winner in the KwaZulu-Natal derby defeat of Maritzburg United on Sunday.

“I think he’s (Ntuli) got a big future and might end up playing for Bafana,” Harrison tells KickOff.com.

“I want to make sure that we keep him for as long as we can.

“I’m being selfish but I wouldn’t want him to go to the Chan. I need him to rest in January and prepared for the second half of the season.”

Baxter laments set-piece struggles

97279ec7030e27e4d6df218a2dd1a5bf
Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter is concerned that his men are posing less of a threat from set-pieces of late.

The Premiership champions have struggled to impose themselves this campaign, most recently bowing out of the Telkom Knockout semi-finals at the hands of Platinum Stars at the weekend.

Nevertheless, Amakhosi only trail League leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by five points, and Baxter maintains his team just need to make better use of their chances.

Numsa president resigns

GetImage
JOHANNESBURG – National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) President Cedric Gina has tendered his resignation.

He says his resignation is now with the structures and members of the union to decide what to do next.

“I wrote a letter to all the structures of Numsa indicating that I am tendering my resignation because I disagree with the direction that my union is taking.”

Gina appears to be at loggerheads with the Numsa General Secretary Irvin Jim, who appeared to lead the union’s move to possibly leave the ANC-led tripartite alliance.

Earlier on Monday, Gina told Eyewitness News that if Numsa left the alliance and Cosatu, he would reconsider his position there.

He also said the move was not properly discussed with members.
