Maqubela guilty of husband’s murder

Image

Cape Town – Thandi Maqubela is guilty of murdering her husband Patrick Maqubela, Judge John Murphy said in the Western Cape High Court on Thursday.

According to Sapa her co-accused Vela Mabena was acquitted on the basis that the State had not proved his involvement beyond reasonable doubt.

Murphy said Maqubela was “the perpetrator of her husband’s death”.

Murphy concluded his 220-page judgment which he started reading on 4 November.

He said call records showed there was a fair amount of contact between Maqubela and Mabena after the acting judge’s death in his apartment on 5 June 2009.

He said these calls and text messages were suspicious for two people who claimed to hardly know each other and whose contact was said to be for the sole purpose of a book.

A boy dies after swallowing firework

Image

Johannesburg – A 6-year-old boy died in Durban after swallowing a firework during the Diwali festival, The Star reported on Thursday.

Tyreece Jordan Naicker swallowed the firework on Sunday morning but only told his mother later that day.

She made him regurgitate and found a piece of the firework. He was rushed to hospital where he later died, the newspaper reported.

The boy’s uncle, Ronnie Naicker, said he was not certain what the firework was called and how much he had swallowed.

The tip of the firework has to be rubbed on the floor to ignite, in a similar way to striking a match. The firework lets off a fountain of sparks.

Naicker told the newspaper that the boy, who attended primary school, was his normal self the entire Sunday evening but took a bad turn on Monday.

Khutsong under watchful eye of police

Image

Johannesburg – Police are still monitoring the situation in Khutsong near Carletonville in Gauteng following the murders of six people in mob violence at the weekend, a spokesperson said on Thursday.

“The situation is quiet in Khutsong, the police are still there monitoring,” Brigadier Neville Malila said.

The six were killed after about 400 men, believed to be Khutsong residents, held a meeting to discuss gangsterism on Sunday.

The men separated into different groups.

One group attacked a 61-year-old traditional healer and set him and his house alight. The man died on the scene.

Other groups from the meeting targeted two young men, allegedly members of a gang, who were assaulted and set alight. They also died at the scene.

Two other alleged gang members were stoned. One died on the scene and the other died in hospital.

The body of a sixth man was found on Sunday night. He had been set alight.

Malila said no arrests have been made and two bodies had not yet been identified.
