SuperSport United have secured the services of talented goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams, for an extra three years after he signed a contract extension until 2017.

The 21-year-old is widely regarded as one of the most talented goalkeepers to come out of South Africa in recent years, and has long since been a target for some of the PSL’s other clubs.

However, Matsatsantsa have previously voiced their stance on Williams’ future, with their only intentions of selling him being if a good offer came in from a club overseas.

FIFA has responded to Sports and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula’s outburst following the announcement that the world football governing body will take over the investigation into match fixing involving Bafana Bafana friendlies.

Responding to Sports and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula outburst about their decision to take over the investigation of match fixing involving Bafana Bafana friendly matches in the build-up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, FIFA said some urgency was needed to resolve this issue.

“Michael J. Garcia, the chairman of the investigative chamber of FIFA’s independent Ethics Committee, has decided to open a preliminary investigation on the alleged cases of match-manipulation in South Africa in view of the time elapsed and the fact that no independent Commission of Enquiry has yet been set up in South Africa as was agreed in the meeting with South Africa’s Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula on 5 April 2013,” said a statement sent by FIFA to the Siya crew .

“In accordance with FIFA’s Code of Ethics, the independent Ethics Committee can investigate cases if associations fail to prosecute potential breaches of that code,” added the statement.

Bloemfontein Celtic winger Lyle Lakay is set for a trial at Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Phunya Sele Sele CEO, Khumbulani Konco, is quoted on the club’s website saying, “I can confirm that Lyle Lakay will be going to Sundowns for an assessment with the intention of moving there in January should all parties be happy.”

The SA national Under-17 Women’s team Bantwana will be out to secure another World Cup appearance when they take on Zambia in the final qualifiers for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup next year.

Since their formation in 2009, the South African U17 Women’s National team made their first World Cup appearance in 2010 and they will be hoping to build on that success.

The 2014 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup will be staged in Costa Rica from 15 March to 5 April 2014.

Bantwana secured a 3-3 draw in the first leg played in Zambia and they will be looking to do home fans proud in the return-leg qualifier on Sunday, 24 November.

Bantwana’s success can be attributed to the High Performance Centre in Pretoria, which has produced several players who went on to represent the country at the 2010 edition of the World Cup.

One such player is Robyn Moodaly, who featured in the U17 squad that travelled to Trinidad and Tobago for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in 2010. The speedy midfielder has had a string of success since her appearance in the World Cup. That led to her selection to the Banyana Banyana squad for the London Olympics last year.

Moodaly is now based in the US where she is studying Sports Science at the AIB College and plays in the American College League.

Meanwhile, Bantwana right-winger and captain, Amogelang Motau believes the encounter is crucial and that they have to give it their all to secure qualification.

“We are excited about the upcoming game. We want this as much as the Zambians do so we’re going to play with all we’ve got. We know it is going to be tough, but we hope the home support will carry us through our final encounter. We also want to make history with another World Cup qualification,” said Motau.

Ten teams have already booked their places in the 2014 edition. The qualified teams are China PR, Korea DPR, Japan, Nigeria, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Colombia, Paraguay, Venezuela and Costa Rica qualify automatically as the host nation.

Six slots are still up for grabs with two of those coming from the CAF region.

Bafana Bafana will be out to protect their unbeaten record when they face Swaziland in an international friendly match scheduled for the Somhlolo Stadium in the capital Mbabane.

The clash will take place on Friday, 15 November 2013 and kickoff is at 20h30.

This will be the fourth meeting between the two nations – the previsous three have been in the COSAFA CUP.

South Africa and Swaziland first met 13 years ago (18 June 2000) in Witbank with Bafana Bafana emerging victorious 2-0.

The second clash took place two years later (24 August 2002) in Polokwane, South Africa winning 4-1.

The last encounter was played seven years ago (20 May 2006). Benson Mhlongo scored the solitary goal in a match held in Botswana.

Siphiwe Tshabalala is only remaining member of that squad – having come on in the 78th minute for Dillon Sheppard.

“That we have played them three times and won does not automatically make us winners again. We are expectign a tough match, more so because it is an away game. We have to be very cautious not to underestimate them but strive to do our best to win the match,” said Tshabalala.

Bafana Bafana will be playing on an artificial turf at Somhlolo Stadium.

Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund is using the match to prepare for the CHAN tournament that will be hosted in South Africa from 11 January – 1 February 2014.

“We should have a good game and I don’t think the ranking will be an issue because international footobal has changed a lot. This is a going to be a good exercise for us as we prepare for CHAN. I am trying to give as a many players a chance as possible because I have a big pool of players lining up to play in the CHAN tournament and I have to select 23 that will represent South Africa,” said Igesund.

”So I am going to field a strong squad because I don’t want to disrecpect anybody but just want to win the match and get my preparations for CHAN going. We would like to score as many goals as possible. The players that are here are fighting for their places which will make this match even more exciting.”

Defender Thabo Nthete is also confident about a positive outcome.

“We are going to approach this game like any other game, wanting to win. We know we are playing away so they are not going to make it easy for us more so with all the support behind them in the stands. and its going to be tough with all your supporters behind you. But I do believe we have the quality to get a positive result against Swaziland,” said Nthete.

Bafana Bafana will have their last training at the match venue this evening.

The North West provincial task team (PTT) of the ANC Youth League yesterday said it was against the possible election of Gordon Kegakilwe as the provincial secretary of the ANC.

Kegakilwe is the acting provincial secretary of the governing party. Last month, he revealed his readiness to assume the position on a full-time basis if nominated and elected by the branches at the upcoming provincial general council (PGC).

PTT spokesperson Oabile Seabelo told The New Age that the interim leadership identified several flaws in the ANC under Kegakilwe’s leadership. He said these included problems faced by the party while holding the provincial list conference on October 31 in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria.

Minister in the Presidency, Trevor Manuel, has urged senior managers to commit to service delivery. He was speaking at a Gauteng senior management service conference in Birchwood, Boksburg, east of Johannesburg.

Manuel says in all the years he’s been the minister he’s tried to meet with senior management at least once a fortnight. He says this relationship will enhance service delivery on the ground and ensure prompt response to challenges.

Scores of University of Johannesburg (UJ) cleaners protested outside the Auckland Park Kingsway Campus over their grievances with the university management on Thursday.

At least 100 workers from the Elite Cleaning Services company which has a fixed-term contract with UJ handed a memorandum of grievances. The workers are demanding for a better living wage and better working conditions.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating yet another case of police brutality in Umlazi, south of Durban. A policeman allegedly beat a grandmother to the ground while his colleagues looked on.

The policemen thought the woman was the mother of a suspect they were searching for. It has since emerged that it was a case of mistaken identity. Siphiwe Mthembu says she was in her yard, when three policemen entered guns drawn. Without a word, one of them allegedly set on her slapping and punching her repeatedly.
